It does make sense though, if Ayers is as bad as people are saying, to question why he was hired by the U. of Illinois, which likely gets a good chunk of their $$$ from the fed. gov..
That means not only does Obama pall around with terrorist, but all of Ayer's colleagues there, as well as the people that hired him AND his wife.

That was McCain's downfall. The history books will show that picking Palin and his speeches "catering" the right-wing neo-cons caused himself to get cornered. You can't win an elections with just evangelist blowhards, the blue collar "6-pack Joe", warhawks, and your rich buddies in Big Oil.
McCain alienated himself for countless independents, libertarians, intellectuals, secular moderates, and even some of the conservative dixiecrats that would be prime candidates of voting across party lines. He lost my vote since this summer...

It's no secret why Obama is doing so much better in the battleground states. The bottom line is that he's trying harder. From a ground game perspective, his campaign is miles ahead of McCains. Go read any news story or blog comparing the efforts of the two campaigns to register new voters. It's not even close. We're talking at least 2:1 in almost every battleground state, newly registered democrats to republicans.10/7/2008 9:09:27 AM |

At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. uhhh.... you would assume wrong.
you're completely blind if you think that unemployed, living off welfare and medicare, rural whites living in the South are voting Democratic. The GOP has convinced those voters that the "values issues" of guns, gays, and abortion are more important for them than economic policy. These people have no concept of the difference between a "fiscal conservative" and a "tax-and-spend liberal." They don't know or care about economic policy. They see no conflict of living off of government spending, as long as that government represents their "christian values."10/7/2008 10:34:24 AM |

welfare is a broken, overgrown, inefficient, out of control system, not unlike most things that the government involves itself in, and could surely be trimmed back some, but it's sort of a whipping boy.
the real culprits are social security and medicare, and the interest that accumulates as a result of our spending money that we don't have to pay for them. business and agriculture subsidies also make the hall of shame list.

yes, that's my point. Kind of like the earmarks that McCain and Palin spend so much time talking about, which, like welfare, need to be pulled in and controlled somehow, but in the greater scheme of the whole budget or economy don't even make a dent.
A hugely disproportionate amount of time is spent talking and complaining about those two issues, when there are so many more important things that need discussion and changing.
Not to mention, the "not everybody can be on welfare" swipe and ones similar to it are nothing but weakly coded racism. They are meant to conjure images of inner city, black "welfare queens", and the rest of us red-blooded, hard workin' americans shouldn't have to support them. And while blacks certainly are overrepresented in the welfare roles, the majority of welfare recipients are still white suburban and rural people, which are also strongly Republican demographics.10/7/2008 10:44:17 AM |

agent, I think you have a point when it comes to single issues, like gay rights or gun rights. But what it boils down to is who is going to give them more money. imo
How do you feel about not letting those on welfare vote?
Agent, I think you trying to make this into a race issue is unwarranted. By far there are more whites on welfare than blacks. ALthough a higher percentage of blacks are on it. Its about giving away money to those who continue to make poor decisions, not about race.

I don't agree. I think it used to be like this. That's why from ~1900-~1970, the poor South was consistently blue and the well-off Northeast was Red. But the Religious Right has completely hijacked the Conservative party, and people often vote against their own economic self-interest now.
