im not thinking your engine could have seen catastrophic failure without you knowing. did you hear a valve break or a wrist pin snap or a bearing going? at any rate $1000 is an awful steep price when you can get a replacement motor for maybe 300 and swap it in yourself in a couple hours

I doubt it was rigged so well it would run only for that short period before popping. Have you even tried taking it apart yet to see for yourself? Sounds like a fun learning project.

Yup, that bike came with a free learning experience. What model is it? A two-stroke seizing isn't the end of the world. Might even be a good excuse to bore it out.

Is there a place to find a cheap, yet reliable, dual sport bike? And are they typically cheaper than sport bikes? I see that both Kawasaki and Suzuki no longer make a 500cc sport bike and I am looking for something cheap for commuting.

XR and KLR650 are pretty bulletproof and available on CL all the time. If you are looking to buy new, Kawi still makes pretty mild 650cc parallel twin that took place of the old 500. Unless you are very tall or your commute does not involve many stoplights, a streetbike may be a better commuter bike. Alternatively you could get a cruiser like an Intruder or something, those are dime a dozen and probably more comfortable than either one of the above.

Yep, I bought mine for $1500. That's a screaming deal, but I put new brake pads and fork seals on it, bar end mirrors, and stiffer fork springs, and sold it for $2200. You can probably pick one up in the off-season for $2000 or less all day long, in very good condition. You won't find more bang for the buck, period.

It's a Duke, 690 single cylinder, 2009-2011 probably. Those are pretty rad and pretty rare. They didn't really sell well, so KTM stopped bringing them over here in recent years.

^i saw a Derby GPR 50 on the interstate yesterday, struggling to keep up with the traffic. I was coming up behind him and smelled the two stroke exhaust. At first I thought WTF, but then I LOL'd.



I used to have an NT650 as well, that was probably the most favorite bike I owned to date. Saw one on the road just this morning, gray with a supertrapp exhaust just like mine was when I first got it.

i do, but both need minor repairs. xr80 needs a spark plug thread insert, pe175 needs rear shock seals (and oil), carb cleaning/tune

both need new silencers

I survived my first race! The R1200R held it's own very well out on VIR-South today on Pilot Road 2 tires. I was pretty much on par or faster than all the other bikes in my group on the straights, though my cornering was horrible during my first heat. I asked one of the Course Rider's to help me during one of the heats and after that heat, I went from being the slowest on the course to nearly one of the fastest, holding my own through most of the turns. He had me leaning far enough to scrape the bottom of my engine guards!

I improved greatly and look forward to getting a sports bike (strongly interested in a SV650 or equivalent) so I can start developing my skills further and keep myself from destroying the R1200R. No wrecks on my part today. I look forward to the next event. I think I did six or seven 20 minute heats. 4 or 5 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon.

Yeah. There were tons of debris when I was riding up. I figured VA must have had a helluva storm the night before.

it was really cool to see all the different setups other people were running. A few other riders thought I was crazy running PS2 tires. Thank god they were new because I went through about a third of the outside tread. I'm going to have to get some dedicated track tires and just swap the PS2 before I head out next time.

FWIW, the 100+ degree heat was not bad at all as long as you were in the shade or out on the track doing 40+mph. I thought I was going to die in my all black leathers, but actually, I suffered more sitting in the shade than on the track.

it's not a motorcycle, but it IS a two-wheeled motorized vehicle, so i figured i'd ask here

these are the original tires with about 6.5k on them...i was checking pressure in them this morning and noticed the cracking within the treads of the front tire (none on the side and none on the rear)...but when i got the scoot (about 5k miles ago), there was a central tread on the rear tire that is (obviously) now gone

do i need new tires? i'm not trying to be cheap and ride on unsafe tires because that's extremely stupid...but i truly wasn't sure if this is a "of course you need new tires, you dumbass!" or "no, those are perfectly fine" situation

if i DO need new tires, are they one step away from blowing out and getting me killed/maimed/injured? do i need just a new rear or both? better to buy them online and get them mounted or buy them locally (with a discounted mounting price, i assume)? either local or online, where? should i get new inner tubes at the same time?

I'd replace them but the combination of scooter pace and lean angle doesn't make me think you're in any immediate danger. I'd suggest the pirelli scooter tires if they come in 14's, only seen them in 16's and 12's

^ well, i regularly ride my scooter all out at 55-60mph (sometimes 63-64mph if it's downhill or the wind is right), so it might be a little more dangerous for that...the lean angle shouldn't be a huge deal, though

in y'all's experience with motorcycle tires, is it better to buy them online and pay to have them swapped or just get them at a place like cycle gear?

also, the front brakes are disc and the back are drum...should i go ahead and have the brakes done while i'm at it? they're not causing any particular problem, but having already messed with the wheels once (caught a nail and had to replace the tube in the back...smc helped with that because it was a bitch to get off), i don't really want to have to remove the wheels again any time soon

I don't know what kind of stands they make for scooters, but I assume you could use a milk crate like a dirt bike. Taking the wheels off ought to be really easy, as are replacing brakes. A good sintered pad is generally good for 3-6k of track braking, so I imagine if they make them for your scooter, you'd never be touching them again. you're going to have to take the wheels to cycle gear to have them balanced after the tires are mounted if you do it yourself but a tube tire is generally easier to install without a machine
