^For #3 make sure the numbers are in order i kept putting them in backwards like -4.185 before -4.415. So becarful about that.

^ I am in that too. Its a good class. For being a MW class it doesnt drag on and on. He is a great guy with tons of stories! You need to study for the tests but its a great class and he is an even better professor.

Bump. It got too low on the list, and I still want people to know how terrible he is. Also I talked to the department head of statistics, and basically he said that Reich's class had been reviewed and the reviewing professor said he was a good teacher. So, that being said I asked if there was anything else that could be done. The reply: No. He said that the best alternative options were to either A) try to learn the material from your T.A. or, B) get a tutor. Sorry I couldn't have been of more help.

Ok, so the reviewer didn't seem to think that Reich's horrible habit of starting off a point strong and mumbling near the end so that we can't hear a word of his explanation was ok?

Or that Reich's total ramblings onto other subjects that (after 10 min of rambling about different formulas) he states that we don't need to know is ok?

Or the fact that my T.A. BARELY speaks english and couldn't even respond to my question of "do you have the corrected tests" without me having to ask it FOUR times (yes, four...the class was laughing because after the third time he ignored me and pretended he hadn't heard my question the previous 2 times) is ok? I mean nevermind when I try to ask him HOW to do a problem, or WHY it's done that way he looks at me like i have two heads and says "yes, uh, yes....problem right"


I mean, how long did the reviewer sit in? 45 seconds?

^ You shouldn't be surprised. From a head-honcho point-of-view, Reich is fine. From someone w/ a Ph.D, Reich is fine. The problem is the management that hired him (you must remember hiring a new teacher (and escp. firing one) takes A LOT of money...NCSU won't hire/fire anyone that they don't absolutely have to) won't fire him unless he's doing something very wrong.

The reality is he's presenting us with valid material, he's just a horrible teacher for an intro-level course. He could teach 500-level statistics courses with the best of 'em. He also has a very strange obsession with theory and refusing to teach us how to calculate things on our calculator. If I were in ST 512, I'd wanna know theory. I'm in this because I have to be, and I want to know the basics and how to do them on a calculator or Excel, considering I'll have both of those readily available in my career.

He won't get fired, it's sad but true. He's giving us the right material, he's just a horrible presenter from a student's perspective. If you were a head of the department, you'd see things differently. First, you wouldn't wanna admit your mistake. Second, you'd see him a "smart, young man" that knows his stuff. What you wouldn't see is how the student views him. Another typical example of top management not understanding the client's viewpoint.

If this university was a real-world "business", it wouldn't last a year with the way it treats its "customers". Thank god at least one business course taken here has instilled in me the knowledge that if firms don't listen to their customers wants, soon they won't have any.

As hoped for, WebAssign #8 Help:

Problem #1: This is exactly like the example given on the 10/31/05 slides using the election proportion data. Not too difficult. Especially with a TI-83. If you don't have one, just use the exact formula on the fifth slide of his 10/31 slides. If you do, here goes. Go to STAT, Tests, and go all the way down to "B", which is the "2-PropZInt..."

Enter your data...be careful here. x1 is the first group who said "yes", and n1 is the amount of folks that had fewer than 2 bags. x2 is the 2nd group who said "yes", and n2 is (1000-n1). Since our n and x's are different, that's about as exact as I can get. Also, make sure the C-Level is set for: .95, and hit calculate. There's your interval!! For the text box, you're supposed to be surprised that so few people wanted less than 2 bags I guess...just write something

Problem #2:
a) Real simple. Just x1/n1. Mine was 111/200 = .555

b) Simpler. Just x2/n2. Mine was 40/100 = .40

c) This can't be easily calculated via TI-83, so use the formula given on the 10/31 slides to find p-bar.

Basically it's: p-bar = [n1(p-hat1) + n2(p-hat2)]/n1 + n2

d) For this, do the same thing you did on your TI-83 to find that 95% C.I. using the new data presented to you in this problem. It'll spit out your interval, just put it into WebAssign.

e) Use your TI-83 here. If you wanna do it by hand, just use the formula given to find the z-test statistic on the 10/31 slides. On your TI-83, go to STATS, Tests, and punch "6". This is the "2-PropZTest..."

Enter your information and make sure p1 is set to: "=/p2" Then hit calculate.
There's your z-test statistic.

f) Keeping looking at the screen of your TI-83. Just below the "z" is a "p". There's your p-value. However, WebAssign is screwy on this one...ONLY ENTER 3 digits after the decimal. For example, if you see ".01136748", only enter into WebAssign ".011" It'll count anything else wrong I guess, b/c it counted ".0114" wrong.

Problem #3:
a) He explained in class today how to get the "missing fields" in that ANOVA table. Not hard once you grasp it. The table provided above by ActofGod (thanks!!) helps a ton: http://www.georgetown.edu/departments/psychology/researchmethods/statistics/inferential/anova.htm#onewaycalculation

Just to get you started, SSw = SSt - SSb (Just take your total minus your "between" and you've now got the SS "within". That website tells you the rest

b) How many factor levels? It's just your DFbetween + 1, since that number you filled in there is (k-1), your k can obviously be found by working backwards and just adding one to whatever number you filled in there.

c) The DFwithin stands for (N-k). Since you already filled that number in and you know your "k" is (whatever you found in answer b), then just add that k-value to DFwithin. Mine was 30 + 6 = 36, and 6 was the answer for "b)"

d) You're supposed to compare F-values in order to see if it's less than .05
But just enter a 1 or a 0, and since you've got 2 possible answers and 3 submissions, I highly doubt you'd get it wrong

Problem #4:
a) This requires you to look at the 11/2/05 slides. He gives an example of finding the expected values on slide 5. This problem works the same way...just setup a table and do the math for each block.

b) Alright, go to your TI-83. Hit "2nd" followed by the "x^-1" key to bring up your matrixes. Edit matrix A to be a 2x2 table and enter your GIVEN values. Now edit Matrix B and enter those EXPECTED values you just found. Then quit outta that.

Now hit STAT, Tests, and go all the way down to "x^2-Test..." Make sure your Observed is "A" and Expected is "B", and hit calculate. It'll give ya the chi-squared (x^2) value. Enter that into WebAssign and you're golden.

c) Again, you're supposed to look this number up on the chi-squared chart in the back of your book and compare for rejection or not. Just hit 0 or 1 'til ya get it right

So for the webassign, question four, I'm having trouble getting the expected values right. I'm following just what he did in the notes, and I got the part right where you multiple the matrixes together.

I multiple 308* (69/308)*(55/308) ect and it's not working...any suggestions?

^ Just remeber to multiply the decimal you get by the total # of days, and then ROUND to the nearest WHOLE NUMBER. If you get 24.3, put 24.

If you get 28.7, put 29.

hey,
I've been having some problem with HW #8

For problem 4.....i cant figure out wht i m doing wrong.
I have this soo far for the table

It marked 12 and 15.18 wrong...havent tried the rest yet.

Please help me figure this out.
I cannot compute X2 unless i get this table right....

^those are the exact answers i got, i tried putting them with decimals, it marked them wrong. someone on here then told me to round to a whole number and i did, it still says they're wrong. i got the question right where you multiple the matrixes together even.

^^ No no, you guys are forgetting half of the mutiplication. Not only do you hafta multiply how many yes outta the total or yes or no's, but you ALSO hafta take into consideration how many domestic outta the total, for example.

Pay close attention in the slides; you multiply 2 things, then divide by the total, then round. Yall are only multiplying one factor of it.
