his team (VTG Alpha) manages servers in several sites (RTP, Galway, San Jose) and it's possible that there may have been a voicemail outage and he was just doing a quick test after checking his voicemail that AM. i work in VTG and the Alpha group does maintenance all the time.

And technically, it's Alpha, not Beta, -testing

The other day they about lost their minds because Brad wanted "military grade" software for cleaning his hard drive. They didn't know that it only means wiping the drive 3x instead of 1x, and it is freely available online.

Alpha testing is done on software builds that are not quite ready for final release. There's a chance there are bugs in the release so alpha testers are the first-line for flushing them out in a production environment (QA does testing in a lab environment).

beta testing is usually with a more mature product and with 3rd party (people not affiliated with the development organization)
