i have one screw in my right leg, and the left leg will have 5 screws and a rod. they are using live bone to make the repair harvested from my hip/pelvis as i mentioned earlier.2/23/2007 9:53:49 AM |

surgery cancelled for tomorrow.
the cultures have grown a little more, and the orthopedic doctors don't want to procede until they have a big pow wow with the infectious disease doctors and they all figure out what exactly is going on.
in the meantime, i'm back on heavy ant biotics through my iv. 2/25/2007 10:15:01 PM |

no, we must keep it on a wheelchair chassis. how cool would it be going into handicapped accessible areas such as malls or hospitals on a 100hp wheelie machine chair that could take you from 0-60 in 3 seconds? :p 2/26/2007 2:46:42 PM |

i wish. the recovery has been pretty miraculous so far, but i've still got a ways to go.
i was only doing pt to increase ankle movement to avoid a tendon extension. the "real" pt will start in a few weeks. 2/26/2007 3:23:40 PM |

okay, back on for wednesday. doctors identified that the infection is still psudomonas, though much weaker than it was months ago which is good.
they decided it was alot more important to go ahead and get the orthopedic stuff taken care of, and worry about the fighting the infection afterwards since it's not a bad case of it and it's still responding to the iv anti biotics. 2/26/2007 9:50:08 PM |

okay, updates: so the bone graft went well. very painful, but sucessfull. finally got out of the hospital this past sunday. 12 days and 2 surgeries this time. that brings a total of 27 days and 8 surguries. hopefully that'll be the final tally.
i'm finally able to start moving around some the past couple of days, the pain in my side from where they took bone has had me pretty confined to bed prior. it was an understatement when they said that this procedure would be painful. it was alot more involved than i think i expected.
they also ended up doing an extension on my achilles tendon anyway. once they went in, they realized things were just to bound up by scar tissue and movement wouldn't get any better than it was without cutting it.
anyway, the best news i've had so far came at the doctor today. just 6 more weeks and i can start trying to walk again. i won't be running around or anything obviously, but i'll be cleared to start putting putting full/normal weight on things which is awesome. hope i remember how after this long, lol.
i've got some new pics of my latest incisions, etc. i'll post up whenever i find my upload cable. 3/8/2007 5:15:34 PM |

^^^lol, i wish. that's what i thought after my first wreck "hey, i've paid my dues, what are the chances of having another big one?". little did i know.
surprisingly, i do still have the urge to ride and still lust after bikes on CL, etc. as a personal decision, i won't ever ride again though as i've said before. i've had my fun for a few years, now it's over. even if i decided to, i've made a promise to my family not to. i owe them at least that after all the help they've given me and what they've been through during all this.

i totally understand that! although my accident wasn't anywhere near as bad as yours or even motorcycle related, it was a definite eye opener since i've seen people die from the say fall i took. i still ride rarely but i'll never own a bike. i've already spent my bike money on a bass boat. falling on water is a lot more forgiving than asphalt. good job on the attitude. a good attitude is a must for a good recovery. another thing, when you start therapy, be sure to do your at-home exercises!3/9/2007 1:44:24 PM |

yeah, keeping a positive attitude has been crucial, and i'd say the hardest part. i can deal with pain, it's some of those endless days laying on your back staring at the ceiling that can get to you. in alot of ways, the mental aspect has been harder than the physical part so far.
i def. plan on doing whatever i have to do with the pt, it will play a pretty big role in the use i get back i think. 3/9/2007 9:41:42 PM |

^actually, probably not much more. i'm on here pretty frequently even during my "normal" life.
couple more pics. these are from the bone graft surgery a few weeks ago.
where they took the bone from on my side:
where they went back into my leg to do the graft:
looks kinda funny to have that nice, neat incision next to the big scar from where it was ripped open.
