You can get them by driving to Missouri, which is the closest state Deschutes is distributed in. I've heard they're going to start distributing in NC but I doubt it will be anytime soon

Way back in they day, I went to Bend, OR and helped my dad with a cooking event that was sponsored by Deschutes. We had a private dinner at the brewery w/ free beer, samples in our room and then beer at the event. I knew nothing about beer at the time and poo-poo'd it all.

i was kinda miffed that the store had them in the fridge though, when there's a clear "best after" date of next july written on it.

So I drank another Cascade sour last night. This time it was The Vine. a very good sour beer, but after having had Sang Noir it just pales in comparison. The Vine was similar to a traditional belgian gueuze and better than most at that. But the Sang Noir (and Royal i'm sure) adds so many more layers of flavor. would be a great pair to taste side by side if anyone ever has the opportunity.

Had all 3 at the Avery SourFest and totally agree about the layers of complexity, Royal is the most complex, then Noir, then The Vine. What I liked about The Vine though was it's smooth balance and how drinkable it was for a sour, Royal was pretty much a sour explosion in your mouth.

I've had Boulevard for a long time and while the Smokestack Series is really really good, their year-round offerings I've never been fond of (not bad, just better alternatives). Tank 7, phenomenal, BBQ, Saison-Brett, Rye-on-Rye, all so so good.

Collaboration #2 was great, hope Collaboration #3 hits this market... prolly will.

Picked up two bottles of Black Butte XXIV, pretty excited to age this one with XXIII last year. Also picked up a CCB/Swamp Head Cognac Church on a Hill

1.) i love mules

2.) ^ want ba CoaH

3.) It seems as if the wife's favorite style has moved to barleywines. Big DIPAs and barleywines seem to be what she's into most now. Anything vinous, sour, bretty, fruity, or in any way wheaty in any detectable sense is a no-go (with the exception being CC's cucumber saison), but bigass barleywines and DIPAs.

also, if anyone wants some bbxxiv, im kinda swimming in it. i hope that we get this much abyss too.

1.) Sierra Nevada/Russian River Brux is going to be a great beer...in about a year. I bought two, drank one young. Going to put the other away for a long time. when the bretts finally go to work that beer is going to have some nice tartness to it.

2.) Epic Brainless on Peaches was very disappointing. anyone have experience with other Epic Exponential Series?

Brux is finally coming next week to Denver, I plan on aging one for sure.

We're also getting the new Alpine-New Belgium Super IPA this week, should be good.

^^English, American, Barrel-Aged?

I have to be honest, there are very few beers that can touch a solid BA English Barleywine

We got it in NC earlier this week, it's probably my favorite New Belgium beer (though I haven't had La Folie).

well that explains the overlap with DIPA's... go BA English over BA American, it's completely different when you have the whiskey or bourbon pair better with the english malts than it does with american hops, then again if she loves hops she most likely won't like english bw's

Good trip to Boone and an impromptu tasting this weekend. This is what I picked up.

2010 Bell's Expedition Stout
2011 DFH/SN Life & Limb
2011 Great Divide Barrel Aged Old Ruffian
2011 Epic Big Bad Baptist (really stoked about this one)
2012 SN Beer Camp pack.

also, the owner surprised me with a couple cans of Sun King Osiris Pale Ale and bottle of Cigar City Jose Marti American Porter. Would have never had a chance to get these if it wasn't for BA and a couple quick messages back and forth with the shop owner.

the tasting with a buddy of mine included 2011 Event Horizon, 2011 Mikkeller Big Worst, 2010 Expedition Stout, and a few of the beer camp bottles.

i'm pretty sure it's alpine's recipe and NB just did the actual brewing at their facilities, so it's not really even a NB beer. it's a great beer though, and it's awesome that alpine will get publicity for it. they're a tiny hole in the wall brewery about 30 minutes outside san diego, and their IPA is probably the best i've ever had. just incredibly well balanced. unfortunately the only place you can really get it right now is at the brewery, which sucks because i've been in san diego for the last 6 weeks and will be here til the end of september and i can't find it anywhere.

Terrapin Samurai Krunkles - one of the better Side Projects in recent memory

DFH Positive Contact - thankfully didn't have to buy an entire case for this bland beer. It wasn't bad by any means, but I could hardly pick up half the flavors it's said to have.

My haul from Ohio:

-Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale
-Rockmill Brewery (Dubbel, Tripel, Saison, and Witbier) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/23737
-Three Floyds Black Sun Stout (the only bottle of 3 Floyds in the shop)
-Dogfish Head Positive Contact
-Southern Tier Pumpking

The outright SN Beer Camp winner this year is the Oatmeal Stout. I'm definitely going to seek out and put a couple away to age for a year and check back.

but i was also really impressed with the Floral IPA and Imperial Pils. the Imperial Red, however, just didn't have much spark. all in all, a great release and 4 very well done beers by SN, as if that's ever in question.

i'm excited about their new imperial stout being released. It's called Narwhal and is based on the Fritz & Ken 30th Stout.

Stone IRS is my top pick, then Old Rasputin, then Oskar Blues Ten FIDY.

Bell's Expedition & Great Lakes Blackout are both good too!

it really is impressive how old raspy is cheap, readily available pretty much anywhere in america, and really really good.

Old Raspy really is an amazing beer to be so available. I've turned several people to "the dark side" using OR when all they wanted was hops.

I did pass by on this year's BA Old Raspy though. I just couldn't justify the price at the time.

Stone IRS is great and $7 for a bottle is unbeatable.

I think i'm going to devote some closet space this coming RIS season to cellar some 12oz varieties. Bells, Founders to name a couple that I want to put away.

Founders IS is good too, got Stone IRS, Founders IS, BA Old Rasputin & Ten FIDY in the cellar now. For some reason I cannot hold onto regular Old Rasputin long enough to even attempt cellaring it.

Cantillon (St. Lam & Rose) hit today in Denver, gone in 15-minutes, happened to be the 15-min. I was on the phone. 6-bottles per store. FML. Still hunting other stores, but they don't like saying if they got it or not.

got some Founder's Frangelic Mountain Brown as well as some BA Naked Evil in a trade (which I actually traded away thinking I didn't want to keep it, big mistake) as well as a 375ml of Cantillon Classic Gueuze better than nothing I guess.

Super IPA, Stone 16th, and Brux tomorrow

picked up two bottles of jester king's weasel rodeo (made with kopi luwak coffee)... ive had it on draft once, and it's just outstanding.

couldn't get to the store in time for the whiskey barrel aged version, tiny batch.

also, it appears as if sixpoint is finally hitting my area, and picked up a resin 4 pack. it's pretty great if you're into that type of hop profile.

hahaha, it's a palate destroyer. i love hot and spicy food, all kinds of peppers, but a taster of this beer was enough.

So along with still searching for and drinking new and seasonal releases i've started going back to some older beers and styles that I haven't had in a long time or ones that are so readily available that people, myself included, tend to always look over.

Picked up Samuel Smith Nut Brown, Oatmeal, and RIS. Ayinger Celebrator and Paulaner Salvator Doppelbock. and finally did my side by side of Rochefort 6, 8, and 10 last night. Will move on to the other Trappists one by one.

in an effort to keep living like 19 year olds and not 30 year olds i had a "beer olympics" saturday.

our team did not win, so as a punishment each member of my team had to chug a GFK at the end of the events. this was not my idea, and i did not know it was going to happen until it did. the act of chugging it made it somewhat worse i think, as my lips and chin burned for quite some time.

an hour later someone pulled out a duclaw retribution, and i still couldn't taste it. even after countless more games of flip cup.

pretty much like death. it was in the mid 90s saturday, and rained all morning so it was humid as a mother fucker.

for 17 people we went through a keg, 7 cases, a few bombers here and there, and 14 large pizzas.

cleaned up a little sunday, then went to the beach with a gallon of water and a gallon of gatorade to recoup.

got lucky and it thunderstormed again about 4am sunday. cleared the yard out that turned into a vomitorium.

i have no desire to host this again.
