"What? It's already over? Over at Cheapassgamer.com, folks are posting that the Xbox 360 HD DVD player is being marked down at Walmart to US $130 from its retail price of $199.99. What's more, apparently Walmart has cleared out its HD DVD players. Reader superatt sends word that The New York Post reports that HD DVD is being outsold by Blu-ray — Since the PS3 went on sale, Blu-ray sales have jumped to nearly three times that of HD DVD. Says Fox Home Entertainment's Steve Feldstein:

"The format war is in its final phase... It's never been a question of if Blu-ray will pass HD DVD, but a matter of when."

Yeah, at this point I'm just waiting for one side to win. I'd prefer it not be sony, but it's looking like it's heading in that direction. The faster one side dies off, the faster I can start being a good consumer and buying tons of movies I won't ever watch in High Definition.

i might end up buying a ps3 if i end up having to work at langley this summer. (nothing to do in hampton, va). after that i'd mostly use it as an hd movie player. and if the trend of blu-ray heading towards dominance, i'll go ahead and buy it.

I got the Departed and American Psycho on blu ray yesterday. Departed looked fucking awesome, A.P. looked ok. Slightly better than DVD quality.

Now have 10 Blu ray and 9 HD-DVD and I can say that they look about the same.

When I bought a PS3, I knew I'd end up getting one anyway to play some titles that will pretty much only be coming out for PS3; like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid.

Now I'm finding myself buying Blu-ray disks anyway, regardless of who will "win" in the long haul, since I'll always be able to play it on my PS3 anyway.

not to mention that microsoft is already entertaining the idea of selling a blu-ray player for the 360 "should Blu-Ray come out on top".

Are the Blu Ray figures actual dollar numbers or is it related to number of units? Because I have seen quite a few Blu Ray sales in the past month and ZERO HD DVD sales.

doesn't even really matter at this point.

There are more BD players + more BD movies in people's homes.

The gap is only going to widen.

The end is near.

disclaimer: by "the end", I mean the proverbial end. I can make no explicit guarantees that this silly format war is nearing any sort of conclusion. Carry on.

Ah, here is a good thread on it

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=798080&page=114&pp=30

In reading the last page, it seems like a lot of talk on both sides about the trends in the numbers.

Definitely way to early to call a victor for either of these.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070409-hd-dvd-takes-early-lead-in-european-market.html

Quote :
"Blu-ray may have the upper hand in the North American high-definition market, but HD DVD appears to be the format of choice in Europe. European movie studios are favoring HD DVD over Blu-ray due to the cost savings involved in HD DVD duplication for these independent European studios, according to a report on the Financial Times (subscription).

Part of the reason for Blu-ray's success in the US is due to the inclusion of Blu-ray players in Sony's newest console, the PS3. According to recent research from Adams Media Research, Blu-ray players that are built into consoles account for roughly 94 percent of all Blu-ray players purchased in the US. Going by that data, Sony's delay in launching the PS3 in Europe could then be holding back the adoption of Blu-ray among the movie studios there, many of which are independent and must focus on targeting the largest installed user base—HD DVD—with their limited budgets.

Production costs are also of importance to smaller studios which may not be willing to purchase entirely new equipment in order to press Blu-ray discs, or incur substantially higher costs to produce them. French replication company Qol CEO Laurent Villaume told FT that the risk involved in producing Blu-ray disks isn't comparable to that of HD DVD: "An HD DVD replication line costs about €800,000 and you can make 40,000 discs a day on it. A Blu-Ray replication line costs €1.7m or €1.8m and you can make 10,000 to 15,000 discs a day."

"The expense is prohibitive," said DS DVD CEO Alex Ponti to FT. "Additional capacity will be needed when we produce additional content but that is years away," he added. The HD DVD standard requires players to have an Ethernet jack and European studios feel that they could take advantage of this to offer extra content to HD DVD players over the Internet rather than on the discs themselves.

So far, over three times as many European films are on HD DVD compared to Blu-ray: 35 to 10 (truly miniscule numbers). But Sony's PS3 launch in Europe could easily change that, depending on how well the console sells and changes the installed user base numbers. Some European studios admitted to Financial Times that they're not married to one platform or another if it becomes advantageous to switch. "All the work we are doing on high definition will be useful for making Blu-Ray discs if the Blu-Ray standard wins. It will be easy to change position," Studio Canal's Rodolphe Buet said.

Although Blu-ray may be edging out HD DVD sales in the US, it's not as if the general public is scrambling to buy either player—or movies for them—en masse just yet. A recent report released by Sony showed that among the top ten movie titles for both HD DVD and Blu-ray sales for the week ending on March 18, 2007, three spots were held by movies that sold fewer than 1,000 units each. In fact, only one movie on the entire top ten list had five-figure sales digits at all, with the remaining nine titles adding up to a combined sales total of 12,430 units.

These paltry sales numbers confirm that both HD DVD and Blu-ray have a long way to go before claiming victory in any sense of the word. Both formats have different studios on their respective sides and there has yet to be a major catalyst to get the public to tip one way or another by any meaningful metric. Although Blu-ray has a lot more studio backing than HD DVD, the adult film industry seems to have sided with the HD DVD camp for the same reasons as the European studios: production costs. But even porn isn't likely to provide enough of a sales boost for HD DVD to give the format the crown just yet."

it's sad really when you need to bundle stuff to win a format war... just think if the wii had an hd-dvd drive, this format war would be over.

Well if the Wii had an HD-DVD drive it would be at LEAST 200 more in price and probably more due to the fact that it's probably not powerful enough to decode the signal. You'd be looking at a $500 console and I seriously doubt the casual gamer would be interested in that which takes away a HUGE segment of the Wii demographic.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070423-why-early-high-def-disc-adoption-rates-dont-really-matter.html

Quote :
"And now for some more context

Compared to sales of movies on DVD—by far the most popular format—the numbers for the next-generation discs are a mere drop in the bucket. The top selling DVD for the week ending March 30 was Happy Feet [DVD], which moved over 4 million units that week alone. For the week ending March 11, Borat was the big winner, and the number two title, Peter Pan, sold 2.2 million discs.

If you do the math on Happy Feet and the Blu-ray version of Casino Royale (est. 59,680 units for the quarter), the latter title took three months to sell just under 1.5 percent of what Happy Feet was able to sell in its first week. Another dose of perspective: in the seven days after its release on DVD, Borat [DVD] sold more discs than all HD DVD and Blu-ray titles combined since the launch of two formats last year.

....

One such change may come from Wal-Mart, which has reportedly contracted with a Taiwanese manufacturer for 2 million HD DVD players. Fuh Yuan will begin delivering the players to Wal-Mart in 2008, and the HD DVD players will sell for $299 each, if the reports are to be believed.

...

With volumes like what we're seeing now, however, it's like trying to call an election with less than 2 percent of the precincts reporting."
