I was reading about the notion of the November Criminals over the weekend and it really reminded me of what you preach. Germans, citizens of what had always been a great military power, had no idea how to understand defeat. Instead of rationally realizing that they had been defeated, they chose to blame it on elements within their own government and population. Similarly, you can't come to grips with the fact that government is made of many imperfect systems. Instead of admitting that the US intelligence apparatus is flawed, you go to extraordinary lengths to explain how arabs couldn't have killed americans.
