a local brewery to me, southern star, has a "pro-am" series with a homebrew competition each year, and then puts out the winner's brew as a seasonal. This year's winner was a DIPA that's actually really good.
at a $8/4 pack. it's pretty damn fine. great amber color, nice piney nose, resinous feel, great malts to back up huge bitterness. at 10% it's wayyyyy too drinkable.
a friend found a shitload of 3F oude gueze in new orleans and is bringing me some of that and some pretty things jack d'or back.
will be good to contrast the jack d'or to the shittastic homebrewed saison i just got carbed up. could be a swing-and-a-miss.
going to tennessee and kentucky this week to see family. wonder if i'll find anything interesting. 8/21/2012 10:02:36 AM |

^you're kidding right? Noble pils is great when it's fresh, probably one of Sam Adams better beers and one of the best Czech pilsners... maybe it's the style you don't like? (or maybe it's old beer, or you're being sarcastic?)

their hofbrau bock, too
BA gives the plznr an average rating and the hofbrau a "good"...but at $1/bottle, it's great

A group of home-brewing enthusiasts and transparency advocates want the government to hand over the recipe for the home brewed beers created at the White House.
As reported by Government Executive, a Reddit user has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) for the recipe, arguing that "disclosure of the requested information is in the public interest because it is likely to contribute significantly to public understanding of the operations of activities of the government."
The FOIA request added: "If you could send me a copy autographed by the president, you'd be the coolest FOIA officer in the whole federal government."
Another group of internet users has created a 'We the People" petition, requesting the recipe. That petition needs more than 24,000 more signatures to generate a response.
News of the White House home brews leaked, so to speak, when it was served at two White House parties last year. More recently, Obama brought a number of White House ales on trail to hand out to voters as gifts." |

I was going to post about touring the New South Brewery in Myrtle Beach, SC about a week ago. I've never had anything from New South, but I was stuck in Myrtle Beach and why the fuck not.
A couple of really great guys, some really fantastic beer, and a nice little brewery (that they can't self-distribute for cash at... because South Carolina). I was really disappointed to hear that they stopped distribution in North Carolina because they're trying to widen their native South Carolina routes, but I don't blame them. We talked for a long time about the differences between North Carolina and South Carolina in terms of laws, and how North Carolina is really ahead of the game because of less restrictions (and thus drawing a lot more business, especially now with Sierra Nevada and New Belgium coming in).
Anyway, if you're in South Carolina I'd definitely hit them up. 8/23/2012 1:51:54 PM |

A co-worker of mine (and avid homebrewer) has set up a bottle auction fundraiser at Triangle Wine Company this Saturday, to benefit a member of their club who was severely injured in an accident earlier this year and is facing a long road to recovery and astronomical medical bills. i used to live in san diego (and after that in pasadena) before moving to vienna last year
i ended up passing on the speedway (was ~25 euros) and brought back a few mikkeller brews instead (beer hop breakfast and 1000 ibus)
olbutikken was ridiculous though, great bottle shop (especially for europe) -- i thought the blÄbaer was a bit overhyped but still a really nice beer
and mikkeller was a super chill bar with a nice selection, 20 taps plus an extensive bottle list
copenhagen is a great beer city, some nice beer options at many restaurants and bars around town so you're not stuck drinking carlsberg everywhere, i'm very jealous 8/27/2012 7:47:46 AM |

spent some time at Foothills this Saturday before and after the wedding.
Jade IPA is so damn good. Brought home a growler full. This IPA really needs to replace Hoppyum, hell even Seeing Double, it's that good. But they have no plans for full distribution of it. I suppose that makes since, Pacific Jade hops seem to be the "it girl" in hops right now and we need to see if supply can keep up with demand. But if any of you are able to be in W-S definitely give it a try.
The Cottonwood Pumpkin seems to be slighly lighter now that it's under the Foothills umbrella. It's still very good, but it's a lighter amber color with a lighter body than in years past. It used to be a very filling beer after one or two, now it seems a lot more sessionable.
and speaking of Cottonwood, with Endo IPA that now puts 5 IPAs and 1 Pale Ale under their belt. (Endo IPA, Seeing Double, Hoppyum, Jade, Little Foot Session IPA, and Pilot Mtn. Pale). It would seem that one or two of those has to go. Jade and Little Foot are tap-room only so they'll be more limited in the brew schedule, but I wonder if Endo has enough following to warrant keeping now that the buyout is complete?

all of them do. this is how all of the bb annis work, as far as i know. it's still good "fresh" though. drink one now, drink one later.
also, while in kentucy this past weekend i loaded up on fantome saisons, some more hoppin frogs (non-ba) B.O.R.I.S. and D.O.R.I.S, and picked up that nogne o and terrapin collab for the hell of it.
stopped by a really, really nice shop in bowling green ky with a small but fantastic bottle selection (seriously, like, <100 bottles, but all top notch.. three floyds to fantome), and a great tap list. we were only passing through, so the wife and i shared a snifter of goose island matilda and a pint of three floyds alpha king. the shop itself was tiny, with like a 3 seat bar and mostly catered to the wine and bourbon crowd. but if you're driving down 65 any time soon check out wino's depot.
