I'm glad this issue has staying power. Its still in the tech alot, and meetings continue as well. I know movement forward is the best, but not falling out of the public eye is a significant step.

If they did . . . hopefully this will get the ball rolling for another roundabout. The intersection by Amore's desperately needs one. If we got those two . . . I would be mostly satisfied.

FYI I wrote a business proposal for this in 2002, and our group farmed it out around the university. This isn't a new idea, and people within the University have been working for years to make it happen. The move to adding Wachovia based accounts to the All-Campus cards was a huge step in making the whole thing a reality, but it's still a ways away.

Looks like one-way north in Sarijoul's picture. There appears to be a pedestrian island in the middle of Hillsb St at that point, so no one could turn left off Oberlin onto Hillsb. Additionally, the merge from that section of Oberlin into the roundabout appears to direct traffic from northbound into the roundabout in the right direction (right as in starboard).

Weatherman exchanges a look and a smile with Karen Weatherman, his co-owner and wife of 42 years. "Actually," Toney says, "since 1945." "Wow," the customer says. "Really?" "Really," Karen says. "Only job I've ever had." In the midst of Raleigh's high-dollar building boom, with condos and skyscrapers springing up on every corner, you hear a lot of talk about the city's "soul" -- whether it can survive, or whether the city even had one to begin with. Regarding the latter question, no one who has ever spent any time inside Weatherman's modest storefront at 1908 Hillsborough St. would say that Raleigh has no soul to lose. Weatherman Jewelers is literally a mom-and-pop business, one of the few left in Raleigh. Toney and Karen are the second generation to own the store, which has been in the same building across from and east of the N.C. State University bell tower for 62 years. It's a lovely place to stop by to get your watch fixed, or to buy silver furnishings, or to pick up a piece of fine jewelry for a loved one (or yourself). But turn your cell phone off. And if you're in a hurry, you should probably stick with the mall store. The Weathermans are proud parents and even prouder grandparents, so you'll hear about their kids and granddaughter. They'll want to hear about yours, too. A photo album or two will get pulled out, and if you're there around lunchtime you might find yourself running an errand for them -- bringing back some bagels, if it's on your way. And you won't mind a bit. "Small family businesses like this really are a thing of the past," says Weatherman's regular Amanda Long Ramseur. "There's a different feel. Walk in and you feel like you're a part of their family, too." A family business Despite all the clocks on the wall, Weatherman's is a place where time seems to stand still. The store has changed little since Toney's father, Woodrow, opened it the year World War II ended. Back when the year 2000 was approaching, friends asked Karen if she was worried about their computer having "Y2K" problems. She didn't think so, Karen said, because the store didn't have a computer. Seven and a half years later, Weatherman's still doesn't have a computer (or a Web site). Toney and Karen do things pretty much the same as they always have. He handles repairs, she takes care of sales. But Toney is 65, and he had a heart attack on Valentine's Day five years ago. He and Karen would like to travel more, and to spend more time at their cabin on Beech Mountain. There's also their granddaughter, 2-year-old Amie (who, thanks to Grandma, will someday own enough jewelry to outfit a palace full of princesses). The Weathermans inherited the store when Toney's father died in 1985. But passing it along to another generation is not an option. Their son, Woody, is an accomplished clock repairman -- and an even more accomplished guitarist in Corrosion of Conformity, a Grammy-nominated metal band. Daughter Allison has her own career as a long-term-care specialist at Mayview Convalescent Center."

Once a shopping center When Weatherman Jewelers opened in 1945, it was actually a few doors east in the same building. The current space, where it moved in 1983 to make way for Darryl's, was originally a pool hall. "Minnesota Fats and Willie Moscone played exhibitions right here," Toney says, standing just inside the door. "The best table was in front." Weatherman's predates North Hills Mall and Crabtree Valley Mall by decades, and even Cameron Village by four years. Fewer than 60,000 people lived in Raleigh in the mid-1940s, and this block of Hillsborough was the closest thing to a shopping center in the area. It was called College Court, with a clothing store, pharmacy and Piggly Wiggly grocery alongside Weatherman's and the pool hall. "Hillsborough Street used to be U.S. 1, so all kinds of people would go by," Toney says. "As a kid, I remember President Eisenhower riding by in an open car to give a speech at Riddick Stadium on campus. And in about 1967, these Hare Krishnas came in and asked for a silver chalice. They wanted to know if we were [underground '60s activists] The Weathermen. No, that's just our name." Walking their dog, Mae, outside the store, Toney points out landmarks in the vicinity -- where former Mayor Fred Wheeler used to live up the street, the gray house where the Weatherman family lived during a few of his wonder years (it's now Sam & Bill's hair salon), the spot that used to have an old house they all thought was haunted. Behind the counter inside, Weatherman's feels like a combination antiques store, local history museum and family archive. Twenty-year-old posters for Corrosion of Conformity gigs cover the walls, alongside vintage cuckoo clocks and neon signs. The shelves are packed with boxes full of treasure untold. "I was down here for six hours on Sunday, going through stuff," Karen says. "It was like an archaeological dig. The further down I got, the more interesting it was." Recent items to turn up include a set of 1960s-vintage private-club pins from Broughton High School, Woody's old comic book collection, a couple of ancient clay jugs owned by Toney's grandmother and political buttons going all the way back to FDR's "New Deal" era. On a wall just outside the office door, pencil marks track the heights of various children and godchildren (all now grown). Nearby hang some Mardi Gras beads a customer from New Orleans gave Toney on a long-ago Fat Tuesday. Also hanging on the wall is a 1947 Raleigh phone book. The Weatherman residence didn't have a phone back then (and they're unlisted now because they got tired of kids calling them early in the morning on snowy days to ask if school was out). But the jewelry store was in the book, phone number 3-3232. It's about the size of a pamphlet and the thickness of a magazine. Listings for the town of Cary take up less than two pages."

But when it came time for Woody to get an instrument of his own, he wanted an electric guitar. That led to his career in Corrosion of Conformity, a band that is legendary in heavy-metal circles -- you still see COC's distinctive spiked-skull logo all over. COC invented thrash metal by combining Black Flag's punk with Black Sabbath's heaviness, playing songs with titles like "Vote With a Bullet" and "Heaven's Not Overflowing." It's a sound and sensibility as far removed as you can imagine from the music that Toney plays. And Woody's parents could not be prouder. Look for a black Chevy Suburban with COC bumper stickers and a Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation license plate, and you'll probably see Toney Weatherman driving it. "Toney and Karen have always embraced people of every stripe," says their longtime friend Joe Newberry. "Everybody is welcome in their lives. When Woody was starting COC in their basement, that might have thrown some parents, but not them. When COC was out opening shows for Metallica, Karen and Toney would go backstage like it was nothin'. And I'm sure if [Metallica's] James Hetfield screamed himself to the point of tears in his eyes, Karen would've taken him a tissue and said, 'C'mere, you.' They really are the warmest, most genuine, generous people I've ever known." Some years ago, on Newberry's wedding day, his bride was getting dressed for the ceremony when there came a knock at the door. It was Karen Weatherman: "Your groom has a present for you." The gift was a beautiful antique bracelet that fit just right and matched her bridal gown perfectly. Later, Newberry saw it and remarked, "That's a pretty bracelet. Where'd you get it?" Thus was born the Newberry family's nickname for Karen: "The Jewelry Elf," who keeps husbands out of hot water. She performs a similar role in other households. "We're personal jewelers to about 120 people, and most of our other business is just word-of-mouth referrals," Karen says. "There have been weeks in the past in July or August where we were making next to nothing, and I wondered if we'd be going to the poorhouse. But then you have mornings like this one." She holds up a check a customer just wrote to pay for a veritable carload of jewelry -- $4,695 -- and laughs. "It's been busy ever since November, when we started telling people we're retiring," Karen says. "People stocking up, I guess. I once told Toney that I wished we were rich. He said we are rich, and we are in friends and family, and we'll never go hungry. And that's enough." More than customers Weatherman's customers are an eclectic lot. A typical afternoon will see everybody from the wife of a state Supreme Court justice to a guy living in his van up the street, all coming in to buy, sell, appraise, fix or just chat. The week of Valentine's Day is especially busy, since it's the last big jewelry-shopping holiday before the store closes. Few of the store's regulars leave empty-handed, whether they came in planning to or not."

She discovered the store a few months back while looking for a friend's wedding ring. "They had the perfect ring here, and it was only $40," she says. "Then I found out they're closing, and I must've bought half the store. Took me five trips to get everything out to the car; there was barely room for the dog." But soon, Eure will have to go elsewhere. Or maybe not. Karen says she'll try to keep getting jewelry for her regulars at shows. And one way or another, the Weathermans probably won't be seeing the last of their customers on May 18. "I'm just tore up about them leaving," Eure says. Then she calls out to Toney in the back: "I want to know where you live so I can bring my broken things. Now that I've found you, I'm not letting you go. You can retire if you want, I'm still coming to find you!""

Wow...sad

I guess I understand why they're closing, but it sucks to lose a business that's been around since 1945. Interesting to hear what used to be in that building though...a Piggly Wiggly...wow. With the building completely vacant I fear it will be that much easier for someone to tear it down though. I guess the alternate view is that it's a blank canvas for someone coming in with a vision to renovate...but I've learned to be pessimistic on matters like this one.

seriously, i'd guestimate that the wolfline would carry many more students then they CAT bus does, simply because students are used to riding the wolfline, and taking the CAT bus doesn't even occur to them.
