I think the real issue is that the class isn't being taught by an agent that the university employed, it's taught by someone on the football staff.

Lists of numbers by college. The largest is Engineering followed by Ag and Life Sciences. Third is CHASS ~4K/24K+ Grad school numbers result in CHASS total enrollment being even less than that by %.

AHA, I just realized that maybe Chapel Hill would be better off if they offered a course like USC 103--two of the topics covered include NCAA eligibility and academic integrity.

I took the non-athlete versions of these classes my first and second semesters of my freshman year. They are one hour courses that introduce you to college and help you pick a major. The point is to get you to pick a major so you won't hang around too long and hurt the school's graduation rate. It also helps provide a supportive home base for you so you won't get overwhelmed as a freshman and drop out or give up.

The NCAA wants the University to offer these classes.

Yea, I was in FYC, and those classes were easy As, but also very helpful starting out, b/c I had no clue what I wanted to major in.

You did a bunch of major and career exploration, went to major fairs, and we did the MBTI as well. It's not useful for everyone (people that couldn't necessarily get into the more competitive majors, but did FYC to buy themselves a year to transfer in), but it had a purpose.

To sum up the record:

1. There are athlete and non-athlete versions of the class because the rules/requirements that the NCAA/ACC places on student-athletes for their college experience are different than (and more extensive than) the rules/requirements placed on regular students. The classes are obviously going to cover different things.
2. The primary reason the classes are graded is to get students to actually show up and try at the work, which is the same reason all classes are graded.
3. It is hard not to make an A.
4. They are 1-hr. courses so there is zero pressure on the instructor to assign a certain grade. The grade hardly affects a student's GPA.
5. It is not outrageous to have someone in the athletic department teaching the class because they are people who would understand current ACC/NCAA requirements.

And I honestly do think they should offer a course like this at Chapel Hill. The list of rules that student-athletes have to follow is pretty long/confusing/unclear, and there are all sorts of places a person can get tripped up.

^^We're talking specifically about the USC courses that students take to explore their options and learn about college. Those are easy 1-hour courses, and it is not surprising that As are abundant for everybody.

I got a C+ in AP Calc and an A+ in 141. It probably depended a lot on your teacher.

Wait, all lies, AP Calc placed people out of 141. A+ was 241 or whatever the next class was.

[Edited on August 23, 2012 at 4:48 PM. Reason : Why are people taking AP Calc and 141]

^ You had to make a certain score on the AP test to place out. You could place out of 241, too.

anyways, my point was that people who are in FYC take real classes. Why you always gotta be a dick?

Also, in case anyone asks why people are in FYC for two years... It can take a student about 2 years to finish general education requirements, and you are allowed to remain in FYC for that two years if you still haven't chosen a major. Some other schools are run this way as a matter of course--you do not declare a major until you have finished 2 years of general ed classes. State calls it first year college because, while it's okay to stay in there for more than a year, they really do want you to pick a major and get out.

And if you only take 24 hours a year or don't earn a certain GPA (for the major you want), you can remain an FYC student for even longer than 2 years. But these easy USC courses run out and only count as 1 credit each so it's not like anybody gets an advantage by staying in FYC.

You're wrong on this one Ernie. AP Calc A is essentially identical to MA 141.

241 is integration or AP Calc B.

^^ exactly. Most PE classes were not easy.

Weightlifting and running for a grade? Good luck.

Hell, even basketball. I wanna see you slap the ball off the backboard 60 times in a minute. Unless you're like 6'5 I'm convinced it can't be done. Plus you always have some stoner on your team who forgets the inbounds plays and that affects YOUR grade.

^ I did too but I'm a really fast walker. I only saw one person who could walk the 2 mile in 21 minutes and i signed up for the course 3 times (only completed it once).

weightlifting to get 100 on bench press was something like bench pressing twice your bodyweight.

99.9% of the population can't do that. Hell 99% of the Indian guys at State can't bench press the bar ten times. They don't eat protein, they have no chance.

Running 3 miles in 18 minutes? In college??? You've got to be a serious nerd to be able to do that. I'd throw up 5 mornings a week. Who the hell wants to run after that?

Just getting up before noon everyday took a lot of prodding. Running 30 miles a week would have taken nothing short of an executive order.

I can't think of a single person who was in better shape at age 20 then in high school.

In high school you've got nothing to do on weeknights so you play sports because it's fun and girls like guys who are on the team.

Girls don't care if you're winning local 5k's. Has anyone ever gotten laid by being good at exercising?

Never heard of girls attending powerlifting competitions. Your goal is to look good at the pool, no one cares what your actual bench press is after high school.

dude i was like 155 lbs at age 20.

Just because you're skinny doesn't mean you can run 3 miles in 18 minutes. You actually have to train to do that, no one just gets out of bed and runs that.

And I've seen plenty of guys gain 30+ lbs after 2 years in college, are you kidding?

Guys who were 150 lbs in high school because they played soccer or cross country or whatever come back in two years sporting a huge belly because they drink 15 beers and eat pizza/wings every night.

Yeah, I was in much better shape at 18 and 19 than I was after a couple of years of college. Of course, once I got my shit together and graduated I was in about the same shape as I was when I got to state. I would wager that most people in good shape stay that way for a year or 2, go downhill once they can start doing the bar scene, and then realize it's time to get back in shape once they graduate and get a job.

The best shape of my life was either when I was 18, or when I was 25.
