Those storms rolled through Burlington right in the middle of my p90x workout and since I keep my windows and balcony door open the cooling effect from the rain felt soooooooo good and the lightning/thunder gave me an excitement to push even harder. Good times indeed!

I'm hearing several reports of trees down in North Raleigh. Airport reported a 66 mph gust. Lightning also started a house fire near the airport.

As long as you know what heat lightning really is, I'm ok with you using that term.

yep, im no meteorologist but im pretty sure its when there is no ground contact and no thunder.

its directly overhead of us right now and pretty crazy looking with the other side of the sky empty except for the full moon

Heat lightning is a misnomer.

It's lightning that's too far away for the sound of the thunder to reach you.

[Edited on July 25, 2010 at 9:45 PM. Reason : shouldn't say it doesn't exist...it ain't a real thang, i mean.]

With lightning, there's always thunder - ground contact or not. "Heat lightning" is just lightning from a storm too far away to hear the thunder.

If you're in Fuquay, it's from the storm South of you.

Yeah, that's what it is... there's a pretty decent looking storm that just moved through Harnett county. All of this recent heat this weekend can stir up some wicked storms, given the right conditions.

just heard that Apex got around 3.5 inches of rain between 11:30 and 12:30 today

and Robeson county, down around Lumberton got hit with around 5000 lightning strikes as the storm passed over. They had 64+ mph winds too, but the lightning strikes are awesome.

I love days like this, I'm glad I'm working from home and get to enjoy it a little, sorry about your bags tourney though
