^^Yeah i agree my wording was fucked up when i wrote that. I think it's funny how i decided to say "1200p" casually to describe a resolution and everyone makes a big deal out of it. I really don't give a shit either way. You guys can call it whatever you want. Plus i don't buy parts from Intrex, i just went there to get some HD screws and some advice about a few things. I buy from TD or newegg.
Your argument isn't any more valid than mine is. You claim that i can't say "1200p" because it's misleading because it's 16:10 and not 16:9. Well it's the exact same with SDTV/HDTV resolutions. 480i/p is NOT 16:9, but 4:3. So in actuality your system is more messy than mine. You have SDTV 480i and EDTV 480p. Both use the vertical resolution of "480" but that implies either 640 x 480, 704 x 480, or 852 × 480. Than you could even get into progressive scan dvd players outputting 720 by 480. So there you got 4 different kinds of "480". Whereas in my resolution of "1200p" you can only either have 1920 by 1200, or 1600 by 1200.
I think calling it "1200p" or "1600p" is alot more logical than calling it WUXGA or WQXGA. No one remembers what all those mean. Hell is goes all the way up to WHUXGA (7680×4800) and beyond.

^Yeah i really don't care. I play both 360 and ps3 and they're great. The title of this thread is "pc vs. ps3 vs. xbox" though. So it's implied there's some discussion comparing the three. It's kinda stupid to compare them though. 6/22/2007 9:56:07 AM |

Can anyone comment on the ability of the ps3/360 to play media formats? I know my roommates old modded xbox will play every single format we've thrown at it, including .mov, mkvs and real media format. How do the ps3/360 compare? My other friends cheap 40$ sony dvd player has a usb on the front which plays any file format too. Do the next gen consoles have issues with various codecs? 6/25/2007 1:39:35 PM |

The PS3 more or less sucks donkey balls at decoding any sort of video. I expect that to be addressed at some point in the future if they're serious about wanting it to be the center of our digital world.
Can't comment on the rest, but I'd expect the 360 to do a little bit better. 6/25/2007 2:34:50 PM |

I've heard the 360 sucks too in regard to decoding. One of the reasons i'd buy one is so it could act as a media center in my living room, and if my roommates old modded xbox pwns any next gen console wrt decoding, then it's not worth it to buy a newer one for a media center. Although microsoft claims the 360 can act as an extender, but MCE has trouble with codecs as well. 6/25/2007 2:37:50 PM |

First off, I'd like to begin this post by saying that neodata686 might be retarded.
The 360 plays WMV, MPEG2, and x264 files (after the latest dashboard update) at the very least.
No, it doesn't play back every file format under the sun, but it works well with what it can play. Both consoles have a bunch of programs that will allow people to transcode files into a format that said console can play back. It sucks that it has to be done this way, but that's the difference between a questionably legal piece of software and a legit gaming console.
What really sucks is that there doesn't seem to be a way to properly transcode into WMV from MKV or MPEG4 while still retaining 6 channel audio Part of that might be an ffmpeg bug though. 6/25/2007 6:37:56 PM |

^I agree the xbox 360 has far better codec support than the ps3. I just don't understand how so many dvd players with built in usb can support such a wide range of decoders compared to the next gen consoles. I'm speaking in regards to 100% legit HD/SD tv recordings and other backups. 6/25/2007 8:32:28 PM |

Mediahome has worked a lot better than I expected. I've been able to stream every file format under the sun (save for quicktime, but really who gives a fuck about .mov) to my PS3 over 802.11g. Even WMVs work great. A couple of my more highly compressed DivX files have had sound sync issues, but the vast majority play flawlessly.
Also, it appears the PS3 has a 2gig file size limit as I have a 1080p version of Gladiator split into 5 4.5gig files, yet when I tried to copy one of them over, it stopped at 2gigs.

^I get some serious sync issues with MediaHome when playing back xvid files on PS3. My connection is wired. It plays most everything else OK. Don't get it. 6/26/2007 10:54:10 AM |

Hmmm, I'll have to go try and play something that is definitely xvid. Like I said, only the shit that was really heavily compressed had sound sync issues. Your average 700mb file for a 2 hour movie played fine. 6/26/2007 12:21:01 PM |
