Just FYI for anyone who finds that guy strangely familiar, he's Gareth from the the UK office. Just thought I'd save everyone the trip to IMDB.

how great that you have bumped this thread! it happens that i have been watching season 1 on dvd during my break from work and i'm also finishing up the second book. i've been making a lot of references to the world of grrm that my friends find weird and obscure. my boyfriend is just getting really annoyed.

Just started GoT last night with my husband-- we are OBSESSED.

We went up to episode 4.. I have a feeling we'll be caught up with the rest of you very soon.

Meg, I saw that you got the cookbook as your TWW Secret Santa gift.. how is it? Have you tried any of the recipes yet?

I would skip book 1, it is exactly like the TV show, actually, the TV show is better for book/season 1. Book 2 has a lot of stuff that gets cut off though, it's a must read.

I love the show but still totally think Book 1 is reading. It is one of my favorite all-time stand-alone books. It is still my favorite book in the series with Book 3 being a very close 2nd.

However, it is also hard to think about it from the perspective of someone who watched the show FIRST. Some of what made that book awesome won't resonate the same if you already know the main twists and turns. I do agree that Season 1 follows Book 1 pretty closely, but they still leave a few things out that I think are important in the book series later on. (Not sure whether the show will cover them at all or completely leave them out).

^^ I disagree, I think the thought processes and internal conversations Ned has with himself while he's imprisoned in the first book are vital to the entire series down the road. They create conversation pieces for him that uncover it a bit but to no where near the detail that the book has.

yeah book 1 is amazing, even after watching GoT season 1. If you are a fan of the show and want to have a deeper connection with the characters the books are a must.

It's just my opinion, but after reading book 1 I felt like I could have just as well watched season 1 over again. I felt like I knew the internal dialog he was having even in the TV show, so I didn't really miss anything there. The only things I think you don't get from the TV show on book 1 are the details on some of the intial winterfell residents and Ned Stark's guard, who I still had to go back and reread when they pop back up 3 books down the road.

There are a couple big things season 1 glossed over or didn't address at all. Who knows, maybe they are red herrings and that is why the show cut them but the whole tower of joy thing and jon snow's mother have been huge threads within the book that they really kind of have avoided in the show.

They are small parts of the book but it started one of the most interesting threads throughout this story for me.
