for one thing, Frasier was just another idiot from Boston.
and no one in seattle watched that stupid show. it was like what people in new york *thought* seattle was (or should be) like.
for one thing people in seattle dont sit around in posh downtown apartmnets all day whining about stupid shit.
we go mountain hiking or sea kayaking or drinking at local music venues. or all of the above. all in the same day. 6/11/2006 3:21:08 AM |

its a (dormant) volcano. its about 100 miles away. normally you dont see it so clearly. i think the film was overexposed or something.

and see at that ice on top of that volcano? when it erupts, that shit is going to melt, mix with ash and other debris, and come barrel-assing down the slopes and hit the river channels and could possibly devastate seattle. 6/11/2006 3:31:43 AM |

yeah thats totally not like seattle
if frasier were really from there he'd sit in traffic for 2 hours in the rain before grabbing a 15 dollar coffee on the way up to watch the clock in his cubicle until 5 when he gets to sit in traffic for another 2 hours, still raining, before making it home just in time for a bit of buttsex with his life partner, robb 6/11/2006 3:32:14 AM |

yeah, when it erupts, we're gonna hate it. but the torrents -- called Lahars -- would actually take out Tacoma. which would suck for us because all the Tacoma refugees would then flood Seattle making the traffic even that much worse.
and also, people from Tacoma all have mullets and shit, with a level of education similar to that found in Clayton or Smithfield, NC

well, that's actually pretty close to the truth... for Microsoft employees. if you live and work in seattle the traffic isnt bad.
however, buttsex is buttsex, no matter what city you live in.
whats cool is that we went hiking today, about 1 1/2 hours out of seattle. drove through all these backwoods redneck areas. every damn podunk town we drove through had 3 main necessities: tobacco, beer, and espresso. even in the middle of nowhere, on the side of the road, you had a drivethru espresso kiosk.

All 3 of those are incredibly shitty skylines compared to a real city..
But who cares? A good skyline doesn't make a city...
I like this skyline far better then Charlotte but the city is shit to me.. Louisville

I think most would agree that Charlotte has a better skyline than Louisville. Louisville has the riverfront, which would be a big advantage, but there are less and smaller buildings.
In other news, to humor the people calling me lazy, I measured the distance from the brickyard to Glenwood South. It's 1.5 miles, just to Glenwood South. That means 3 miles round-trip. It's bikable, but not walkable.
If you want to go to Fayetteville Street, it's a little over 2 miles. This is also bikable, but not walkable.
If you want to go to the Progress Energy Center or Lincoln Theatre, it's 2.5 miles.
What we get is something that's much easier to drive to than walk to. Yes, I'm aware it's a 5-minute drive there and back, tops. I was remarking that ideally, we would be able to walk it in 5 minutes, as opposed to having to drive. 6/11/2006 12:15:54 PM |

Take the rock from North Raleigh to build the mountain in Cary. Boom, instant canyon! The Crabtree Creek would run through it, creating waterfalls.

1.5 miles is a 25 min walk. How the fuck is that not walkable? Not to mention you have already said every location mentioned was bikeable, so why not ride your bike?
NCSU is extremely close to downtown. It's closer to downtown than GT is to downtown Atlanta. And it's sure as hell a lot safer to bike around here than in Atl or Boston or NYC.6/11/2006 4:46:28 PM |

Quote : | "There are mounds of misconceptions in this thread.
As for Pittsburgh, there is one steel mill left there. The steel industry collapsed in the 1970's. Within Pittsburgh's 55 square miles of city defined land area, there used to be over 600,000 residents at its peak. Today there are 320,000. However, Pittsburgh's metro population, which is a better representation of city cize, is over 2.3 million (down from 2.6 million in 1970).
As for startups, Pittsburgh has them, but not to the tune that Raleigh does. Regional population growth and loss have a lot to do with it. Obviously, Raleigh's population has exploded within the last 20 years." |
you didn't answer why industries are coming to the triangle and not to a place like pittsburgh. The reason that the population has exploded in raleigh since the early 90's is because there are available jobs here. All these companies aren't moving here necessarily because of the growing population. They are moving here because of things like cheaper tax's lower cost of living, and a readily available skilled workforce from the area colleges.

What do you walk, like a 30 minute mile?
Shit, 5 minutes? It takes that long just to walk from the dorms on west campus to class. Campus could be in the middle of downtown and it would still take you longer than 5 minutes during the day due to traffic and such.

yeah, you can tell from the oakland bay bridge and the triangular-ish building.
i was just in that area last week. it is an amazing city. very beautiful. but most of that has to do with the hills and the water. no amount of city planning can move your city to a bay.

NYC apartment prices are so high for the same reason that SF prices are so high: because there is no where else to go. How about you do a median home comparison of DT Raleigh and Cary? I bet that Cary is higher. It doesn't have to do with density, it has to do with demand.
Car lease: $400/mo. Gas: $450/mo. Insurance: $100/mo. = $950/mo. Monthly Metrocard: $74/mo.6/13/2006 12:13:37 PM |

In a big city, everyone constantly talks about the city itself. Almost no one in Raleigh talks about Raleigh on a daily basis. It's just another issue that is painfully revisited from time to time like global warming. 6/13/2006 4:35:51 PM |
