that being said, i think it was a perfect time for xbox to announce the 3 year warranty plan...for 2 reasons...
1) they needed to (atleast for boxes that die because of 3 red lights, not human's breaking them) 2) i see it in a way that they basically just countered the ps3 price drop (if its really true...$499 now) 7/5/2007 10:00:11 PM |

^^do you even know how to read? or for that matter do simple math?
They've sold 11.6M consoles They took a $1B charge That works out to about $90 bucks per console sold Thus the charge is about one new console for every 4 they've sold
The charge is for past repairs, but more importantly the cost of having to extend warranties to three years. Yes, it is fantastic that they are doing that. They needed to do it about a year ago. But nonetheless, whatever part of that charge isn't for what they've had to fix, it's expected to be used to fix future failures. Companies don't take a $1B charge just for shits and giggles. 7/5/2007 10:23:39 PM |

i am pretty sure from what i read on gamespot that ms is taking a 1b hit for retroactively rolling out this 3 year warranty, thus are putting themselves under the hammer for the potential of upwards to 1b in losses. basically 1b (minus whats already been spent in console repairs) of their funds is frozen and cannot be used otherwise for things like invests, or capital.

Quote : | "Xbox defects will cost Microsoft Eric A. Taub New York Times
LOS ANGELES --In what might be one of the costliest consumer warranty repairs in history, Microsoft announced Thursday that it would spend as much as $1.15 billion to fix failing Xbox 360 game machine consoles.
Though the company would not say how many units were failing, Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, said there have been an "unacceptable high number of repairs."
"We don't think we've been getting the job done," Bach said.
Company officials said Microsoft had sold 11.6 million Xbox 360 units as of the end of the last quarter, slightly shy of the 12 million units the company predicted. The XBox 360, which went of sale in November 2005, is the best-selling game machine in the U.S., according to NPD, a market research firm.
The size of the anticipated repair bill suggests that a third to as many as half of the machines are flawed. Microsoft said it would take a charge of $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion against earnings in the quarter that ended June 30. Consumers know they have a problem if three red flashing lights appear on the console. Gamers on online forums have taken to referring to the event as the "Red Ring of Death" because the machine then shuts down.
The company declined to explain the cause of the failure, but said it was not caused by a single problem in the machines. The company said that there are no health or safety issues involved.
The problem began to appear in the past three to four months, according to Bach, after "significant usage" of the consoles. Bach said the company has taken steps to correct the problem in newer devices.
Microsoft said that it will extend the warranty of the game console to three years, during which time it will pay for shipping and repairs for customers worldwide. Previously, products sold in the U.S. were covered by a one-year warranty, but Xbox 360 units sold in Europe received a two-year warranty.
In addition, any customers who have had their consoles repaired because of the "three flashing lights" problem will be reimbursed for the cost of repairs.
Microsoft has succeeded in establishing the Xbox brand against the better-known Sony PlayStation and other game machines. The Xbox and its successor, the XBox 360, was the software maker's first major foray into hardware.
Though sales are small relative to the rest of Microsoft's revenue, the XBox has been an important venture for the company and was viewed by many analysts as Microsoft's attempt to compete with the likes of Sony and Apple for control of electronics and entertainment within homes. The device can be used to get access to the Internet and to view movies.
Microsoft said its entertainment and devices division, which also makes the Zune digital music player, reported an operating loss of $315 million on $929 million in revenue for the three-month period that ended in March. Analysts have estimated that the company has lost about $6 billion getting a foothold in the game-machine industry.
A new XBox 360 with a 20-gigabyte hard drive sells for about $400; other versions are about $300.
Microsoft has written down larger amounts in the past -- more than $10 billion in the late 1990s related to investments in telecommunications companies, and more than $5 billion related to antitrust issues -- but a $1 billion write-down for one division in one quarter is significant.
"It suggests the problem is pretty widespread," said Matt Rosoff, an analyst at the independent research group Directions on Microsoft.

so what are the 7/7/7 specials that you can only download today
since mine red ringed yesterday, I won't be getting the free downloads
and also, I read today that halo 3 will not be making map packs free ever, so while halo 2 was purchased for a while and then free, if you ever want to continue to play halo 3 online, you will have to continually put more money in their pocket.
The game hasn't even been released yet and they already have maps set aside for map packs.
All in all you'll probably need to spend $100+ after they introduce new maps, and probably new multiplayer modes as well. I somehow doubt they will keep it at $5 seeing how for most things on marketplace these days run for $10. 7/7/2007 1:56:47 PM |

you dont need to keep paying, you can continue to play the other maps. as long as they dont gimp the original number of modes or maps, who cares. 7/7/2007 1:58:44 PM |

how fast do they ship games after they release date? 7/7/2007 6:02:26 PM |
RonRtesticle Suspended 155 Posts user info edit post |
theres 3 shipping options, 5 dollars, 6.50 and 8 dollars
I get the 5 dollar or 6.50 one and on your average tuesday release I usually get the games on Thursday or Friday, a few times on Saturday.
So basically the shipping equals the cost of tax you'd pay in store plus maybe a dollar, so you're saving 17-20 bucks to wait a few days
Madden and NCAA are like crack to me so I had to have those day 1, but the other games I'd rather wait a few days and save 20 dollars per.
Good part with some of the games is you can pay 10 down now to reserve the low price, then the balance before its due to ship. 7/7/2007 6:07:25 PM |
seedless All American 27142 Posts user info edit post |
so when he has low prices like this, do they last for a good while, or are only for like a week or something? 7/7/2007 6:12:49 PM |
RonRtesticle Suspended 155 Posts user info edit post |
they've been up for a few weeks and probably won't dip anytime soon so no rush if you're debating
I'd probably make my mind up a month before the games released because thats usually when the deals tend to reduce or expire
But he's changed the prices quickly before so no garauntees those prices last
