http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/25/wal-mart-selling-toshibas-a2-hd-dvd-player-for-199/

we are now entering mass market appeal territory, this is where the format war REALLY begins.

So in the week Transformers was released, the Blu-ray/HD DVD sales ratio was 51:49 in Blu-ray's favor. Basically 50/50 if you consider margin of error, and considering the week before it was 71:29, obviously Transformers made a big difference.

Carry on.

"Most analysts still see the format war as too close to call and predict both formats will continue to co-exist as the audience for high-definition discs continues to increase, growth that likely would occur faster if there was only one format.

Blu-ray Disc continues to enjoy the lion’s share of studio and consumer electronics manufacturer support. Among the six major studios, four support Blu-ray, three of them exclusively: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainnment and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. Warner Home Video releases titles in both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, while Universal Studios Home Entertainment and now Paramount are exclusively in the HD DVD camp."

out of the three, i've only ever seen anything decent out of Fox. I'm curious to see some New Line Cinema stuff though...like Lord of the Rings.

Sony Pictures is Columbia Pictures. Walt Disney is Pixar (again). That's a lot of movies you haven't seen, sir.

I've seen everything pixar that i'd want to see. Disney is going down the drain...they have been for some time. Pirates was their life raft for a while.

And just because they say 'exclusive to blu ray' doesn't mean its not on regular DVD. so not being able to see the movie is a really stupid point.

GT5 will be released in Japan December 13, IIRC.

Golovko, your argument fails on so many levels. By denouncing Blu-ray exclusives, you also denounce HD DVD exclusives.

I want HD-DVD to win just because of all the Sony equipment that has pissed me off over the years. Car head unit that needs a proprietary controller, equipment that is overpriced and under featured, all the proprietary formats (MemoryStick, Minidisc, Betamax, etc.) , and other things.

I like their HD Trinitron TVs, but dammit, they should always loose the format wars.

I saw sparks come out the side of my week (ok 3 day) old sony tv as it died.

It made horrible sounds but oddly enough no weird smells.

The only reason why any of their tvs are good is because they arn't DLP based. They overscan like a motherfucker, the vga input blows goats, and the biggest pet peve of mine is the "guide" for OTA channels.

Why do about 5 companies make blu-ray players and none of them cost less than 400$ (ps3)???/??///?

I just bought the 360 add-on the other day.. got the King Kong movie inside.. two free movies with purchase.. along with a free copy of Heroes Season 1 and the mail-in 5 free movies to go along with it.. The movies I get are valued more than the player itself.

I'll probably end up getting the blu ray very soon anyway...and years from now it will end up just like our family betamax.

do you get this extra content from purchasing it anywhere or is this store specific? and is this ANY two movies that you want, or is from a selection?

Heroes promotion is over.. that was one of those week-only Bestbuy things.. the 2 free ones I believe is also Bestbuy, but it's any hd-dvd that's $34.99 or less. This is also true for any Toshiba player, but I don't think King Kong is packaged with those, and the 5 free dvds is any store, but the selection is limited (http://assets.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/hddvd/Xbox360_HDDVDOffer.pdf)

imho, unless Blu-ray players drop below $400 before holiday season, we could see the winning move here with a sub $200 HD DVD player, I think people will hop on this real quick considering HD TV's was one of the hottest items for holiday buyers last year, granted only 20% knew how to hook them up.

yeah, pretty much. one of those details people read later and go "oh, did we get that with our TV? oh, i guess not.". last christmas was when they pushed out all of the 1080i models off the floor to make room for 1080p, which were the new thing fall 2006.

^^incase you forgot. 360's have been on sale for a long long time now. So there is already an enormous xbox360 user base that can help drive up HD DVD sales by buying the HD DVD player add-on. FAIL

not to mention the new xbox360 people that ^ mentioned.

i'd rather take my chances on a system that might die because it has ALL the best games on it that are out, than some late blooming system that may never fulfill my gaming need in terms of excellent games. so there i said it now what?! i think both systems are hot in all honesty, but the ps3 is severely lacking on the game shelf. the wii is not even a comparison with games like cooking mama, hahaha.

This is certainly interesting.

Quote :
"Also there was Dan Silverberg, VP of high-definition media for Warner Home Video, which since Paramount’s move to the HD DVD camp is the only studio to support both next-generation formats.

That may not be for long, Silverberg said. “One thing that may be changing is our strategy,” he said. “When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide — so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating now that we are in the fourth quarter.

Silverberg noted that Warner has the top-selling Blu-ray title of all time with 300 and is consistently No. 1 or No. 2 in both Blu-ray sales market share and in number of Blu-ray titles in the market.

“We can definitely talk Blu-ray,” he said. “We are committed to the format.” At the Monday morning kickoff, the featured speaker was David Berman, director of Home Theater Specialists of America (HTSA), a buying consortium of 62 dealers and 800 installers with combined revenue of more than half a billion dollars a year. He said the HTSA supports Blu-ray because a member survey found 92% favoring Blu-ray over HD DVD."
