Joel, I think you're giving these writers too much credit.

They painted themselves into a corner and played the old "they're all dead anyway" card.

It's complete and utter hack-dom.

nah, I agree. I think it's kinda unfortunate that they did, in fact, kinda lose their thread 3 seasons ago, and this was the culmination. coulda been worse, though. I really don't know how it could've ended any other way.

basically, i get it, but there was sooooo much development into other things, and such little, it seems, leading up to this ending.

no, because of all of the possible theories, this is the farthest away from having any semblance of consistency with the events of the last 6 years, much less what Christian Shepard explained at the end.

the only purgatoryish part of this was the alternate timeline where they didn't crash. Ironically, the mythical island plotline was 'real' and the realistic plotline where people lived normalish lives was 'fake.'

jesus christ, yes it was. all of the flashbacks showed what kind of people the characters were before they arrived on the island, and the plot details always referred back to events that had occurred in their lives previously. everything was to see if these people could change or find redemption or if they'd continue to fuck up and perpetuate the same flaws on the island that they carried around with them their entire lives.

Has it occured to anyone that they didn't "explain" the mythology completely on purpose, in order to leave it open for interpretation? I like imagining who or what Jacob and MIB might represent.

I think that the Island "cycle" has been going on for tens of thousands of years. You'll notice the skeletons in the light's chamber. Apparently people have been fucking around with it off and on for a while. I would bet that Hurley and Ben ruled the island for a thousand years or so until accidentally setting off the smoke monster again (leading to their deaths) and starting the whole thing over.

Ernie, I get it dude. The problem is, it's bullshit. In this instance, it was as poorly executed as it could possibly have been.

Location as a plot device to direct focus to the characters is a long standing fictional method. The problem with this series is that the writers didn't develop the characters well at all.

I'll admit I haven't watched a full episode.

I think its funny all the people who say, "but, but its the only ending that made sense" of course it was because nothing was ever explained along the way due to tragically pathetic storytelling. it was just mystery after mystery with little explanation.

The island was real. Christian said at the end that the island was the most important times in all of their lives. I pretty much get all the stuff that the finale explained but I wish they would have said more on some things.......what the light was, what was the purpose of the island, what woulda happend if smokey got out, how smokey was formed....etc.

How come Desmond didn't become a smoke monster when he went into the light?

Did Fox really explain some shit on Kimmel, or was that some sort of troll attempt, and if so what did he say?

anyways, i was satisfied with the ending, Jack dies, and looks up to see the plane flying over head, not crashing- the start of his afterlife world where we picked up in the first episode of the season

ignore the troll

bigun: yes, the answers would have been nice on the surface but in the end probably not all that satisfying. then we would have had the same thread nitpicking all the answers and talking about how disappointing they were.

sometimes one's imagination is much better than reality. This is one reason why lingerie is so popular.

Even if this is the case, it's still a shitty thing to do. You can't just say "we'll let the viewers come up with their own ideas about what everything means" and call it a proper ending.

No, you come on.

Tell me where any of these characters reached their nadir and then turned it all around to become heroes.

Without the final episode being staged in the manner it was, where all the characters had this FORCED on them, the only character I can think of who had a real metamorphosis over the span of his appearances was Mr. Eko. Locke you could argue, but the counter-point to that is Terry O'Quinn was just given a new character to play, because Locke was dead.

I could literally go on for hours, just focusing on the last season, and this whole quixotic sham of an afterlife world where everyone was supposed to be happy, and had somehow formed some symbiotic consciousness to fill in gaps of information on each other.

It's all complete and utter horseshit. The writers didn't know what they were doing up until the very last, dug themselves a hole, and used the easiest way out. Point blank, period.

mr. eko didn't change and refused to apologize for all the fucked up shit he did before he crashed on the island. eko had no metamorphosis.

I'd probably care a lot more about the ending if I had watched seasons 4 and 5, and all of 3. After two, I felt entertained, but had a feeling it was just going in 30 directions, and would continue to do so until it culminated into a dead end (lol!)...I can't help but wonder if the entire show was a sham at the very core aimed at rooking the general viewership into a collective upheaval of theories.

they're probably the reason why the whole jack, sawyer, kate love triangle (quadrangle with juliet) was perpetuated over the course of the show.

This. So, I'll start, Rat Soup...Jimmy Kimmel said that he thought Jack died in the plane crash and everything that happened on the island was one huge "test" for Jack and Matthew Fox seemed to agree. I don't buy this. I think that everything that happened on the island really happened, and they all died when they died, if that makes sense. I believe the events on the island were "tests" and shots at redemption for all the characters.

^The knife was not a special knife. They made it clear that Locke lost his "powers" when the light went out. That's why he started bleeding when Jack hit him immediately after Desmond drained the light.

WAY TO BUILD UP BUILD UP BUILD UP AND EVERYTHING THAT EVER HAPPENED ON THE SHOW WAS FOR NOTHING (WELL UP UNTIL THE 2ND TO LAST EPISODE)

MIB said it all when he said "you died for nothing" except it was more like "you watched this show for nothing"

everything was for nothing

What was it for?

NOTHING

I just don't get how the ended tied into the 6 seasons of the show. Ok, so in order to pass to the afterlife, they needed to understand the people and situations that were important to their lives. But since they all just died whenever they died, it doesn't seem to have the impact as if they all died at once.
