We traveled really well to the Champ Bowl, when we beat the shit out of West Virginia.

Their fans were incredibly obnoxious I recall.

I'd be willing to bet we travel better than any other school that hasn't won a conference championship since the Reagan administration.

EDIT: Actually never mind I looked at some of the SEC schools with championship droughts. The Mississippi schools and South Carolina definitely travel better, but they've all seen more recent success than us, if not recent championships.

^That's a fair bet. But that still doesn't make us a great traveling fanbase. I'd say we are better than average. We are below the big schools like Nebraska, FSU, Alabama, etc. (national championship hopefuls perennially), and we are better than non-football schools Wake, Duke, Maryland, etc. (teams that have almost no chance or really don't care). We show up to a lot of games, but we definitely don't show up like schools that win. And it will take a lot of winning for us to get to a point where we are like Oregon, USC, or Texas. Compared to schools that are on our level in terms of quality yes we are a much better traveling fanbase, but we are in no way competing with the championship schools.

Note for fun: Jimmy V (Survive and Advance) 30 for 30 is on ESPN right now until 10 am

^ I can't tell yet if you are a troll or an idiot. But yes, we don't have the traveling fan base of nationally branded schools that compete for NC consistently. Thanks for pointing that out.

in the ACC it's probably
1) FSU
2) Clemson
3) VT
4) might be Louisville, although I honestly am not totally familiar with them.
5) State

that seems about right to me.

Syracuse follows its basketball team well or at least has fans all over the country. No one gives a fuck about the football team which has sucked dick since Donovan McNabb left.

The when you look at FSU, Clemson and VT, they also don't give a shit about basketball. If you combine football and basketball, we'd be right near the top of the conference as far as combined interest and travel.

yeah they'd be up there for basketball, but i was just thinking football. i don't know if they travel or just have a lot of fans spread out. whenever we played them in bball a few years back (maybe gott's first year) and they were #1 they had a lot of fans at the PNC

^that's true. like, traditionally state would be a basketball school. but as of late we've experienced little success in basketball or football - but the fanbase is large enough to get behind both. we'll always have a strong basketball following among the fanbase due to tradition and just being in NC. but i think amato deserves a lot of credit for building more a football atmosphere/culture here.

He took a 3-9 team and turned them into an 8 win team. No team has shown more improvment. And we have great young players. Sky is the limit. Next year might not be great but lookout the year after.

Also time for WolfPack2017 to stfu about us not being travelling fans. Obviously it was going to have more UCF fans since it was in their own backyard, but our fans sounded pretty loud and proud to me. The folks at the "better" bowls are kicking themselves for not taking us given our fan turnout and how well we played.

Quote :

We didn't even beat the "mehh" ACC teams last year. We won the games we should plus 2 as an underdog including today. Maybe not great season, but better than what we usually call a good season. Expectations will be high next year.

One year removed from a good season is a throwaway detail to describe a team. Let's not play that game.

^^ A team that returned 17 starters and won their conference again. It isn't a throw away detail, it is a detail that just shows UCF isn't some joke of a program collecting crappy wins under O'Leary and have real talent coming through.

ucf is a power program. not in a p5 program but they just came out of the fiesta bowl. they are legit.

this was a heck of a win. we dominated the game. thats why their fans are losing their shit right now over it. it was 31-10 at one point?

Was a big fan of the doeren hire until we started calling timeout on kickoffs.

After last two road wins im sold again. Gonna chalk up last year as a fluke, he dida hell of a job this year.

We're darkhorse acc contenders next year. Suck it TOB lovers we definitely made the right decision.

We will miss that d line badly but damn our offense could be ferocious next year.

i think you should hold off on that kind of talk for next year. we're going to have MAJOR youth on both lines and special teams. those voids will be tough to fill. it could be a 1 step backwards 2 steps forward kind of thing but i don't expect much out of next season. 2016 is when i expect us to be the darkhorse contenders.

Depends who is playing QB in 2 years.

I hope we've built enough reputation with how well Jacoby developed throughout the season plus 3 already in the NFL that a young superstar would be inclined to sign with us now, redshirt a year while Jacoby finishes his term, and then is ready to start by 2016.

Darkhorse meaning 25-30:1 odds.

We're loaded at the skill positions and I think our playcalling mixed with jacobys ability to elude pass rushers makes us a top offensive unit unless our line realllly stinks.

Defensively I agree the line is a huge huge question mark. Our lbs stunk and our secondary was spotty but I think both units will improve a good deal with this years experience. So we really just need to fall off too hard on the line. Personally I think the defense will stink next year and we have an obvious drop off on special teams wo TOB's laser like focus on kicker/punter at the expense of every other position.

Bottom line we were a top ~40 team by seasons end. Theres no reason we cant finish top 40 next year. And three months ago we weren't sure we'd win a single game this season.

Improvement was down right drastic and should give us a huge push for late signings and the following years class. I mean 6 weeks ago we had nothing to talk about. Our recruiting trips consisted of playing parchesi and connect four in the living room with recruits little brothers until the surrogate father got off 2nd shift and asked us to leave the house. Now we can say hey we're with nc state you may have heard of us

You mean like 4* recruit Jalan McClendon that is already on the team and will be a RS SO when Jacoby leaves?

I'm more worried about our o-line next year than the defense. It wasn't that good this year and we're losing two RS SRs.. D-line has solid players (Hill, street, rose) just need to see who else plays for depth.

McGirt should be able to step in on the o-line immediately, and Roseboro will get plenty of reps along the D-line.

When healthy, our O-line was awesome this year. Look at our rushing totals and YPC...never seen that at State.

We lose a couple solid guys on both lines, but we also bring back several solid guys as well as some young talent. Anyone see Street just bulldoze their tackle in the first quarter last night? Didn't get the sack only because the QB released it early (incomplete). We've got great young guys. If Nelson can stay healthy, we should be just as good on the line next year. Our LBers looked better as the season went one and we get back injured guys and our young guys will have another year in the weight room.

Hopefully N. Hines can be a game changer in Special Teams. That was a pretty big hole for us this year. We basically don't lose any skill players (sorry Underwood).

I don't like to get too optimistic...but the future looks bright.

The linebackers definitely improved. Fernandez played so well as a true freshmen. He's going to be a rock back there for the next few seasons. People forget about Salahuddin, who will be back next season too. That unit will get much better. They just need to find somebody for the strong side.

We've got pretty good players at all the starting spots going into next year, we just need to start building that quality depth in the next two recruiting classes where there is competition at every spot and we don't have to rely on guys to play immediately.
