I guess that the takeaway from this story is that 2016 wasn't Paul Manafort's first rodeo.

I'm now hearing again from the talking heads that "collusion isn't a crime."

Before it was "there was no collusion." Now it's "collusion isn't a crime."

For now, this seems only tangential to the Russia-Trump investigation.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/09/us/politics/fbi-raids-office-of-trumps-longtime-lawyer-michael-cohen.html?smid=pl-share

Quote :
"The F.B.I. on Monday raided the office of President Trump’s longtime personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, seizing records related to several topics including payments to a pornographic-film actress.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan obtained the search warrant after receiving a referral from the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, according to Mr. Cohen’s lawyer, who called the search 'completely inappropriate and unnecessary.' The search does not appear to be directly related to Mr. Mueller’s investigation, but likely resulted from information he had uncovered and gave to prosecutors in New York.

'Today the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York executed a series of search warrants and seized the privileged communications between my client, Michael Cohen, and his clients,' said Stephen Ryan, his lawyer. 'I have been advised by federal prosecutors that the New York action is, in part, a referral by the Office of Special Counsel, Robert Mueller.'

Mr. Cohen plays a role in aspects of the special counsel's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He also recently said he paid $130,000 to a pornographic-film actress, Stephanie Clifford, who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump. Ms. Clifford is known as Stormy Daniels.

Mr. Ryan said Mr. Cohen has cooperated with authorities and turned over thousands of documents to congressional investigators looking into Russian election meddling.

The payments to Ms. Clifford are only one of many topics being investigated, according to a person briefed on the search. The F.B.I. also seized emails, tax documents and business records, the person said."

Trump doesn’t email supposedly, if there’s a paper trail directly implicating trump it’s through Cohen

Trump is probably panicking right now, I think all of his patsies have been rounded up at this point.

Probably only one left is the Blackwater guy but I can’t imagine he’s not being watched.

Reading about the process to handle client-privilege data, it is very interesting how they have to go about it. Apparently Mueller's team won't be able to view any of the documents considered client-privilege. There is another team that goes in with specific targets that they have to look for, and then they disregard everything else. If they find what they are looking for, then they are able to hand it over.

Another interesting fact, due to the possibility of client-privilege, they had to jump through quite a few hoops to get the search warrant, and some Trump-appointed officials had to sign off on this, so in my opinion, Mueller definitely has something solid to have been able to do this.

Wasn’t Mueller working with Trump to take down the Obama/Clinton child-sex ring? Maybe Cohen is going to fake a RICO indictment to go under cover to take down the whole ring?

Ok so the big headline on CNN is that they're investigating Cohen's payments to Stormy and the other woman, the playmate.

I realize that there had to be good reason to do what they were able to do with Cohen as far as the raid is concerned but come on, certainly they were not so stupid as to use campaign contributions for that activity. No way they're that dumb. Especially with all of the money Trump has.

if the lawyer paid himself, it's not an illegal contribution. It is, however, an act Cohen performed without consulting Trump and would thus not fall under attorney-client privilege. When they dig into the financials of the home equity line and who's been making wire transfers into that account(likely Trump), it could show evidence of money laundering or bank fraud on both their parts.

the aggressiveness of the raid makes it seem like this was done more for posturing or baiting than for actual investigative purposes though.

no, it's an illegal contribution if it was money to stop her from talking to aid the campaign (which it was). it's very similar to what John Edwards was indicted for.

trump is awesome -> he drained the swamp and is the least corrupt president -> the president picks great people -> his lawyer would never do anything wrong -> because he is the best attorney and trump is the best they must not have anything on the attorney -> because they don't have anything this is obviously theater by the deep state to hurt trump
