Yeah I thought about that, or Tombstone, Electro, etc.

I'm pretty sure that will be it.

The CGI in the trailer looks pretty good. I just hope they develop everything. Gwen Stacy, wtf is she doing in here now?

I'm glad to hear that venom will either not be inthis film or have a small role. Comic book movies start on the path to suckage when they start throwing in multiple villains. Sandman is enough even though I think he is lame. I guess Harry may count as a second villain but as long as the focus remains on sandman the movie should eb ok

they should have said screw sandman and introduced venom in this movie...

but noooo...Raimi has said numerous times that he is not a fan of venom...which is stupid (to me)...b/c everyone i talk to is about to die to have venom in a spiderman movie

You haven't talked to me.

Venom is straight-up the second worst comic book character ever. Just behind Carnage. I hate the 90's.

The idea of Venom is great--that he's two creatures that hate spider-man in one entity. He's just used in a lot of bad stories. Also, it's easy to concieve a character who's the dark version of the hero (which at least isn't as stupid as making a female version of a good male character). That might be why some people don't like him. But I would guess it's probably also because of his overexposure and that he was used in so many bad stories. One thing that irritates me about Venom is that a lot of people seem to think that he's Spider-Man's only interesting villain. The biggest change that I can think of that Venom catalyzes in Spider-Man's life though, is that he is the reason Spider-Man permanently retired his black costume. The Green Goblins on the other hand have completely raped his life and redirected its course (killing his girlfriend, bringing back his dead parents, betraying his frienship, partaking in all that clone...stuff, stealing their baby, faking Aunt May's death, etc.). From that perspective the Goblins are a lot more interesting than some beefed up stalker that mimics the hero's powers. Not that that doesn't have its own appeal...

Venom was a semi-interesting concept at first, right up until he was defeated the first time by making the symbiote exhaust itself making webs. That was lame.

From there, they tried to give him some kind of since of honor so he could be the hero in his book but still a villain in the Spidey books. When that ran out, they made Carnage...the most two dimensional character in comic book history. And I'm including this guy:

Yeah. I've always supported that opinion. The way he got beat there made absolutely no sense. Why didn't the jackass just web to somewhere that spider-man wasn't at so he wouldn't break his web?

And I was going to say something about carnage being a totally one-dimensional character in my other post, but I didn't really want to get into that. I think that the point of him is to just be a really simple-minded psychopath to fill some kind of niche in spider-man's rogues gallery. You know...like...how the ramones are sort of dumb, but that's the point? He's a pure pulp villain. Carnage is like the terminator in that you can't reason with him, ever, no matter what--he just kills because he can or, if you wanted to press the metaphor, is (psychologically) programmed to (by nature). It's supposed to make him scary and stuff. But I can see why some people wouldn't be into that. I mean...I don't like the ramones, so...

Damn, Gwen with Peter, Mary Jane with Peter, Mary Jane with Harry, AND Eddie Brock. Sounds like we're looking at another 2 hours of dialogue and ten minutes of action.

There is no good way to handle Venom. Not so long as "symbiote from outer space" remains a part of the character.

Which would still be a symbiote from outer space.

P.S. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the cartoon have the symbiote coming back to Earth aboard John Jameson's shuttle? You know, John Jameson, the fucking Man-Wolf? Cursed by a gemstone discovered on the lunar surface which transforms its bearer into a mindless lupine beast by the light of the full moon?

P.P.S. What's with that, Marvel? You send a guy into outer space and he gets the power to turn into a fucking wolf from a fucking rock? Did you blow your entire origins-based-in-space creative wad on the Fantastic Four?

I really liked the way they did Venom in the cartoon. In retrospect though, I don't like that Eddie was a photograher instead of a writer like in the comics. The guy's already got enough parallels with Spider-Man, what with having most of his powers and all.

Yeah. If Man-Wolf was ever in the cartoon though, I never saw it. Where I lived, Fox stopped showing Spider-Man after the second season. It got replaced with some kind of wholesome Christian programming. Saturday mornings were never the same again.

^Spiderman's costume was destroyed in battle during Secret Wars. ( like in 1985 or 1986). On the Beyonder planet there was a machine that could replictae costumes for the heroes, or so they thought. Spiderman wore the black costume for the first time in Secret Wars because his red and blue suit was shreded. I read those issues when they came out so it has been a long time but i pretty sure that was right.

^ Spider Man thought that he was using the devise that produced new costumes. Instead he unleashed some sort of containment devise housing an alien symbiote. At the time he figured the "costume machine" made some improvements to his costume on its own. Later in Web of Spider-Man #1 the costume tried to bond with Parker. Somehow he managed to get himself into a bell tower. The costume was weakened and Peter Parker was almost dead from exhaustion when the giant bells started to ring. For some reason the sybiote took pity on Parker and risked it's own existance to pull him to safety.

After the symbiote was taken care of at the bell tower, he kept wearing a non-evil/sentient version of the costume until Venom terrorized MJ pretty bad. Since the black costume reminded MJ of a particularly bad night, it was back to the classic Spidey costume.

They mention Bruce Campbell making a cameo. So, we could be seeing Mysterio afterall.

Tobey says that their could be more sequels.

my brother has been in CA for the past week at a comic convention and he said that he actually got to see Venom and the extended trailer with him in it which was bad ass...I'm jealous

also:

- Topher Grace grew up a huge fan of the SPIDER-MAN books and in particular loves the McFarlane era Venom. He likes that Eddie is Peter's doppelganger even before the whole Venom/Spidey "two different sides of the same coin" relationship comes in.

- Topher let something go... Venom won't be completely CGI. He said it took him 45 minutes just to get into his suit and 4 1/2 hours in make-up, he said. Very interesting, says I.

- Why Venom, after Raimi has said he doesn't care for the character? He said Avi Arad brought it up, saying this is the 3rd film and, pretty much, Raimi shouldn't be greedy. So, Raimi consented for the fans, but said that after seeing what Alvin Sargent did with him in the script he started to really take to the character. Then when he saw what Topher Grace brought to it, he fell in love with the character. "I may be the latest and last Venom fan..."
