but they at least have a competitive team right now, which is probably enough for their fanbase.
and it's hard to justify gambling on Rivers. they could go from a competitive team to a basement team again very quickly, which is quite a risk.
I think the option to trade Brees is there... but in today's NFL, blockbuster trades are pretty rare. In reality, any team that picks up Brees will lose at least a half season while he gets up to speed on the offense. I think the offer would have to be REAL good to pull the trigger on a trade. 10/6/2005 4:20:51 PM |

Oh i wasnt saying trade Brees now. that would be incredibly stupid, IMO
i think you trade him at the end of the season.
There are like 8 teams out there that could be competitive with a competent QB.
did anyone SEE Antonio Gates last night? I think i could throw for 75 yards a game with that guy catching passes.... he's indefensible at times 10/11/2005 6:32:48 PM |

the only team dumb enough to trade brees at the end of the season, is the same team dumb enough to draft rivers....so he has a shot 10/11/2005 6:34:22 PM |

its not dumb to trade an above average QB who is a free agent to be (and wants ~8 million a year) when you have an above average one backing him up for $6 million a year...
Especially when you are a borderline SUper Bowl contender and could use help in other areas... 10/11/2005 6:39:00 PM |

well yeah thats just my opinion
the Chargers know what they have better than I do in this case...
but with LDT, Gates, and McCardell....
honestly any reaonable QB is going to look pretty good.
They need a game manager not a savior and that should play into Rivers strengths (reading defenses, spreading the ball, quick decisions, short touch passes, etc)
If you're gonna draft Rivers you gotta use him... the salary cap doesnt allow drafting for depth

they couldnt get much for rivers and they end up eating a lot of his salary under their cap space
Rivers is worth more as a backup QB then he'd bring in a trade
you either trade Brees or you keep them both 10/11/2005 6:48:33 PM |

they cant trade brees at the end of the year...hes a free agent...they either keep him or let him go getting nothing in return 10/11/2005 6:49:45 PM |

i doubt he'd (Rivers) would do that because no way he'd command anywhere near $6 million a year as a free agent. Probably a one year deal worth like 1.1 million or something if he pulled that stunt...
And yes they can trade Brees even though he is a free agent. They just tender him another one year contract under the "franchise" tag just like they did last year when he was a free agent. 10/11/2005 6:52:16 PM |

wasn't there an article where he proclaimed that he WAS going to be a starter next year whether it was for San Diego or elsewhere 10/26/2005 10:31:55 AM |

Quote : | "I believe the Chargers are going to deal Drew Brees after the season. San Diego essentially took Philip Rivers with the No. 1 overall pick last year, meaning they viewed him as a franchise quarterback, on the same level as Eli Manning. You don't draft a franchise quarterback so he can lead another franchise.
There was no way the Chargers could hand things over to Rivers after Brees led them to a 12-4 mark last year, not with how few and far between victories had been in San Diego. From management's standpoint, it will be a lot easier to hand things over to Rivers and perhaps take a small step backward after a culture of winning has been created. Brees continues to play well, but, barring a Super Bowl appearance, he's not long for the Chargers' world, perhaps even then. Just my take." |

^^Yes. But that's not really up to him.
And at this point, with the Chargers not looking like an AFC championship team this year, I think Phil's chances at taking over are pretty good.
I would love to see Phil leading that offense with LT at tailback. 11/7/2005 11:30:37 AM |

yeah i really want him to be the starter in SD. with antonio gates, keenan mccardell, and LT, he'd easily come in and win games. eventually i think he would turn into an offensive threat instead of someone that manages the offense like brees is doing. 11/7/2005 12:00:20 PM |
