"All you really need is root to get it working"

Sure. Many of us on this board can root a phone but the point is that we shouldn't have to work around our cell phone carrier's walls to get access to the "unlimited" data that we're paying for. The unsubsidized market is the only way around this crap and in the long term will prevail. We expect total unobstructed access from our ISPs... why not from our cell phone providers? It's all data.

BigEgo - we'll see... battery reviews have been quite positive actually. Check out the engadget review (even on 1.6). I wont buy it unless the phone is 2.1+ We'll see soon though.. roumors say that the US version may be 2.1+

The funny part about it all is is that this subsidized phone is a profitable option in my current scenario. I should profit from purchasing a Dell Streak after selling a subsidized white iPhone (may as well take advantage of the upgrade) in addition to the Nexus One.

How do I make my droid X take my google contacts out of my phone contact list (and my facebook contacts off my phone contacts list) or make it so the phone defaults to showing my phone contacts and not all of them at once?

Settings -> Accounts, click on the email associated with your phone and you should be able to uncheck there.

Also, in Contacts > Display Options > Select Only Contacts with Phones, that'll remove anyone from the contact list that you dont actually have a phone number for

you can just but the unsubsidized euro version of the Samsung Galaxy S which has everything from video calling on 3g to wireless tethering. Its about the same as the nexus one. and tru the galaxy s with froyo will run over the competition in every way xcept if u prefer a bigger screen and dedicated camera button.

For those that haven't yet purchased pdanet, I stumbled over what seems to be a bit of a flaw. After the trial period runs out you don't have access to https sites. However, at some point in the purchase process the software opens up ALL https sites (not just paypal). So, if you're really cheap you can just execute that little hack and get full functionality. This is with 2.42.

And before the small-dicks rush in here and bitch at me, I went ahead and paid for a license anyway.

whoops. Seems like people are having lots of problems with the X
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/droid-x-discussion/3441-warning-installing-3rd-party-launcher-will-break-your-blur.html
Quote :
"when the dx was announced to have blur included i wasnt that bothered because I am a fan of Ander Web's ADW launcher, and naturally the first thing i did when getting the dx was to download and install the newest version of market.

at the time not thinking i didnt delete any widgets from the blur homescreens and set ADW as my default launcher.

later i noticed those widgets left on the blur homescreens were still using resources, so naturally i went to switch back to blur to delete them, after a bit of digging around i realised there isnt a way to get back to blur after setting a 3rd party launcher as your default home.

naturally i uninstalled ADW and rebooted the phone figuring blur would pop back up on boot, now heres the issue

IT WILL NOT. you will be stuck with a black screen and no home, for some reason when they included blur they didnt factor in that anyone would hate their ugly annoying widgets and would use something else.

there are two ways to fix this, long press search and voice search for market, and the market app will launch, allowing you to reinstall any third party launcher

or you can boot into recovery and factory reset your phone.

I need an app like "lockpicker" that circumvents my company's retarded lock requirements when I have my phone connected to their exchange server. Anybody know of one that works for the droid X?

not that big of a deal really. factory reset, you're done. once they get 2.2 on the phone it will even be less of an issue as Market will download all the apps you previously had installed automatically and you'll be good as new.

just another reason why manufacturer's need to stop fu#king up Android's default UI, personally I can't live without LauncherPro

But having to factory reset just because you use a different launcher is a little silly. I'm fond of ADW Launcher myself.

I mean look at the benefits of Apple being able to lock down it's hardware and force people to use it's content, manufacturer's are just trying to take Android (open-platform) and lock down the hardware so people only have "their" way of doing things.

In the DroidX in the contacts when you hit the menu button you get: Add contact, Backup assistant, search, display group (which just gives you the list of groups and lets you pick which one to look at), my info, more. if you select more you get: Manage accounts, settings, share name cards. Manage accounts takes you to the blur account thing. Settings get you one option: whether you want new contacts created as google contacts as well as phone contacts.

Contacts remembers the last group you had selected so if you go in and choose Phone contacts and then go back to the home screen it will open back to phone only. If you kill contacts with task killer or reboot the phone it will go back to all contacts. I haven't found any way around that.

I'd like to be able to sort by last name instead of first name but there aren't any other contacts settings that I've seen.

^5 I asked about contacts a while back. I never got an answer and I haven't figured out how to sort by last name either. The responses were generally geared toward "I don't care, I just use gesture search". Which, I too now just use gesture search.

Yeah, I was talking to the AT&T rep I bought my old iPhones and U-verse from last week and he checked with his manager and told me that it would be $350. Glad I talked myself out of it. Still looking for someone to take over my AT&T contract, but will probably just end up paying the ETF. Glad to be rid of them though. I haven't had a single dropped call since switching to Sprint; data is faster, even though I don't get 4G at home and it was only 3/1 where I did get it; and no one complains about echoing or poor call quality when I call them using Google Voice (which is so awesome on Android compared to that shitty web app on iPhone).

^Ouch, that sucks. Exchange that and ask for a service credit "for your trouble."

Also, I got 29 hr on my last Evo charge. I've been getting a lot more since I got rid of ATK. That was a pretty light-duty day (~2-3 hr of Grooveshark, 1 hr phone, 50 texts, some FB and twitter, 30 min-1hr of web browsing, updating a few apps). Today I got 15 hr and still have 12% left. That's after ~3 hr of phone, 30 texts, 1.5 hr of web, 1-2 hr of Grooveshark, FB, updating 10 apps.

Question about android software updates: do you need to backup all your settings/apps before hand or will things actually remain intact?

The Galaxy S line seem to have a better form factor. Droid 2 is coming, keyboard is still kind of blah. Sure HTC has more devices up their sleeves also.

I went and looked at a Droid X in store today and I am glad I did: really nice and powerful phone but it actually did seem a little bigger than I want to carry around in my pocket all the time. I think I might go back to making the Incredible my first choice.

^lol. Will try it ty. That's the one bad thing so far for me about Android (aside from no copy/paste in Gmail app which is supposedly fixed in 2.2 ). Games' graphics and framerates suck compared to even my old 3GS. Hopefully the Galaxy S phones will be a huge hit and other manufacturers will see the need to beef up their phones' graphics capabilities.

Also, re:your previous comment about giant phones. The Galaxy is nearly as thin as the "iDon't(make calls)4," and only has a 0.5" bigger screen. I don't have large hands at all, and I can wrap my hand around the Evo. I'd agree on the Streak, which looks a bit ridiculous as a phone.

the evo and droid x are too big for me to comfortably carry. i am a big guy and have large hands, its just how they feel in my pocket thats a problem. its not an issue now because i don't buy new phones, but when i am getting one at their eol it may be annoying. the incredible is probably max size for me.

^yea when I was using the X today in store I *loved* having the extra screen real estate, but it felt a little too big for me to want to carry around in my pocket unfortunately :/. I was disappointed as I had seen the measurements and didn't expect for the size to surprise me in person.

The incredible is a pretty small phone. Still very thin but not too large even with plenty of screen real estate. That's why I've kind of reverted back to that as my #1 and hopefully the initial battery issues people complained about aren't an issue anymore.

Do you guys wear tight pants? I have my Evo in a thick silicone case and it doesn't seem large to me. I can definitely feel it, but that way I don't need to reach in my pocket to see if it's still there like I did with the iPhone (was always nearly losing that thing).

Also, Costco still has the Droid X in stock if anyone is looking for it. It's sold out everywhere until July 25(?).

^^ I will admit that the day I demo'd it I was wearing jeans and my jeans are more on the "fitted" side but that is what I am wearing when carrying my phone around in most of the time outside of work.

Loved the phone outside of that though. It was really the only thing I didn't like a lot. I also agree with someone else after messing with a few different phones recently and then demoing the droid, incredible, and X all side by side: a 4" phone is probably ideal for me. Just a little more real estate than the Droid or Incredible but smaller frame than the X. In the end I think I'm still planning to order an incredible next week though.

That comment ^ reminds me about something that's been kinda bugging me. Random side-topic time!

Have any other Droid owners noticed a dust or lint problem crop up immediately behind the glass front? I usually carry mine around in my pocket, and I've noticed that my phone has an increasing amount of dust particles coming in apparently from the upper-left corner. It doesn't affect the usability of the phone, but it makes the screen harder to read outdoors, etc.

^^lol, does this apply to cargo shorts as well? I wear cargo shorts and they seem to be selling them everywhere still.

When I'm wearing slacks, I usually have a sport coat or suit jacket, so I have it in the inside pocket.

^I can see how that might be an issue. I wear baggy jeans because they're more comfortable to me--and I can also fit big phones in them.

Have you looked th the Galaxy phones? Even if you're stuck on Verizon, you might want to try the AT&T or T-mobile versions out to see whether it's worth waiting for Verizon's version (Fascinate, I think). The Verizon version looks the best also, IMO. I'd get the Sprint one if it comes out before my 30 days is up on the Evo. I really want qwerty & its gaming capability.
