"why did nieman play over furgie? i felt like the first 6 minutes of every half when nieman was in killed us. trevor kept steele in check and it slowed them down on offense. nieman should not be starting."

nieman played good D. Ferguson was also playing good D, but if he is in you expect some O too. he had one good drive and dish. I would like to see ferguson getting more minutes but you have to realize that was his first college game EVER. He will eventually be better, but at least giver some props to nieman for being a walk-on and playing some D like he was against one of the best players in the NCAA.

two words.....boston college

been to all of those games, and BC in double OT was the loudest. i couldn't stand up straight after that game from headaches from the noise level.

"3. gavin grant looked like ass"

yawn...same story as last year except for the fact that he was running the point well w/ all his assists and rebounds and lack of turnovers. this was just an example of last year when he couldn't hit shit. although i think this is really just a bad game for him on shooting. every player has a bad game. sidney has really helped him improve his game.

final word on the game

great effort by fells on that nasty dunk, as well as the rest of the game. props to mcnasty for a great game and some sick rebounds. this is the best i have ever felt after losing and it's b/c i see tons of potential, which i NEVER saw in any of herbs teams.

GO PACK and i believe we will win a couple games this year against great teams w/ the way we played tonight. the shots have to fall in our favor eventually

this team WILL be going places in the next 3 yrs. (places aka sweet 16, elite 8, final 4)

[Edited on December 20, 2006 at 11:51 PM. Reason : remember this team is #10 IN THE NATION!!! great effort guys.]

i think if gavin didn't take 5-7 DUMB shots, like his last 3-pt attempt near the end of the game, we would've had a better chance of winning.

Gavin Grant is garbage at the point and if he ever takes 14 shots again in a game he better fucking make 13 of them because he is total ass when he tries to force shit like he did tonight. He's good when he lets the game come to him but jesus christ he was bad tonight. the 10 assists doesnt mean anything when you throw some of the worst passes I've ever seen and take 3 pointers that hardly catch rim. /rant

Costner is the best player on this team though and McCauley is a close second. Those guys can ball.

you people are ridiculous

Herb's team would have straight up won this game just like last season

we only came back because Alabama was sucking it up and we got lucky...if Grant learns not shoot a 3 pointer as he's coming down from his jump it might have been a different game

tonight I left the RBC center missing the likes of Marcus Melvin, Scooter Sherrill, Jordan Collins, Bennerman, Hodge and even Will Roach

We don't have those types of players anymore...the best all around player we have right now is Ben McCauley--he seems to do just about everything he's supposed to do. Fells is lazy and doesn't play defense, Costner needs to spend more time on the perimeter than he does, Grant does NOT need to be shooting 3 pointers.

i'd rather watch a team that knows how to run an offense than a team that doesn't

I like how most of the Herb-haters are happy with a loss, but whatever Lowe is the man.

Alabama is vastly overrated and we just aren't very good. UVA lost to App State for crying out loud. Wofford lost to Elon today. We have played pretty poorly since the Michigan game. But we are without our best player/shooter Engin. Engin also would be playing point and Gavin would be off the ball where he can do his thing. 3 point shooting/shot selection/rebounding is awful right now.

Serious? No really, are you serious?

You honestly think that, with the players we currently put on the court, that Herb would have won this game with the Princeton offense? You think there would have been any fire left in the team at the end of the game?

You're honestly missing Marcus "I'm 6'9 but I think I'll shoot another three" Melvin and Scooter "I was ruined by the Princeton offense" Sherrill?

You honestly think Costner needs to spend more time on the perimeter, even though he's been our best rebounder thus far?

Well I don't. But I do think you're retarded.

Good thing i took Bama -3 on VIPSports.com. I recommend checking out http://propokerbonuses.com, getting some good online sportsbook signup bonuses, and joining me in the world of betting against NC State athletics

Well no shit considering the majority of our team either graduated, went to the NBA, or rethought their commitment to NCSU after Herb left. Give Lowe a few years to start building teams completely of his own recruiting and then we'll see how things go.

Costner used to have a beautiful 3 pt shot bfore he fractured his ankle last season

it's not what it used to b but it's a hell of a lot better than whatever Grant throws up
McCauley even said they didn't even run an offense tonight and that's why the first half was crap

i dont' care what they do or how they do it so long as it's structured. Herb created structure--you guys hated it, but at least there was something. I haven't seen anything that even looks remotely structured this season.

And we still suck at rebounding. Can't blame Herb for that anymore...

charlie posted one of the dumbest posts ive ever seen on this board. (^ not quite as bad as ^*6)

but good game overall, due of course mainly to the comeback. they scrapped and never stopped fightin. although in the first half the team reminded me of one of herb's. seemed apathetic, offense was crap. but they got it together and almost pulled it out. i felt so good after the game tonight. gg boys.

and yes, i too, thought the crowd was terrible. i had courtside seats and it felt like me and my two friends next to me were the only ones making any noise most of the time. but i donno, i couldn't really judge from where i was. i'm not used to sitting that low and all i could really hear was myself. but im definitely disappointed that with all the excitement people seem to be expressing with lowe and our bright future we can't really come close to selling out a game against a top 10 team.

Article from gopack.com

Quote :
"RALEIGH – NC State’s comeback from a 23-point second-half deficit came up one stripped ball and a 3-point basket short Wednesday night against No. 10 Alabama. But the fact that the Wolfpack managed to get within six points of the Crimson Tide in the final 30 seconds of the game gave Sidney Lowe reason to be proud of his team’s ability to fight back.

“I thought our guys didn’t give up,” Lowe said following his team’s 82-75 loss to Alabama Wednesday at the RBC Center in front of 16,456 fans. “That is the main thing. I thought we were actually going to have a chance at it. I was proud of the way we hung in there.”

The Crimson Tide (10-1) was red-hot from the field in the first half, making 56.7 percent of its shots. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack was offensively impatient, intent on forcing up too many bad shots against Alabama's zone defense. State was a meager 41.4 percent from the field in the first half, including only 2 of 11 from 3-point range.

Eventually, the Crimson Tide pushed its lead to 23 points with 8:47 remaining in the second half, before the Wolfpack (7-3) began a lively comeback on the shoulders of sophomore forward Ben McCauley and redshirt freshman forward Brandon Costner, who scored 19 of his career-high 25 points after halftime.

The Wolfpack cut the lead all the way down to six points, and had an opportunity to get closer, until Alabama’s Mykal Riley stripped the ball out of Costner’s hands with about 11 seconds remaining in the game. Had the Wolfpack scored on that possession, things might have gotten interesting in the waning seconds.

“The bottom line is, we dug ourselves too big a hole,” said McCauley, who had 24 points and nine rebounds in the contest. “We showed we can play with teams like Alabama and we can even win, but the fact is, we got down too big, too early and it was an uphill battle the whole way back.

“I feel like if we do what we did in those last few minutes whole game, every game, we should be fine.”

The Wolfpack, which had won its previous seven home games, managed to put pressure on the Crimson Tide in the final six minutes, thanks in part to the defensive play of redshirt freshman guard Trevor Ferguson, who sat out the Wolfpack’s first nine games after transferring in from Pittsburgh mid-way through last season.

The defense forced 17 turnovers, and Costner and McCauley made big shots, allowing the Pack to cut deeper and deeper into Alabama’s lead.

“We stopped playing tentative and started attacking,” said Costner, whose previous career-high was 20 points against Delaware State in the second game of the season. “We started going to the basket and not shooting as many 3s. I was more aggressive in the second half, as we all were. It was just disappointing that we dug ourselves so big of a hole that we couldn’t come out of it.”

Costner’s 25 points led the Wolfpack, followed by McCauley’s 24. Junior Gavin Grant, still playing out of position at point guard, ran the Wolfpack offense and came close to scoring the team’s first triple-double since his old high school teammate, Julius Hodge, pulled off the feat four years ago. Grant had seven points, a career-high tying 10 assists and eight rebounds on the night before fouling out with 27.2 seconds to play.

For the Crimson Tide, Richard Hendrix scored 23 points and Riley had 17.

With senior guard Engin Atsur out for the fifth consecutive game with a hamstring injury, the Wolfpack got a much-needed injection of depth with Ferguson’s arrival. The Palm Harbor, Fla., product entered the game with 10:08 remaining in the first half, to a loud ovation. He contributed three points, four assists and two rebounds. He also added a spark to the Wolfpack defense in the second half that pleased Lowe, who noted that Alabama shot only 34.5 percent in the second half after its sizzling shooting performance in the first half.

“That was all because of defensive pressure, which I think was a direct result of Trevor Ferguson coming in and picking up some pressure on the defensive end,” said Lowe, whose team returns to action Saturday in a noon game at Cincinnati, a game that will be televised on ESPNU. “That ignited us some on the offensive end.”

In the end, the Wolfpack couldn’t complete the comeback, which was a valuable lesson for Costner and his teammates.

“In the beginning of the game, we didn’t play smart,” Costner said. “We didn’t play NC State basketball. We took bad shots, quick shots.

“If we played like we were supposed to play, we wouldn’t have had to come back. But it does show what we are capable of.”

"Courtney Fells is looking forward to returning home to Shannon, Mississippi over Christmas. But he also knows his homecoming will be anything but a holiday treat should NC State (7-2) lose to No. 10 Alabama (9-1) on Wednesday night.

“I’ve been looking forward to this game all season,” said the Wolfpack’s sophomore guard. “I can’t go home with a loss to Alabama. I just can’t do it.”

Having grown up right in the middle of SEC country, where ‘Bama lovers and haters are quite prominent, Fells won’t need any special pep talks from coach Sidney Lowe to get ready for Wednesday’s 6:30 p.m. match-up at the RBC Center.

He can only hope the rest of his teammates are equally as motivated. If they’re not, the Pack could be in for a long night against one of college basketball’s most athletic and talented teams.

“They have strength in their size, their athleticism and their quickness,” Lowe said. “They really play above the rim. There are times when it seems like they just throw it up there to go get it again. They’re a very talented ball club and the record indicates that.”

The only blip on the Tide’s radar screen thus far is a 99-85 defeat at Notre Dame back on December 7. That was Alabama’s first and only true road game on an opponent’s home court this season.

“I think it’s going to be a great challenge for us to go on the road,” said Alabama coach Mark Gottfried. “I think our guys are anxious to go on the road. They want to go on the road and play a very good North Carolina State team. So we’ve got a full plate. I think they’re very, very good, and we need to play well.”

Five of Gottfried’s players are averaging double-figures led by sophomore forward Alonzo Gee’s 15.4 points per game. But ‘Bama is certainly not a one-man show and on any given night, a number of players are capable of going off for big numbers. A week ago, power forward Richard Hendrix exploded for 34 points in a win over Alabama State. On Saturday, it was Jermareo Davidson’s turn to show the way in a 77-64 win over Southern Mississippi. Davidson, a 6-10 senior center, narrowly missed a triple-double with 25 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high nine blocked shots.

The lanky Davidson averages nearly five blocked shots per game.

“If you know he’s a shot-blocker, you’ve got to try him once and try to go right through him and see if he’s going to get it,” Lowe said. “More importantly, you’ve got to try to move those guys around. You can’t try to get into a jumping game with them. You’ve got to move them around and pull him out some on the floor. He’s very explosive, he’s strong and he’s big.”

Both teams have issues at the point guard position. Lowe said on Monday night that Engin Atsur will miss his fourth straight game because of a pulled hamstring. In Atsur’s absence, the Wolfpack has been forced to use small forward Gavin Grant at the point.

Knee and ankle problems of late have limited Bama’s Ron Steele, who was being touted as one of the nation’s top point guards in the preseason. Steele has missed three of Alabama’s last six games and played very little over the weekend.

As of Monday, Gottfried couldn’t predict how much action the 6-3 junior would see on Wednesday.

“I’d like to know sooner than game time” Gottfried said. “We’ll see how he does [Monday] and [Tuesday] in practice. We’ll see if he’s got any bounce in his step. Obviously this is a great intersectional game with North Carolina State. I know he wants to play very, very badly. But I’ll watch him. We’ll evaluate him and hopefully make a decision on Wednesday. I don’t know that we’ll make one prior to Wednesday, but we’ll take a look and see how he does Monday and Tuesday.”

Back-up point guard Brandon Hollinger has offered a steady hand filling in at the point, posting 30 assists compared to only 11 turnovers. Hollinger doesn’t provide as much scoring as does Steele, and at 5-11, his size could present a challenge if he’s matched up with the 6-7 Grant.

“He’s playing very well,” Gottfried said of Grant. “He poses a lot of match-up problems for teams because of his size. They’ve posted him up inside which makes him dangerous there. There’s no question they’ve taken advantage of what he can bring to the table and they’ve utilized him.”

Grant’s average of 16.6 points per game leads five double-figure scorers for NC State. Redshirt freshman Brandon Costner (15.2), sophomore center Ben McCauley (14.2) and Fells (11.7) have been putting up solid numbers while also logging a lot of minutes.

Even though Atsur will not be available on Wednesday, the Wolfpack will have the luxury of stretching its rotation to seven players since Pittsburgh transfer Trevor Ferguson will be eligible to play for the fist time after sitting out for a year.

“Obviously, he gives us another guy in the backcourt where we have Courtney and Gavin, who are playing a lot of minutes,” Lowe said. “He gives us another shooter on the floor, so if he’s coming in for Courtney, he’s a guy who can knock down some shots for us. He hasn’t played in a long time and what we’ve really talked about is being patient and allowing the game to come to him. When you haven’t played for a long time and you get that opportunity, you’re going to be anxious and eager to go out and get it done right away. We just tell him not to force shots and get his shots from the offense.”

Alabama is outrebounding its opponents by more than eight per game and is fully capable of hammering teams on the offensive glass, something that has Lowe’s attention since the Wolfpack has been giving up a lot of second chance opportunities in recent weeks. NC State’s last four opponents have averaged 15 offensive rebounds per contest. On Saturday, Mount St. Mary’s had 23 more field goal attempts than the Pack primarily because it was able to grab 20 offensive boards.

“As I told our players, we did so many things well in that game, but what was a little disappointing was the fact that we had just worked on boxing out for three straight days,” Lowe said. “We did more drills on boxing out than we had all year and we came out and really didn’t put our bodies on guys. I like for us to do everything well.”

On Wednesday, the Wolfpack will try to please its coach, while also making sure Courtney Fells doesn’t have to face the music when he returns home to Mississippi next week.

Big Ben Dishing It Out: The Wolfpack’s Ben McCauley is a big man who continues to put up some numbers that are normally associated with perimeter players. With 29 assists and only 13 turnovers this season, the 6-9 sophomore is ranked third in the ACC in assist to turnover ratio.

Toeing The Line: NC State edged Alabama in Tuscaloosa last December, 68-64. The Wolfpack survived that night despite only going to the free throw line four times. In fact, the Pack didn’t shoot its first free throw until Atsur drilled a pair with just 25 seconds remaining. NC State hopes a few more attempts comes its way on Wednesday, especially since it is currently the ACC’s second best free throw shooting team (72.7%).

My friend actually said to me on one possession "Its just you and that old guy". I was like then start yelling and it will be three of us.
And Neiman is still starting because Lowe wants Ferguson to play before he has starting pressure. I imagine if Ferguson gets confidence from some experience, he'll probably get time over Neiman.
As far as our loss, I think the passes that we constantly threw away shot us in the foot. Our rebounding was pretty lame for a lot of it, too.
And whoever that guy was last night, just because we had three white guys out there doesn't mean that any dark man out there is Grant. Don't call out Gavin when its Fells. Shits just embarassing.

Not to make anothe pointless Herb vs. the Good Coach argument but...

Quote :
"If you want to hate on grant, hate on the tons of horrible threes he tried to put down, he's worse than Hodge was when it comes to trying to sink a three ball. After he made his first three in the game (with like 6 misses before it) the very next play he runs down the court and immediately puts up another three. Clank, turnover, great shot selection there Gav Herb would have benched him for that shit but given our depth we just have to live with it. That, free throws, and pretty much just giving them the ball every possession for most of the second half is what killed our chances."

Are you kidding me? If Herb benched guys for taking dumbshit shots Evtimov and Atsur would have seen a combined 4 minutes of PT over the course of their Herb-coached careers. Please don't tell me that poor shot selection would have gotten you benched during the Herb era. IT seemed like all we did for(at least) the last 4 seasons under Herb that all we did on offense was chuck up ill-advised 3-balls. You're more embarrassing than yellow shorts guy.

"NC State-Alabama: Coaches post-game quotes
Courtesy: NC State
Release: 12/20/2006

NC State coach Sidney Lowe

“We didn’t give up, we didn’t quit. The guys were making the right plays and hustling at the end, which we weren’t doing at the beginning. We were careless with the ball. We didn’t [get man pressure on] the ball at the beginning until Trevor got in. Our offense hurt us more than anything. Sometimes that happens with a young club; guys try to make the big plays instead of the right ones.”

On turnovers: “They were careless passes, whether it be lobbing the ball to a guy who isn’t ready or not in the right spot. That hurt us. We weren’t patient enough to get the shots we needed.”

“Our game plan was when they went high and low to dig down and not go to the wings. Brandon and Bryan did a real good job with it and got some steals that way.”

On Richard Hendrix: “He makes the team difficult to play because they have a guy who can score. His screen pick-and-roll really hurt us, and we gave him some uncontested shots.”

On Trevor Ferguson: “I’m very pleased with the way he played. He played absolutely fantastic. He initiated the run and got some stops. He picked up on defense, which really helped us. Offensively, he pushed the ball and never gave up.”

On next week’s game against Cincinnati: “It’s very important for us to get this road win for momentum. We need to stop the bleeding and keep this from going on too long. We need to do something special that the guys will be proud of.”

Alabama coach Mark Gottfried

“First of all, I’m really proud of the way our guys played. They played really well, especially for the first 35 minutes. We lost our composure there in the last five minutes and we can learn from that, but I’d rather learn from a win than from a loss.”

“At the end of the game, we took our foot off the gas a little. I think we were concerned with not fouling and didn’t guard them in some key situations. They took advantage of it and made some really tough shots.”

“We executed our game plan and ran our offense well. We moved the ball and got it where we wanted to. We had balanced scoring, Mykal Riley got some steals and hit some good shots. We knew they’re not very deep inside and we took advantage of that.”

“Our defense was good for most of the game. Take away those last five minutes — and I know you can’t do that — but take away those five minutes and our defensive numbers are pretty good. And you have to give their guys some credit for the way they finished the game. They’re playing without their guard, Atsur, and don’t have much depth, and they never quit and just kept coming.”

ok I'm tired of people asking for vids of our dunks because they happen every frikkin game now. Herb is not our coach, it should not be a shock when Fells dunks in someone's mouth anymore. kkthx

Although I wouldnt mind someone puting together a highlight reel when the season is over of all the dunks and good plays.

Great effort for the pack. Say what you will, but when the team picked to finish last in the ACC has a chance at the end with the #10 team, I'm happy.

A good loss, if there is such a thing.

Gavin gets ball-hoggish at times, thinks he's mini-Hodge, and thinks he's the only one on the team so he takes dumb shots

Gavin's better at penetrating and taking jumpshots, not 3 pointers...if he shoots 3 pointers he needs to learn how to shoot 3 pointers

I like how Lowe's team gets praise for losing and Herb's teams got berated for winning ("it could have been a BETTER win--we SHOULD have won by 20 points instead of 6")

This is actually very true. Lowe hasn't really proved anything and people are already BOAST BOAST BOAST. I love the man, but don't put him on a damn pedestal yet.

^, ^^

I find it hilarious. People saying 'best loss EVER!!!!!!!!!!' I mean I'm not disappointed with any loss this year but I'm not going to act like I'm jumping up and down with a huge smile on my face as we lose... It's just ridiculous.

I firmly believe that Sidney Lowe is going to do great things here. However, I'm not going to sit here and say he is the next Coach K or Dean Smith or Bobby Knight at this point, yet..

A loss is a loss is a loss. You can learn things from them but no loss is worth getting ecstatic over..

We were picked to finish last in the ACC and we came within a few points of beating the #10 team in the nation. Moreover, I'd say every Pack fan had at least a glimmer of hope we'd win last night, Herb's team would NOT have come anywhere NEAR winning after falling down 20+ points.

There is just a lot of revisionist history going on these days when it comes to our basketball program and I have a problem with that. It's unfair to the old players who have come through the program and it's unfair to the old coaches/assistants who have moved on.

Whatever though. Sidney is doing a great job but it's not like we were in the depths of the college bball world the past couple of years like a lot of people are making out .. that's all.

This isn't about the old coach at all, it's about people being disingenious...

-----------------

About Gavin.. I think people are being a bit tough on him. He is not a 1. He is more of a combo wingman type and he is being asked to play in a role he isn't suited for. I think he has done a pretty damn good job this year and he has certainly shown he is a team player to play in a role he knows he isn't suited for. When Atsur gets back I think we'll see a dramatic increase in Gavin's productivity and a decrease in the negatives..

the next day i still feel like we couldve won if trevor got major minutes. i was so upset as we pissed away the game while a walk on got major minutes and we lacked guard play. nieman is an offensive liability. when the ball goes to him everything resets.

also last night I realized we're not making the tournament this year and we just might be last int he ACC

i had this blind hope that most of you guys do that we're not really going to be that bad, but when i saw how many passes were intercepted and how many ill-advised shots were taken...well that all changed

If Herb stays, maybe we still have Brackman, maybe we still have Ced, maybe we still have everyone who was supposed to come here, and most of all maybe we still have an offense that at least works so we can beat a team like Virginia and compete against WVU

Little victories will only go so far to keep the lot of you happy (and i don't mean wins)

no

he just came in when it was worse than a pile of damp horse shit and spent a decade building it into a top 25 program that made the tournament every year and rebuilt an impecable image.

obviously he had no passion for the program.

You guys are fucking retarded. Im excited about Sidney Lowe as well, and I like him a lot. But youre using your moronic hatred of Herbs offense to build up our lesser ( but OMG MOR DUNKS) team this year.

are you shitting me? are you telling me that if herb was coaching this team w/ the exact same players it would be better? that is the dumbest thing i have ever read.

two words. dumb ass

they are getting PAID by doing what they are. we all KNEW brackman was not going to play all 4 years, too much money in MLB to take chances at a injury while playing basketball. after last season when he injured his hip during basketball and had it affect his baseball game, it was a done deal he was not coming back.

we would still have his two recruits though.
