A talented starting 5 and virtually nothing else, unless you count Painter (I don't).

Gottfried did his best to supplement the roster in a pinch, with Johnson and TDT, but the shallow depth has screwed us repeatedly this season.

I credit Gottfried for turning Zo into a hell of a PG and developing Leslie into the force that he has been over the past month.

Sidney brought in talent, the problem was not developing it or pushing the guys to be in shape,and the lack of a coherent offensive system. Constant mental lapses were another sign of the lack of coaching.

no one is arguing that sidney didn't do a bad job at getting the most out of his players.

Look I hated Herb and still do but it's not a fair comparison to say Gott is better than Herb because he got the tourney year one and herb did not.

This is the most talented roster we've had in quite some time. Maybe even more talented than Herb's last season. They just played losing basketball. He's wrung some of the losing play/attitude out of them but some of it still remains deeply entrenched. We are a work in progress.

Love his attitude though and the way he makes State feel like we're actually State and not just some science experiment in daytight compartments.

That roster was from his next to last year, when we beat the defending national champion UCONN Huskies to go on to the Sweet 16. In Herb's final year we were the clear #2 team in the ACC until late in the season where we proceeded to let a freshman from that team 20 miles to the west with a huge "will" come in and embarass us on senior night, and also lose to the last place Wake Forest team twice in one week. We limped into the tournament, pulled out a win over Cal, only to get dominated by Texas. That game would have been much worse if Fells hadn't come off the bench and provided a spark.

He didn't get fired. He left for a 50% raise at a less stressful job. We weren't going to counter ASU's offer, especially considering he was on the hot seat, and we didn't have a team that was a lock to make the tournament again.

that texas game was the final straw in my straw that had been chewed through 5 years ago.

To be honest Im still pissed at him for kicking Damien Wilkens off the team. We had the chance to be a really competitive team in 2001 (nearly made the sweet 16 even without DW who had a ~10 year career in the NBA so the haters can put that in perspective and without Trey Guidry who could have really helped on that team).

Also I hate Herb for ruining Mike Bell. The guy was a Conference POY at like Central Florida and yet Herb couldnt figure out how to mold him into a 9th man?!

I don't care if Lowe's players are talented or not, he didn't recruit them himself. Coaches have their own schemes and look for players to fit into them. The fact that Gottfried was able to get them to play to their potential is what's remarkable,

It's not like he inherited a Royal Flush or anything either. CJ Leslie is the only one who'd be a UNC/DUKE/UK type player as a Freshman.

I think the biggest thing Gottfried has done is make us LOOK like a college basketball team. The motion offense, the physical conditioning, the intensity, the excitment ... As Hubert Davis said following the UNC game, State looks the part of a tournament team. I'm not even sure most of Herb's tournament teams "looked" like they belonged. Hats off to Gottfried for that.

I'd also say that Face isn't completely far off, though I'd say most fans expected an NIT berth this year before the season started. When we started winning and looking like a decent team (circa December or so), I'd be lying if I said I didn't think we'd have a chance at the tourney.

not that this takes away from your overall point, but i was pretty sure texas was a first round game. a 7/10 matchup, iirc. we played cal a few years prior in the tourney and lost in the first round...but i may be misremembering that.

and to get back to the preseason expectations, i thought we had the talent to possibly make the tourney, but i was definitely thinking we were less than 50/50. i wasn't expecting to make it this season, but i thought it was possible given the talent.

yes Mike Bell was like a top 60 recruit I believe.

And to say he was a CONTRIBUTOR is ridiculous he was like 20ppg and was the conference player of the year.

The guy could play, Herb just wouldn't let him.

Herb ruined a lot of promising players and underachieved consistently with a ton of talent.

And I think Lamarcus Aldridge went like 1/16 FG in the game Texas lost in the tournament that year haha
