The new one has already been jailbroken, BTW. Who knows how long it will take for a public release, but that's a good sign that Apple didn't put in anything too crazy as far as jailbreak security goes. 3/16/2012 4:15:23 PM |

And now a different guy has jailbroken his using a different method. Looks like it shouldn't be too long afterall.
On another note, I just got this email from Apple:
Quote : | "Dear Matt XXX,
Your Apple ID, xxx@gmail.com, was just used to purchase Real Racing 2 HD from the App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID.
If you made this purchase, you can disregard this email. It was only sent to alert you in case you did not make the purchase yourself.
If you did not make this purchase, we recommend that you go to iforgot.apple.com to change your password, then see Apple ID: Tips for protecting the security of your account for further assistance.

That's nice of them. I wonder how many emails like that they've had to send out today. 3/16/2012 6:04:40 PM |

Android has had pretty solid speech-to-text since 2.1 or 2.2 actually.
Apple is most likely using the Nuance engine though, which is the best in the industry for speech to text.

^^I was just going by this chart and a youtube video I saw that was showing off some of the new features of ICS that spent a good amount of time going over the new dictation software.
Either way, it's a joke to say that Apple has "caught up" to Android, by looking at one feature in a vacuum. I guess the Fandroids have to try to cling to something though, no matter how tiny it might be.

The reality is though that Android does have some features iOS doesn't have, and vice versa.
Whilst iOS is wildly popular, there are still plenty of legitimate reasons someone might want an Android phone over an iOS phone.

Anyone care to share LTE speed tests you've done while in the triangle area? I'm seeing 30-40 Mbps on Verizon LTE in Raleigh and Cary. I expect that AT&T users should see even faster speeds since the network is so new here. 3/18/2012 11:03:06 AM |

Anyone use Splashtop? Works surprisingly well on the iPad. Not updated for new display yet so it's a little bit fuzzy at 1024 by 768 but video and game streaming work well.
Logmein Ignition works great as well. Don't like the blue bar at the bottom though but for streaming HD video it works like a charm. 3/19/2012 9:03:50 AM |

I can't remember if it's been posted in this thread or not but you can pop a AT&T sim card in the VZW 4G iPad and get on AT&T 3G. That would make a huge difference to me if I was shopping for the 4G versions. 3/19/2012 6:18:19 PM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
Another thing to keep in mind is while the LTE speeds are comparable on both Verizon and AT&T Verizon falls back to EVDO which is slow as balls when not in an LTE area.
AT&T on the other hand falls back to HSPA+ which is still pretty fast. So if you travel or aren't in a Verizon LTE area then go AT&T.
http://www.imore.com/2012/03/07/att-verizon-4g-ipad/
Simply because AT&T's 3G networks are a lot faster than Verizon's. Just depends where you live.

^^ Not true. EV-DO Rev. A is really brisk. It's not quite HSPA+ quick, but it's real quick.
AT&T's LTE network is so tiny it's practically a laugh. Get the Verizon model, no question. They throw in free wireless hotspot tethering, too.
(P.S. - I'm an AT&T customer) 3/19/2012 9:16:28 PM |
El Nachó special helper 16370 Posts user info edit post |
quick? It has a theoretical max of 3.1 Mbps with actual real world speeds averaging out around sub 2Mbps. Can that still be called quick these days? At least HSPA+ maxes out at 14.4 Mpbs with 10+ being a serious real world possibility. It's not LTE speeds, but it's at least in the same ballpark.
Quote : | " Get the Verizon model, no question." |
I do agree with this though. you get VZW LTE and you can fall back to AT&T HSPA+ if you travel somewhere that VZW doesn't cover. I really would hate to have to use VZW 3G as a fallback though. ]3/19/2012 9:28:14 PM |

Got a 64gb wifi model today. It's amazing how much the display reduces eye strain, I would never have thought it. It's one thing to have a retina display in an iPod but completely different in a larger screen.
It'll be nuts once laptops get this.
iCloud not only had all my email settings backed up, but even individual apps settings were retained (like for the jabber client I use).
Overall extremely pleased so far with the new iPad 3.
Another thing I noticed is that the speaker seems to be MUCH improved over the iPad 2. It's still mono but it sounds a lot better. 3/20/2012 12:13:36 AM |
