the trades have to be submitted to the league by 3pm, then, pending approval, they are announced.

that's all i can say pretty much

i mean, i was pretty much joking yesterday when i said that stuff

i'm happy to have him back (hence my name), but....dang

we get rid of an injury prone player, and get one in return

maybe this will spark cole intoa tear late this season

can't wait to see 50 more one-on-one's with Cole losing his edge and/or missing the net. he has good speed, but could never seem to put the puck in the net when he had a breakaway or a man back.

Maybe Staal will stop being so emo now that he has his BFF back, and Samsonov play well with him last year as well.

I also wonder if this move was made to bring some fans back into the arena seeing that he was a fan favorite and all....doesn't justify it totally obviously, just a thought to kick around....

Staal trying to handle the entire defense by himself

Ruutu laying on the ice because he missed an overzealous hit

Cole laying on the ice because he's Erik Cole (read: dove/fell)

I dont love the trade anymore than the rest of you but I have come to the point where I can see the rationale.

Moving Williams (who may or may not be able to regain his old form) clears 3.5 million off the cap for next year.

They get a player who will help for the stretch run, who hopefully will be able to get Staal back on track, freeing up that money to resign Ruutu or Anton.

Would I have loved to keep O'Sullivan and Kotalik? Yeah but Kotalik is a UFA who will command as much money as Cole for next year, and you dont know what O'Sullivans willingness to be here is with the whole situation with his father being a psycho.

Basically we traded Williams for Pitkanen, a 5th and a possible 2nd? Not sure how that whole second round pick situation will work out if we get one or not.

You can spout whatever sarcasm you like...the problem with Erik Cole isn't talent, but effort.

I watched him take shifts off for five years. I watched him dive for five years. I watched him screw Eric Staal out of a hat trick because of a ridiculous flop at the blue line when we were up a goal with twenty seconds left.

I gave up on Erik Cole a long time ago.

then you must've given up on staal as well
i've watched him take shifts, and a game or two, off, and watched him as he slid down the ice after being taken down with his hands up at the refs looking for a call, as the rest of the team back checks.

now that my sarcasm has run out

i'm still not sure what to think really
i am disappointed that we had patrick o'sullivan in our grasp and a 2nd round pick, that would've been nice in rebuilding for the future

but, as much as i like williams, he hasn't been able to stay healthy, and i doubt he would be able to return to his previous form...and you could say the same for cole. and hopefully cole's injuries are pretty much done (he's missed 20 games the past three seasons, compared to williams' 78). maybe this will spark the team, who knows, but it should put some more seats in the arena.

Staal takes shifts off, yes. Most players do.

Erik Cole takes a vast majority of his shifts off.

The Erik Cole move used to be to put your head down, beat a guy to the faceoff dot, and turn the corner on him. In recent years, it's to separate yourself from the puck at the blue line when you try to dodge past some one.

As I said, I was done with Erik Cole a long time ago.

Well I can't argue your point about his move...
But everyone wanted another big forward...and we got one

I hope it works out though, for the team's sake

This was a trade to please the fans, that is all. Cole is a fan favorite, seats will get filled. If we can get into the playoffs, it's icing on the cake. If we don't, at least we got one of "our guys" back. It's an excuse for whichever happens.

But with the moves Buffalo, Pittsburgh and NYR made, and the move Florida didn't make, you had that feeling we had to do something also.

Another thing that should probably be mentioned is that despite many attempts, Justin Williams and Eric Staal never displayed the slightest bit of chemistry together. It was a disaster any time they were paired up. We needed Justin Williams to be a top line forward here and I don't think that was going to happen (injuries aside) since Mr. Staal is too picky with his friends.

Another thing this suddenly brings to mind is that now I have to deal with even more Eric Cole, Erik Staal, Erik Stall, etc etc misspellings.

On another note, I don't really think this will put anymore butts in the seats. Maybe a handful, but the fans here always have somebody to latch onto as a fan favorite, and don't really seem too fickle about guys getting dealt. A lot of people were sad when guys like Commodore and Cole were traded, but I never really saw it affect anyone's fanship.

Now, on a final note...

Quote :
"This is a story scheduled to run in tomorrow's paper, about the woman known as the "Dancin' Granny."

Of course, it might not run. Our Page 1 budget is fluid until a few hours from now, but right now it has a shot at running.

Anyway, she is Joyce Johnston, 81 and she lives in Youngsville and is a devoted fan of the Carolina Hurricanes. She attends every home game and her nickname derives from the dancing that she does at the games, which is captured on the Jumbotron. This will likely be her last season, because she has Alzheimer's disease.

Staff writer Matt Ehlers wrote the story and shot the video. You can see the video here. It's already live on our multimedia channel. If the story runs in the paper tomorrow, you can read it in print or online on our web site. If it doesn't run tomorrow, then look for it Friday. "

Guess all you dancin granny haters can take comfort in the fact that she won't be around much longer.

so...

Ruutu - Staal - Cole
Whitney - Cullen - LaRose
Samsonov - Brind'Amour - Eaves
Bayda - Helminen - Walker/Conboy

When Jokinen comes back, either roll him on the 3rd or the 4th. Helminen will be back in Albany. Brind'Amour has been non-existant, I have no problems with him being on the 4th line at this point, demote him. Scratch Bayda for the rest of the year, barring an injury to another forward, and raindown hellfire on anyone who considers resigning him for next year. Nothing against him, but he offers nothing special that we don't already get out of the other forwards available. I would roll Conboy on the 4th line from here on out, we need someone like him in the lineup.

I'm fine with the 8/9 of the top 9 though, and I'm sure some of those will shift around if necessary and a line gets hot. My real question is where do they fit in all of these guys next year, also to be worded as who the hell isn't coming back?

Ruutu - Staal - Cole
Whitney - Cullen - LaRose
Samsonov - Jokinen - Eaves
Conboy - Brind'Amour - Walker

Sutter, Bayda, and random AHL'ers after that.

ESPN is doing that in all their articles. I noticed it in a Crosby article a couple weeks ago. Worst goalie in NHL history.
