I don't see Smart as the second coming of Jimmy V or anything, and I also wouldn't put him at the top of my list, but I dont' get the vitriolic hate for the guy.

Or is this just a typical internet nerd being a keyboard toughguy deal.. *cough* *cough* Ernie

Miller, Wright, Barnes, donovan... they ain't coming here. If you still think we're getting a high profile, big name coach, get over it. It's not happening.

Throw enough money at him and we might be able to get Brad Stevens.

Stevens is still program building right now, but he could easily hit a wall soon, sort of like Mark Few did a couple years back.

Yup, Few or Stevens I'd take either, and we probably have the resources to make it happen.

^^^ I think it's the hiring of a "hot name" more than anything else they don't like. I admit, he is certainly not my top choice but it's just idiotic hyperbole for someone to say they would rather have Lowe back.

^^ We could, definitely. He knows this could be his chance at a big pay day.

So, do people realize how hypocritical it is to say that 5 years ago we should have hired Miller with 2 years of coaching experience...

but now we shouldn't hire Smart because he only has 2 years head coaching experience

Give me Shaka over most of our current options. He learned from Donovan, runs an up tempo exciting pressing system, has "buzz" right now, is young and is known to get the most from his players. With our current players in his system, we could be really good next season.. we are really built to be in this kind of system, and all it takes is one season to start building something special.

Look, I would have loved to get Miller, Barnes, Donovan, Wright, etc.. but unfortunately it looks like that won't be happening. Smart should be the next option in my opinion.

If you think I am somehow disingenuous in my not wanting Yow to hire Smart, I assure you 1000% I am not. If this is one of your semi-monthly weaksauce attempts at calling me out, what's up man, I see you.

I dislike Smart because at this stage in his career I don't think he's ready for a high-major job. Could he take a job somewhere else and prove me wrong, sure. Could he get hired in two or three years and prove me wrong, sure. Right now it's too much of a risk in my opinion.

Why am I so belligerent in my dislike for Smart, though?

Because of people who say stuff like this

Quote :
"runs an up tempo exciting pressing system"

If you're going to support the guy, great, but at least do some research.

Smart is a good coach and has shown that he can make a deep run in the tourney. Look at the peripherals, though; look at the big picture. That's where we learn if he can sustain this or if he's Jim Larranaga. He has one win in his career against a good coach playing with a good team, and that's Painter. His defense is awesome? Guess which at-large team had the lowest rated defense? Virgina Fucking Commonwealth.

Wrong on many accounts. He was groomed and ready for a big job. Had been an assistant here and many were ready to give him the job including myself. Jed never considered him.

All of you wetting your pants for Shaka must not have seen Jeff Capel getting fired right before Lowe stepped down.

I just hate people like that they say nobody wanted him, there were PLENTY of people wanting Sean then.

And for the Shaka deal, I have to side with Ernie that the dude doesn't have enough experience to succeed at a big job yet.

[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 10:58 AM. Reason : Who really thought Lowe was a better option than Sean?]

^^it was a generalization.. of course there were exceptions

So, working under Herb is better than working under Donovan and Purnell? LOL

Also, you cite Jeff Capel as a reason for not hiring Smart.. for Miller, you could just have easily cited Skip Prosser or Pete Gillen for reasons that Miller would not succeed.

^ that is another great point.. if sidney lowe can recruit here, anyone should be able

Shaka's recruiting won't be a problem

This guy is supposedly an incredible recruiter...seriously

http://www.vcuathletics.com/information/directory/bios/Wade_Will

If we save some money on Shaka, i'd imagine we'd pay this guy a ton to make sure he's retained and stays here to ensure we can recruit high calibre talent.

I just worry about his X's and O's in the big leagues. I'm not sold, either

I was really hoping that NC State could at least avoid the stream of public rejections this time around. Isn't that one of the main reasons for hiring a private search firm? The leak by Miller's father is a thinly-veiled attempt to increase his son's bargaining power in the inevitable post-season raise negotiations. Classy? No. Expected. Of course. The only way NC State doesn't end up looking bad in this situation is if the actual hire comes very, very soon - the explanation then being that the poorly timed overtures to Miller were a last ditch effort at a very long shot choice, hurried only so as to not risk losing the actual hire by waiting too long.

he just has to dispatch all the rumors that all the sports analysts keep kicking around so his team focuses on the mission at hand....

I flipped over to 750am the other day to hear what Big Mo had to say. If you dont know who Big Mo is I recommend you check him out.

One of the callers said his top 3 choices were

Leonard Hamilton
Al Skinner or Purnell. Can't remember which one

Then he asked if Shaka Smart was "a brotha". And said he would be his third choice.

I would think that millers' dad leaking how sean would stay at arizona would hurt his renegotiation. Arizona would firmly know that he passed up 3million because of his family, and given the fact (I believe) that they want him to pay for his own facilities, I don't exactly see too much of a merit based raise coming his way

^^^^Its a ploy by Miller. He has already accepted the state position but doesn't want to ruin his team's chances in the NCAAT. So he sends his dad out there to spread misinformation.

Ahh...I said I wouldn't go higher on Smart if he one an extra game or two...but I've gone and done it. I've got Miller (pipe dream), then Smart and Grant.

Miller only had two years HC experience when we ignored him five years ago and look how we're regretting that.

The guy can coach and he can recruit. Sign him the fuck up if we miss on Miller.

"NC State interested in VCU's Smart

By Jeff Gravley
Updated 1 minute ago

NC State has an eye on VCU head coach Shaka Smart.

Multiple sources told WRAL on Saturday that Smart is a coach of interest for NC State. He was recently contacted by either the Parker search firm or by an NC State intermidiary to gauge his interest in coaching the Wolfpack.

But the longer he wins, the longer it will be before Smart turns his attention to his future. VCU beat Florida State to advance to the Southwest region finals against Kansas. That's the deepest NCAA run in VCU school history.

Multiple schools have an interest in hiring Smart. The 33-year old coach is in his second year at VCU, his first head coaching position. He has a 53-20 record at VCU finishing fourth and fifth in the Colonial Conference. The Rams received an at-large bid to this year's NCAA tournament after losing to Old Dominion in the Colonial tournament finals.

Smart's salary at VCU is a reported $325,000 but school officials are already working on a new contract that would boost his salary significantly.

Prior to VCU, Smart was an assistant for Billy Donovan at Florida. He has also been an assistant at Clemson, Akron and Dayton.

Smart played point guard at Kenyon College in Ohio where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in history."

Miller and Barnes have both semi rejected NCSU Stevens hasn't. Do I think he is much more likely than Miller right now? Not at all but his apparent silence (as far as message board chatter) is interesting. You have to assume there have been feelers put out there.

What happens if Smart runs it all the way to the Championship game and becomes the next Brad Stevens? Yow is making a good move by getting in his ear early before he really blows up or worse, gets sentimental about the kids he is coaching.
