wow, amazing.... in response to developers complaining that after months of work, their Apps are being rejected by Apple because they "duplicate functionality", Apple has now included the rejection letters as part of the overarching iPhone Developer NDA http://www.tuaw.com/2008/09/23/effin-nda-now-applies-to-rejection-letters-too/ http://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/23/apple-extends-non-disclosure-to-app-store-rejection-letters/
Quote : | " Aparently, Apple has now started labeling their rejection letters with Non-Disclosure (NDA) warnings:
THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS MESSAGE IS UNDER NON-DISCLOSURE
Readers should note that Apple's developer correspondence may have already been covered by the original NDA, but Apple is now making it clear." |
hey Apple: + NDA =

There's nothing Apple can do that will make people who complain about this happy. Apple's options are
1. Ban or block 3rd party apps that duplicate current or future OS features. 2. Release Apple apps that compete directly with 3rd party apps, likely winning since Apple's version will work better with the OS. 3. Don't develop apps that are similar to 3rd party apps. 4. Announce its development plans well in advance to warn 3rd part developers to steer clear.
How good is each option for developers and for apple??
1. Ban or block 3rd party apps that duplicate current or future OS features - Developers who get blocked whine about wasted efforts. - Developers get bought out by Apple if their app is good. These guys are happy. - Developers who get through don't care (assuming they aren't developing anything that will likely be annexed by Apple). - Apple likes this option because they have absolute control. However, denials do tip their hand somewhat (hence the new NDAs). They have to deal with negative press from whiners, some developers drop out.
2. Release Apple apps that compete directly with 3rd party apps, likely winning since Apple's version will work better with the OS. - Developers who get outcompeted whine forever, like these Konfabulator guys. - Developers get bought out by Apple if their app is good. These guys are happy. - Developers who survive are disappointed because they lose profits to Apple's app. - Developers with non-competing apps don't care. - Apple loses some control. They still have to deal with negative press from whiners, some developers drop out.
3. Don't develop apps that are similar to 3rd party apps. - Best option for developers. - Apple has no control and relies on 3rd part developers to come along to lead the platform in innovative directions. They don't have to deal with developer whining.
4. Announce its development plans well in advance to warn 3rd part developers to steer clear. - Close second option for developers. - Apple and shareholders hate this because it goes completely against their event-based release mantra. Competitors get advanced notice of plans.
How does this affect the consumer?
First of all, the consumer doesn't give a flying fuck about third party developer. They do, however, care about the company that makes their expensive phone (at least for the contract and warranty period and however long they want to keep the phone)
1. No effect since Apple usually makes the best version or buys out the best version and beneficial if Apple gives app out for free with the OS. 2. No effect since Apple usually makes the best version or buys out the best version and beneficial if Apple gives app out for free with the OS. 3. Get apps that are less integrated/solid. Less ambitious apps since they can't change the OS. 4. No effect. Consumers get the best possible apps, here.
So, as a consumer who is not ideological and who is simply looking for the best phone, 1, 2, and 4 are fine with me. As a shareholder, 3 and 4 are out of the question.
I like option 2 the best. It's pretty obvious that this is the best balance between developer, apple, and consumer interest.
Nevertheless, option 2 has probably generated just as much whining for apple as much as option 1. Until these most recent cases, the Konfabulator story was THE example that people held up as evidence of how Apple is evil. The Konfabulator story draws no sympathy from me, though. Apple's product turned out better. Konfabulator developers need to get over it.

^ plz to read http://wilshipley.com/blog/2008/09/iphone-app-store-let-market-decide.html
you seem to be missing the entire point of open competition. Does Apple (or Microsoft, or any OS company) release an API, then prevent developers from creating applications that duplicate built-in apps? NO, because that would be fucking retarded 9/23/2008 9:09:52 PM |

New old Fake Steve Jobs weighs in
Quote : | "I hate to say it but Apple may end up reliving its nightmare experience in the personal computer market — that is, arriving ahead of everyone else (in 1984) with a device that was really cool and really well built and really showed what the platform could do, but then keeping everything closed and thereby ending up a niche player. Will iPhone end up being the Macintosh redux? I wonder." |

What are your opinions on the AT&T reception and 3G reception in Cary/Raleigh or other parts of NC. I have been without a cell phone for near a year and am considering getting the iPhone purely for all the features besides a phone and a lot of web browsing.
Could you guys give me thoughts on if its worth it in our area? I've read a lot of negatives based off reception (att and 3g).
Thank you! 10/2/2008 4:21:13 PM |

Official iPhone app for Barack Obama http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/iphone
A co-worker downloaded it and we played with it, and it's really, really well done. It's obvious they were not just trying to take his website and put it on the iPhone, but they really took advantage of many of the unique features of the iPhone. For example, it will go through your address book and group your contacts by the state they live in and order it by battle-ground states, then give you a list of people to call and mark as "voting", "undecided", etc. And it will use your location to find local events for you to attend. very, very well done.
It will be great when/if he's elected President to if the iPhone app (and other apps) will continue to be supported. It will be a revolutionary way to keep up to date with a President's message or what he's doing day-to-day 10/3/2008 8:52:54 AM |

I just turned off 3G but havent called anyone to see if that actually works. I did upgrade to 2.0 the day I got my phone. Is there a better fix than turning off 3G?
