same thing happened to us when bowerbirds played kings. some drunk bitches standing right in front of us blocking our view with their backs to the stage chatting loudly and obnoxiously.

You all do know that these places are bars, right?

a bar that you have to have a ticket to get into

and both nights were sold out, so it's not like there were a bunch of walk-ins

I don't see as having a ticket is any different from a cover charge, minus the fact that it was sold out in this particular occasion.

Regardless of all that, you can't be fascist about who gets a ticket and you can't tell people how to act when they're at a show; especially if it's at a bar. That's a pretty hipsterfuck mentality.

I see where you all are coming from; I'm not defending the behavior and I usually keep my mouth shut at shows when the bands are on. But you should know to expect it by now. Incessant bitching about how people act when they drink is pretty trite.

I didn't know that being respectful was the hipsterfuck mentality, because really, that's all it boils down to

its as if they are raping the shows just so they can be in the middle of it all.

they are taking their "wallpaper/background music" culture into our local shows goddamit. they can have u2.

You guys should buy all the tickets from King's next time and re-sell them only to people of whom you approve going...

It's a matter of showing respect to the artist on stage, Mr Scrumples. My argument isn't necessarily that those people shouldn't be allowed to buy tickets, my argument is that if you're gonna pay $10 for a ticket to see an artist, you should show some respect to that artist when they're on the stage. You show respect by not being on your phone the whole show and by being quiet when the show calls for it.

I've been to MANY shows at Cat's Cradle (which is just as much of a bar as Kings) where the crowd was exponentially more respectful than the crowd at Kings this past Saturday night. And most of the people in those respectful crowds were from Raleigh, so I'm not really sure what was going on at Kings this past Saturday night.

Even when the ticket is for a nationally touring artist on a national record label? That's quite a bit different than shelling out the $3 to get into Slim's when a band's playing just to hang out.

Also, Kings is not a bar any more. It's only open when there is a show/event, so it's not like a crew of Kings regulars roll up every night and pay to get in no matter what's happening. The only reason to go there is the show...the bar is downstairs.

Even when Kings was all one room, the show space was separate from the bar area, so if you wanted to pay the cover and hang out, you could at least keep your noise away from the stage.

I noticed that many around me who were talking seemed to be friends of that opening band. They were all very quiet, attentive, and overly excited during their performance, but proceeded to run their mouths during Megafaun.

As others have said, it's all about respect and common decency. Respect for the band, and respect for those around you. I have no problem with folks talking here and there --- but carry on an entire loud fucking conversation about your office that week, how your friend dumped some girl and she's a "whore" and/or commenting loudly on the band's appearance for minutes on end? Get the fuck out. (and yes, those were the topics of conversation by the Glenwood South looking crowd of hair gellers behind me).

All I'm saying is that you should expect these people to be at shows by now. All the time. I've never found any different.

You can take these concerts as some sort of ...esoteric soundscape that... likens your ears to interpreters of an abstract masterpiece all you want. But these venues are watering holes, man. I don't think I've ever been to a bar, music venue, anything of the like on a Friday, Saturday night and expected people to be quiet.

^This weekend? That looks like a good time. Unfortunately I won't be around.

Also, I'd just like to mention that buying records at shows is awesome. I've always gotten the best deals doing this. Even though I have to carry around records for a uncertain amount of time...

Yes, buying at the show when possible is the best. Usually it's cheaper, and even if it's not you know all the cash is going straight to the band.

Free show tonight at the Pour House. Show at 9. I hear they are amazing live. Everyone should at least go check it out since there aren't usually a lot of legit prog shows in the area.

Big Boi played at UNC tonight. feel like that went totally under the radar.

(btw, fuck NC State. I'm sure we have a crazy concert from Plain White T's in the works as a counter to this)

ActionPants was at the Big Boi show. According to his tweets, the mix was awful and there was no band, just a DJ.

Never seen Beirut live, but I'm a big fan.
Now, I just need to learn enough Italian to order some tix

Usually it's cool to like music that your parents hate.

That doesn't apply in situations where your parents are right.

I made a very, very brief appearance at Double Barrel Benefit last night. It was more or less to give KNC money, because I was with a bunch of friends who are basically Phillistines when it comes to music, and I wasn't crazy about anybody in the lineup for either night. I paid admission fees to basically order 1 beer and leave.

Oh, and I didn't want to talk during a precious show...
