Without having to look into it, can somebody tell me if Mike Allred is working on something, or if the Savage Dragon is still in print? 6/15/2006 10:25:20 AM |

Savage Dragon is still in print. His origin story from The Image Comics Hardcover or whatever is being reprinted as a standalone #0 in August.
Allred just wrapped up the X-Statix: Dead Girl limited series. I don't know what else he's working on now or what's in the works.

He does a ton of non-comics work.
I haven't followed X-Statix or anything. All I know is that his cover art catches my eye on the stands, but the only Marvel mutant title worth reading right now is X-Factor. 6/15/2006 10:42:18 AM |

oh it's marvel mutant stuff? meh.
What about Daniel Clowes? Anything new?
I'm sick of the cover art crap; Allred is a good writer, also. But as far as I know he's always pulled the cover art stuff such as say, Alex Ross or something... 6/15/2006 10:47:52 AM |

I don't know anything about Clowes except Ghost World, really. There may have been another printing of Art School Confidential to coincide with the movie, but that's come and gone, hasn't it? 6/15/2006 10:54:10 AM |

I still need to see that. I heard it wasn't that great (sans Zwigoff's small but steady track record). Clowes did the Eight Ball series a long time ago, and "Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron;" both of which I enjoyed... 6/15/2006 10:55:57 AM |

I liked how it started, but then it just kinda died. Astonishing X-Men is way better and I'm excited about Brubaker's upcoming run on Uncanny whenever it starts.6/15/2006 11:23:59 AM |

The short version: Comics tell stories that are typically episodic. Episodic stories are suited to television. In television, the money lies in advertising. A TV series based on a limited series like Watchmen offers limited advertising opportunities. It's more profitable to build up a big blockbuster with wide appeal for licenses like Watchmen, and TV is more suited to continuing series based on licenses like Flash and Batman, which mean more commercial airtime. That is why limited series get butchered and stuffed into a 90-minute movie rather than being faithfully translated into television episodes.
The long version: Coming later tonight at Second Issue!

I think one of the major problems here is that no one knows what they're buying. There are some major studios in a bidding war over a 4-issue limited series that hasn't even finished its run yet. They buy up the rights and then realize they have to "movie it up" or people won't watch them.
Sometimes it doesn't work so badly(I enjoyed V for Vendetta for what it was, for example).
Sometimes it sucks(League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, anyone?).
There's an even bigger problem with the more well-known properties like a Spider-Man or a Batman because there are so many writers over so much history with so many different takes on the character. You can't fit it all into a movie. So you get what the directors and writers think are the good bits.
You want a true Phoenix-themed X-Men movie, but no one is going to go to a theater to watch a movie that goes in depth about the Shi'ar Empire and the M'Krann Crystal. They will go watch a movie that focuses on Wolverine, though. They've heard of that.
That was rambling...6/15/2006 12:11:27 PM |

My boyfriend (that's Estrada to you, Frosh) has recently taken up the comic hobby (he was into it in the late elementary/middle/ some high school days, but weren't all boys?) and has accumulated a decent amount of random superhero menagerie in the living room. He's into '52' (possibly only for collection purposes) and seems to really like the 'Civil War' stuff. Like I said, he buys some random shit, and yesterday I couldn't help but take notice of 'Mouse Guard -- Shadows Within'
which looks utterly ridiculous but was admittedly entertaining. The artwork is nice and apparently it's somewhat hard to get your hands on. Wondered if anyone had any thoughts about this one.
Also, I thought Zatanna was fairly interesting
anyway, not the standard comics you guys are arguing about, but I was wondering if anyone had any opinions regarding these two just the same. 6/15/2006 1:19:57 PM |

Tyler's got good taste, April. Mouse Guard is a book I should be buying based on flipping through someone else's copy of issue 3 yesterday. And Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers of Victory stuff is supposed to be really, really good. I wasn't all that impressed with the Mr. Miracle limited series, but I haven't read the other books either, and as I understand it they work better as a whole. I'm totally intrigued by the Zatanna series, love that character (especially her appearances in Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, and The Books of Magic), but I just haven't gotten off my ass and bought the back issues. 6/15/2006 2:44:34 PM |

Quote : | "Marvel Comics at Center of Superhero Controversy
Marvel comics has come under fire from superhero fans for unmasking one of their stars at a fictional press conference. Enduring crusader Spider-Man unexpectedly takes off his mask in front of awaiting reporters and snappers at a Washington publicity call in Marvel's latest edition, revealing the identity he has battled to keep secret for 44 years. Peter Parker agrees to the unmasking after federal legislation requires super heroes register and reveal their identities in a crackdown inspired by the deaths of hundreds of children at an elementary school when a battle between heroes and villains spills onto their grounds. But Marvel's editor-in-chief Joe Quesada reassured disgruntled fans on Wednesday that the unprecedented move is a positive step for the comic adventures. He said, "It is arguably the most shocking event in comic book history. It can be very intimidating if you don't know where the story is going or how it ends; we do, so we're just excited about where it takes us and the story possibilities it offers." " |

See, I'm not so pissed because I thought that the motivation given in ASM was pretty right-on, in terms of the character. I think it can lend itself to some pretty sweet Spider-Man stories once the big, fat crossover wraps up.
Probably not as soon as one year, but I'm thinking 5-10 years down the line the whole thing will get retconned whether it worked or not.
I mostly wonder if more heroes are going to "out" themselves and whether or not that will steal any thunder from how fucking awesome Bendis' run on Daredevil was. 6/16/2006 12:47:18 PM |

go up to capital comics off glenwood for at least those superman issues i know for a fact he has a shitload of each of them (a whole box dedicated to the jim lee ones) also, you may have some luck with the batman and omac there. if some of it seems overpriced, look at the date it was tagged too. you can always ask and they may change it to whatever current value in wizard is. 6/16/2006 8:24:17 PM |
