at $40, I don't really mind if I have to upgrade down the road (highly doubt I will though).
1. This uses an exploit similar to the Xbox360 DVD drive hack (which even MS hasn't been able to fix). 2. Nintendo has a history of not giving a fuck about this sort of thing.
this will not brick your system, unless you fuck up the install.2/2/2007 11:16:29 AM |

i cant speak for nc, but in md, it seems like the bigger name electronic stores (bestbuy, circuit city, etc) don't have them unless its just delivered, but a lot of the smaller video game shops and places you might not think (like CompUSA) have them. if you shop around, you should find it.
i got 2 classic controllers, a wiimote, and a nunchuck a few days ago, but i had to go to three different stores and buy one at each store.2/2/2007 12:37:17 PM |

You obviously haven't been paying that much attention to this sort of thing for...oh...the past 5 years or so. With the Gamecube, GBA, and now the NDS Nintendo is constantly upgrading the software protection on their games. The gamecube modchip makers and NDS Flashcart developers usually end up releasing new software about once a month to combat new measurements Nintendo puts in place to try and stop piracy. I wouldn't be surprised if once you got your pre-order for the Wiinja there were already games hitting the stores that won't work on that chip. But don't worry. You'll be able to upgrade the bios on your modchip right? Oh, what's that? you can't? Guess you should have waited for an upgradable solution. Maybe like the one they just announced today? Hope you like reheating solder points on your Wii motherboard.2/2/2007 1:07:55 PM |

Do you realize that there is an extremely easy way to flash the firmware on your DS?
Do you realize that Nintendo recently redesigned the DS and is calling it the DS Lite?
Do you realize that they didn't bother to even try fixing this exploit? They didn't even relocate the contacts, for fuck's sake.
Nintendo really is not that concerned with piracy, at least in comparison to sony + ms.
Go ahead and keep being skeptical. This chip will continue to work until it craps out. You should read up a little bit on how it works.
edit: You are basically saying that Nintendo will come up with a fix for something that MS has been unable to fix to this day.... right.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Microsoft is all about stopping piracy . Never would have guessed that seeing all the crazy ass shit people were doing with their XBoxs. And Sony is concerned, but they don't have a damn clue.
Didn't Nintendo have some big operation a few years ago that resulted in the breakup of a giant piracy ring in China?
Edit: Here we go: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?section_name=pub&aid=1234
Not sure who started the raid though. Also note how it states how hard it is to pirate a GC disk, though the Gameboys are easier.

Quote : | "Do you realize that there is an extremely easy way to flash the firmware on your DS?" |
Yes. And that's relevant here how? There are MUCH easier ways to pirate games than flashing the firmware anyways.
Quote : | "Do you realize that Nintendo recently redesigned the DS and is calling it the DS Lite?" |
Yes, I own two of them. Again, I'm not really seeing any sort of point here.
Quote : | "Do you realize that they didn't bother to even try fixing this exploit? They didn't even relocate the contacts, for fuck's sake." |
Maybe because it wasn't a problem. Passthrough devices cause MUCH more of a problem for the DS and DS Lite than firmware updates. Moving some silly contact point would be like putting the titanic back together after it's on the bottom of the ocean. Too little too late.
Quote : | "Nintendo really is not that concerned with piracy, at least in comparison to sony + ms." |
That may be partially true to a very small extent considering that Microsoft and Sony rely on software to keep them out of the red. Nintendo is the only one of the three that is making any money at all on hardware. But if you're saying they don't care at all or they've somehow given up, then I should stop arguing now. You're too dense to understand the larger words I'm typing anyway.
Quote : | "Go ahead and keep being skeptical. This chip will continue to work until it craps out." |
And you're basing this statement on...wishing really hard? I hope you blew out your candles afterwards, Sparky.
Quote : | "You should read up a little bit on how it works." |
I would be willing to wager I've read more about it than you have. Or at the very least just as much, seeing as how they have released next to NOTHING about the chip. But if you want to continue to pretend like you know how it works, and lie about things like there being some switch on it that allows you to disable it (not in any of the pictures or text I've seen) then feel free. It's quite obvious you don't know what you're talking about anyway.
Quote : | "edit: You are basically saying that Nintendo will come up with a fix for something that MS has been unable to fix to this day.... right." |
Do you even know how backups work on the Xbox 360? Every month or so a new game will be released on the 360 that detects the firmware of the drive has been edited. So every month or so you have to update the firmware of your DVD Drive in order to play the newest games. It's the same way with the PSP. it's the same way with the gamecube, it's the same way with the DS. Being able to upgrade your chip/bios/firmware/flash cart software is a vital part of being able to stay ahead of the piracy game. And your mod chip can't be upgraded. It's very likely that it will be obsolete before it even arrives. And if you read any of the message boards discussing it you'll find the majority of the knowledgeable people out there agree.
You bought the first thing that came along. That's fine. I'm sure you'll be happy with it for a while. Just don't act like it's all you'll ever need. At least not before educating yourself of all the facts. And certianly don't try to mislead anyone else with your uninformed half-truths and outright lies.]2/2/2007 5:00:58 PM |

nintendo has always been big on piracy. it's part of the reason they stayed with cartridges so long and the reson they used the mini dvds for the cube. how long did it take to mod the gamcube??? they still have their games burned from the inner ring outward making them invsible to most dvd drives.some drives can read the disc after a firmware update but they take 2 days to rip and u still need to descramble the raw isos.they sound pretty serious ab it to me. 2/2/2007 11:37:23 PM |

the only guarantee seems to be that making people line up for shipments allows all of the numb nuts assholes with no lives to go get their 11th and 12th wiis to sell on ebay, and you can't tell me that national chains like target/bb/etc. get that much more business out of it, they would sell the same amount of wii's and games by just putting them out there, and its not like people stalking wii's down are going to go pick up some pampers and deoderant that they wouldn't have otherwise gone to target for, or a new flat screen that they wouldn't have gone to bb for 2/4/2007 3:03:40 PM |

A store could be accused of "baiting-and-switching", which is when they advertise something, but don't have it in stock and then try to sell you something more expensive. Plus they'd have to deal with some angry-ass customers. 2/4/2007 3:06:07 PM |

True, but then they can never get loyal customers into their store to buy one, and they can't advertise that they carry them until demand levels off. Stores still want to be able to sell you alternatives, but they don't want to be sued for deliberately misleading customers. Plus, if I didn't have a Wii already, I'd be much happier to show up early on one morning knowing some units will be in stock than I would checking in 24/7 on the off chance I'd find one.2/5/2007 1:27:20 AM |

Also if they hold them and sell them all at once you make sure that those 4 or 5 ppl that show up every morning even though they already bought 4 cant get all of them. Also they have found out that if they can just get ppl in the door they make money. 2/5/2007 2:07:34 AM |

id say its almost to that point. when i went around looking for controllers, i was surprised how many wii's i saw (although im not in raleigh).
the places that had them the most were smaller video game shops in strip malls (rather then a typical mall). most general consumers will go to bestbuy/circuit city/walmart and any other big name store, so those are the hardest places to find them. the more unknown locations (small game shops, compUSA, toys r us) seem to have a few in stock everytime ive been in one.2/5/2007 1:22:25 PM |
