John Wall to cut list to two?

MemphisRoar.com had a chance to catch up with the consensus #1 point guard in the nation for the class of 2009, John Wall, on Thursday afternoon.

In the recent months, much speculation has surrounded the list of schools and the timeline of a decision for Wall. The usual suspects on Wall’s list of schools are Memphis, North Carolina State, Baylor, Kansas and Duke. Duke is the latest comer in Wall’s recruitment, but has looked to make up ground relatively quickly in the past month. On Sunday night, Wall took a trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium to watch Duke take on Virginia Tech. When asked about his visit Wall said, “It was a good game. I enjoyed it, but it was just another college game.”

Wall’s mother recently returned home from an on again, off again stint in the hospital due to recent health complications. Wall said that, while his mom was away, he really missed his mom’s home cooking. Speaking of home cooking, many believe that Wall has kept NC State and Duke in mind with the possibility of staying close to home and his mom due to her recent health issues. Wall, a very well spoken and respectful guy, seemed to have the utmost adoration for his mother and indicated that she’s doing very well as of late. “My mom’s doing really well,” Wall said. “She’s back home resting, taking her time trying to get better.”

Another issue related to the health of Wall’s mother is the possibility of heading overseas (like Brandon Jennings) in order to help with the needs of his family. Wall says that this is not an issue at all. “No. Not at all. I’m not thinking about that at all. I’m really not at all. I just want to keep my head on the court and on school and try to get qualified for college.”

With constant phone calls, pressing issues of his mother’s health and the stress to perform consistently on the court, it seems as though it would be hard for Wall to be able to feel and act like a normal high school student. For a kid who enjoys playing NBA 2K9 and Madden on PlayStation 3, eating corn and shrimp and “goofing off with friends”, Wall has a ton of ‘grown-up’ issues on his plate. According to Wall, he continues to “focus on the court and the classroom”. Wall talked of trying to plan a senior prank in the coming months and said, “With all the coaches calling and so many phone calls for interviews in one week, it gets hectic but that’s just what comes with it. But most of the time I get to be a normal kid; get to hang out with my friends and goof off. But practice is when you have to be serious.”

On the court, Wall’s Word of God team has struggled as of late. Most recently, Word of God fell to Ravenscroft, 68-59. “We’ve been really prepared…but the players and the coaching staff were just on different pages. We haven’t been playing like we used to. So, we’re working on getting back to the way we used to play and try to get on a roll…try to get on the same page,” added Wall.

Most, if not all, of the people reading this are probably fans of college basketball, so it’s only fair to let you know that Wall is a huge fan of the game as a whole. In terms of players, Wall said that his two favorite players are Stephen Curry of Davidson and Blake Griffin of Oklahoma. Wall, who claims to watch a ton of games said, “It is crazy right now. I think with any sport you can’t automatically look at it like this team is favored and determine who’s going to win. [College basketball] is in the regular season right now and it’s exciting the see the kind of intense games going on. It’s crazy. I mean, wait until March Madness starts. I’m always watching teams; the teams I’m looking at but even teams I’m not just to see if anyone else fits or stands out.”

“I enjoy getting to see that all these schools that you see on TV are all recruiting you and you have a chance to go there and possibly put your name in the legacy book of that school.” Waiting for someone to stand out, Wall said, “I just want to take my time and make a smart decision. I want to see who is going to stay in school and who is going to leave.”

That comment prompted the question: Is there any chance you might cut your list down to two or three schools in the coming weeks or months?

Wall’s answer:

“I might,” responded Wall. “It might be cut real soon to just two schools. You never know.” Wall did not comment on which two schools that might be.

why do people keep asking the same questions over and over and over?
this has been heavily discussed on almost every page of the last half of this thread
can you do your own research and read a little bit?

i mean use the freaking post search

good article from N&O 2-5-2009

Quote :
"RALEIGH -- So that's what all the fuss is about.

Watching John Wall throw down overhead slams with both hands, going slam for slam and block for block with Ryan Kelly, it was readily apparent why fans were lining up three hours before tipoff Wednesday to get one of very few spots in Ravenscroft's gym.

Kelly, Ravenscroft's Duke-bound forward, had 29 points to Wall's 28, but the Word of God guard and top-ranked senior in the country led his team to an 18-point win, raining 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Holy Rams cruised, 82-64.

It was exactly what the capacity crowd came to see: two of the best players in the country putting on a show, worth every bit of hassle.

There were officially 1,200 fans packed into Ravenscroft's A.E. Finley Activity Center. Half of them were already there by 4:15. Ninety minutes later, the doors were closed as hundreds still stood hopefully in line outside.

Ravenscroft coach Kevin Billerman said he had 37 messages over the 24 hours leading up to the game from people hoping to snag tickets, and Wall was getting pleas up to the moment he took the court.

"I had two people call or text me before the game trying to get in," Wall said. "I said, 'Good luck.' "

Ravenscroft and Word of God met last month, a 68-59 Ravenscroft road win on Jan. 8, but Word of God's gymnasium can only fit a few hundred people, so many fans -- and area high school players -- circled this date instead as a better chance to see Wall and Kelly face off.

Former NFL coach Bill Cowher, whose daughter plays for Ravenscroft's girls team, was there. So was N.C. State men's basketball coach Sidney Lowe, signing autographs and making a conspicuous appearance along the baseline in an attempt to catch Wall's eye.

And for good reason -- Wall was sensational. When he wasn't dunking, he was roaming the lane to swat away shots and showing off an unexpectedly accurate outside shot.

Arguably, it was Raleigh's most notable high school game since Broughton and Leesville Road filled Reynolds Coliseum almost eight years ago to the day.

That game was moved to N.C. State's campus by Leesville Road after the same matchup a year earlier saw fans turned away from Broughton's gym, drawn by a similar matchup of high school superstars -- Broughton's Shavlik Randolph and Leesville Road's Anthony Richardson.

No one expected fans to be turned away from Reynolds, but almost 12,000 packed the old arena, creating a rush-hour traffic jam that brought cars on Western Boulevard and Hillsborough Street to a halt.

Randolph was at that point the No. 1 junior in the country and ended up at Duke. Richardson was headed for Florida State and his teammate Shawan Robinson to Clemson.

Not coincidentally, this is the first time since then that Raleigh has boasted two prospects of such distinction, with Wall ranked No. 1 in the country by Rivals.com and No. 2 by Scout.com, and Kelly ranked No. 11 by Scout.com and 20th by Rivals.com.

Throw in Wall's junior teammate C.J. Leslie, an N.C. State commitment, and Ravenscroft senior Matt Wilson, who is going to UNC-Wilmington, and there was enough talent on the floor to compare to that famous game at Reynolds.

"There were three or more NBA players on the floor tonight," Word of God coach Levi Beckwith said.

Wall refused to entertain any questions about his college plans, but he already has the professional celebrity down pat.

After the game, he stood on the floor for more than five minutes signing programs, hats, sleeves, shoes and a basketball for a swarm of young fans, many in Ravenscroft T-shirts.

"I'm used to it by now, from the AAU circuit," Wall said. "Usually, there's not that much."

Not usually. But this night was different, for Wall and Kelly and everyone fortunate enough to watch it in person. "

Six definitely in Wall mix
Submitted by rogervdh on 02/05/2009 - 12:33
Tags: Preps Now | Duke | John Wall | Miami | N.C. State | Ryan Kelly
After his team's 82-64 victory at Ravenscroft on Wednesday night, Word of God basketball coach Levi Beckwith confirmed that Miami is still in the recruiting mix for point guard John Wall, along with N.C. State, Duke, Memphis, Baylor and Kansas.

"Obviously, it's a great city to play in, a great city to live in, plus they're getting a lot better," Beckwith said of Miami.

N.C. State head coach Sydney Lowe watched the game from an end-of-the-court seat — he made no apparent contact with Wall — and Dave Telep of scout.com reports that Kentucky assistant Glynn Cyprien was there, too.

How much fun is it to be so good? Wall, a 6-4 senior, smiled after pretty much every play he made, and when he shoots as well as he did from long range against the Ravens, he's unstoppable. He scored 20 of his 28 points in the first half when the outcome was still in doubt, and he blocked at least five shots. He looks ready to start for whichever team he chooses.

Ryan Kelly of Ravenscroft, who's headed to Duke, started out cold from the perimeter and played more effectively closer to the basket. He did most of his damage — 29 points — in the second half but looks as if he could stand to bulk up before making an impact in college.

Word of God's 6-9 C.J. Leslie showed great ability to finish around the basket and even to handle the ball while running the floor, though his hot-dogging led to a few turnovers.

interesting portion of today's NandBlow's article on John wall

http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/preps/story/1398073.html

Quote :
"Beckwith said he likes Memphis, Baylor and N.C. State as good fits for Wall, who noted that his mother, Frances Pulley, has been a State fan "since she was born." Clifton described Sidney Lowe as "one of my favorite coaches,""

just another nugget to get our hopes up even higher so that the crash will be even more painful when he goes elsewhere.

call me crazy, but the last thing we need is a one and done.

"Syndey" needs to focus on getting players that want to help BUILD a program, not abuse it for 1 year and skeedaddle to the NBA.

^crazy.

i don't think having an NBA-bound PG on our team next year will hurt us. Won't be the same as J.J. Some of our "stars" lost lots of minutes to him, and they took it personally and got their feelings hurt. Wall is not going to be getting the minutes of any of our "stars".

And then we'll still have Mays, Brown, and Harrow after he leaves. No more PG problem.

The Wolfpack Hoops blog is one of the best sources for recruiting information right now. I'm fine with him linking to the site after showing updates on recruits so that we can read the whole story. And the information is all free too. So it's not like he's trying to sell anything.
