theres no point in playing a tough team ooc. Its a waste. If you win, you get nothing, if you lose, you're screwed. Its not worth getting players injured or starting the season 2-2 every year. SEC teams have it all planned out. they even manage to put the cupcakes late in the season to prepare for key games. 11/16/2014 11:38:59 PM |

Having a strong OOC is ONLY useful if you think you're going to be in the hunt for a spot in the playoffs. We don't have to worry about that for quite a while, so keep scheduling the scrubs and padding the win column. 11/17/2014 8:09:25 AM |

still, there's no real excuse for playing teams like Troy and ODU when we could at least TRY to schedule teams from P5 conferences and get similar results (NW, Purdue, Indiana, Iowa State, WSU, Vandy) or at least teams like South Florida. this "transitional FBS" and Sun Belt scheduling has got to go. I really hope Miss St doesn't buy out, because that's our best OOC opponent aside from ND (which is pseudo conference and we wouldn't be playing if not for the agreement). hopefully by then they'll be back down to our level (4 cupcakes, 2 conference wins) 11/17/2014 8:09:59 AM |

You also need to have a decent strength of schedule if you want to recruit players who want/need more national exposure.
You keep playing sun belt caliber teams, and you'll soon find yourself competing for sun belt caliber players.
Playing at least 1 P5 team shouldn't hurt your W/L, because you should be able to pick up another conference win if you're a halfway decent team.11/17/2014 12:50:58 PM |

I live in California. Only the FSU game was on TV this year. I caught every other game on ESPN ocho.
A few years ago I was able to watch OOC games against Tenn and S.Car on TV. That's about it. So good luck building a program when you're getting curb stomped by FSU or Clemson once a year during your only national audience appearance.
Those games matter.

As long as NC, SC, VA, MD, and FL recruits see us, we're good to go. We can easily recruit from those areas and the recruits can be top level. The ACC play helps us with those, but our OOC schedule could help if we schedule teams that would get us on TV. 11/17/2014 8:24:50 PM |

The "California" comment was to disprove the notion that ACC play alone is enough for NC State to get national exposure.
Then the argument shifted to "well, we don't need no stinking west coast."
Fine.
Now the argument appears to be that State only needs exposure in the bible belt to be competitive. Even if you accept that argument, you have to agree that playing ITT Tech and Strayer University 4 times a year isn't going to help your cause. 11/17/2014 8:35:55 PM |

Generally, yeah you're right.
But this year we had a gross shitty schedule and still struggled to become bowl eligible. I'm cool with playing shit teams until we're actually at a point where we don't need those wins just to have semi-respectable record11/17/2014 8:39:52 PM |

To the comments on conference games getting "exposure": I live in VA, about 1 hour from the NC border. Our games, with the exception of FSU, have been on a channel only available in this region on Dish, DirecTV, or extended packages (it's Comcast Mid-Atlantic Plus). I have cable, including regular Comcast Mid Atlantic, which showed the CAA over our game, which was on Plus, this past week. Oh, and ESPN3 blacks these games out because they're those stupid "RSN" games.
We aren't getting great exposure right now.
And if we do schedule 4 scrub teams, we should focus it on area teams. Lots more interest in App State or Charlotte or A&T vs us than USF.

I, too, live in California. Nobody gives two shits about the ACC out here and people barely even care about the Pac-12 outside of Oregon or maybe Arizona. Occasionally, I'll see an NC State hat or shirt since a lot of State alums wind up in SV. But people here REALLY don't care about college sports.

USF >>>> App, Charlotte, A&T. Maybe if you had said Presbyterian.
EVERYONE schedules at least two cupcakes, we should as well, throw in ECU and one "name" and we are good. I consider USF, Cincinnati, SCar, UT names. We just about always play one team. We should schedule Duke OOC since we play them once every ten years and are 20 minutes apart.
A) People bitch when we schedule SEC teams and lose and when we don't win and miss bowl games.
B) People bitch when we play a shitty schedule and do make a bowl.11/18/2014 3:43:47 PM |

so just play really good OOC teams and go 3-9? I'd argue going 6-6 and making a nationally televised bowl is better for recruiting and better for building a program than going 3-9 against really good teams. Not that I'm in favor of doing that every single year...but for where our program is now, it's perfectly ok.
There's a balance that we need, IMO. 1 or 2 "name" teams...ECU, USF, UCF, Cincy are all teams we've played recently OOC that I'd call "name" teams. Those are also all teams that we can and should beat. I don't mean we'll beat those teams every single year...but for the most part, they aren't regularly significantly better than us. And then, like every other team in the nation, schedule 2-3 cupcakes. It's nice to have the occasional "big" game as well...UT and South Carolina recently. Ohio State when Amato was here.

Playing shitty teams to get to 6-6 will only get us to shitty bowls. Playing good teams, and red-shirting freshmen will make us a better program, and able to contend for conference championships. We have the talent to do the later, unfortunately our coaching staff doesn't know how to utilize that talent.11/19/2014 8:42:23 AM |

there is enough conference games plus a bowl game to build the program and learn to play at a higher competitive level. taking Presbyterian to the woodshed is vital at this juncture. keep em comin 11/19/2014 8:54:08 AM |

We don't have the talent to contend for a title right now. We may after a few years of redshirting DD recruits. Right now though, we have a pile of upperclass scrubs on defense and that won't change for another year or two.

^Right and for where we are now, going 6-6 or 7-5 is the best scenario. Showing progress by actually winning games, making bowls, and getting the bowl swag.
Like was mentioned earlier, the ideal OOC schedule is 2-3 cupcakes and 1-2 "name" teams (ECU, USF, Cincy the occasional Tennessee or SCar) you don't want an OOC schedule with 2-3 virtually unwinnable games for a program that is in rebuild mode.
Besides, didn't the ACC (or maybe all P5 schools) agree to schedule at least 1 OOC P5 game per year?

I'm not against a shitty OOC schedule. We play in a killer division.
I'd just rather play at least one OOC game that increases our profile in a new area once a year. I don't really mind if it's a game at a bad team but in a good conference. UNC always seems to manage that.
I'd much rather do that and play at Indiana or Purdue like we did in the O'Cain/Amato years than play at ECU again.

that's what I'm saying, we don't need to go out and schedule Alabama or Oregon or Kansas State when a Kansas or Iowa State or Vanderbilt will do; just don't schedule fucking Troy or ECU. there is NOTHING to be gained by scheduling those stadium destroying STD riddled fucktards (doesn't improve recruiting, a L is an embarassment, not our rival, not a real school, etc). if unc-cheat wants to be the flagship so bad, let them play the little sister of the poor. 11/20/2014 8:53:02 AM |
