The Centennial Authority is a volunteer board appointed by leaders from the state of North Carolina, Wake County, the city of Raleigh and Wake County Mayors. It was created by the General Assembly in 1995 to study, design, construct, own, promote, finance and operate a facility now known as the RBC Center. The RBC Center houses entertainment shows such as concerts, circuses and ice shows and is home to sports teams such as the Carolina Hurricanes and North Carolina State University basketball. 5/16/2008 4:16:42 PM |

I was hoping that someone that actually heard this would report back with some of the better comments from people that called in. At least to know what kind of corner Fowler was backed into.

I can't believe they gave this guy a vote of confidence. It looks like a group of inept leaders trying to save face.
It's interesting that same time that Fowler is flushing our Athletic Department down the proverbial toilet that Oblinger has been flushing our academics down the toilet.

There is a systemic acceptance of failure and mediocrity at NCSU that has never existed before. There is no committment to excellence at any level, albeit NCSU has some of the best professors available. Which college at State is seeing the most growth? I think if State put the cap on freshman enrollment right now, you would see the average SAT score increase dramatically over the next few years and we'd be in the 1200 range. SAT scores are definitely going to go down or stay the same if you increase the size of the freshman class by over 1,000 in 5 years. UNC on the other hand wants to sit there and have a circle jerk over how they are elite b/c of their SAT scores, b/c they refuse to grow the freshman class that much in response to the increase in population of the state. 5/22/2008 9:52:15 AM |

^ exactly. I had friends who had high gpas in high school (4.5-4.9) but weren't excepted at unc because they had an SAT in the low 1200s. It's ridiculous. 5/22/2008 10:17:00 AM |

Hopefully this means that Fowler will be shown the door some time in the next year. It's similar to that show of empty support that a lot of coaches get right before they are fired or move on due to building pressure. Remember the vote of confidence the faculty gave Sendek before he left.
This kind of brings me to something that I discussed over lunch with my boss and another Ph.D. that has a ton of experience. We noticed some people were getting awards and recognition and began discussing it. The one Ph.D. that's not my boss said that some bosses will try to recognize employees they think aren't doing as well as they'd hope as a way to motivate them to do better b/c they will feel like they are appreciated. If they don't improve their performance soon after, then they will be let go. 5/22/2008 10:51:56 AM |

^^ Yeah I don't mind growth, but to grow by 1,000 students over 5 years is a pretty large increase.

Quote : | " The State of State Part Two–Improvement Published by WV Wolf on 05/21/2008 in ACC, AD, Baseball, Basketball, Football, General, NCS Administration, Non-Revenue and Stat of the Day. Tags: AD, Lee Fowler, NCStateAthletics.
Disclaimer: Only facts and statistics will be stated below, you the reader can draw your own conclusions and opinions.
Did NC State’s athletic programs make progress and do better this school year than they did last year? One metric (and certainly not the only one) is to look at regular season conference standings.
State competes in 21 different ACC sports plus gymnastics (EAGL) and rifle (SEARC & GARC). In the 2007-2008 school year, 6 out of those 23 programs finished higher in their conference standings than they did the year before, 11 finished worse and 6 maintained the same standing. All 12 ACC schools compete in the sport unless indicated.
Programs that improved their conference standing in 07-08: • Football—10th to 8th • Baseball—6th to 4th • W Golf—7th to 6th (out of 9 schools) • W Swimming—10th to 8th (out of 11 schools) • W Tennis—8th to 7th • W Indoor Track—11th to 7th
Programs that maintained the same conference standing in 07-08: • M Golf—7th (out of 11 schools) • M Soccer—9th (out of 9 schools) • M Swimming—7th (out of 11 schools) • M Outdoor Track—3rd • Volleyball—12th • Rifle—1st SEARC (out of 6 schools) / 7th GARC (out of 8 schools)
Programs that had declining conference standing in 07-08: • M Basketball—10th to 11th • W Basketball—3rd to 8th • M Cross Country—1st to 2nd • W Cross Country—1st to 2nd • W Soccer—8th to 11th (out of 11 schools) • Softball—2nd to 5th (out of 8 schools) • M Tennis—7th to 8th • W Outdoor Track—10th to 11th • M Indoor Track—3rd to 6th • Wrestling—1st to 5th (out of 6 schools) • Gymnastics—1st to 2nd (out of 8 schools)
Some summary statistics for 2007-08: • 26.1% of State’s programs improved their conference standing • 26.1% of State’s programs maintained their conference standing • 47.8% of State’s programs had their conference standing decline • 52.2% of State’s programs improved or maintained their conference standing • 73.9% of State’s programs did not improve their conference standing
Along the same lines, here are some conference standing trends for the eight year time span Lee Fowler has been AD (Rifle is not included).
Two programs had or tied their best conference finish in 2007-08: • W Tennis—7th • M Outdoor Track—3rd
Eight programs had or tied their best conference finish within the past two years: • W Basketball—3rd • M Cross Country—1st • W Cross Country—1st • M Tennis—7th • W Tennis—7th • M Outdoor Track—3rd • M Indoor Track—3rd • Gymnastics—1st
Ten programs had or tied their worst conference finish in 2007-08: • M Basketball—11th • W Basketball—8th • M Golf—7th • M Soccer—9th • W Soccer—11th • Softball—5th • M Swimming—7th • W Outdoor Track—11th • Volleyball—12th • Wrestling—5th
Fourteen programs had or tied their worst conference finish within the past two years: • Football—10th • M Basketball—11th • W Basketball—8th • M Golf—7th • W Golf—7th • M Soccer—9th • W Soccer—11th • Softball—5th • M Swimming—7th • W Swimming—10th • W Outdoor Track—11th • W Indoor Track—11th • Volleyball—12th • Wrestling—5th
Some additional summary statistics for Lee Fowler’s eight years (not including Rifle): # 9.1% of State’s programs had or tied their best conference finish in 2007-08 # 36.4% of State’s programs had or tied their best conference finish within the past 2 years # 45.5% of State’s programs had or tied their worst conference finish in 2007-08 # 63.6% of State’s programs had or tied their worst conference finish within the past 2 years
In the past two years, every program except for Baseball either had or tied their best conference finish OR their worst conference finish and W Basketball did both.
Notes: The ACC finish for M Swimming, W Swimming and Wrestling is based on their ACC championship result and not their win/loss record standing.
Rifle data is not included in the 2nd part of this analysis for two reasons: • Rifle competes in both the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) and the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC). • Complete historical data for Rifle could not be found. The GARC website only has final results for the past two years and no website appears to exist for the SEARC. There is a link on GoPack.com for the Rifle media guide, however it leads to a blank page stating “No News”.
Coming Soon in Part Three: Lee Fowler sets some standards for State’s athletic programs. Will they meet those standards?" |

Lee Fowler must be questioning his entire existence at this point. It's pretty clear to everyone who is paying any attention that he is a failure at his job. I just hope that when I get to be that invested in a career that I don't turn out like him. It must be terribly depressing for him, but I am sure that the 264 (or whatever) a year he collects is a pretty good salve. 5/23/2008 12:22:28 AM |

Ok, lets assume for fun that this author is a UNC fan. In reality, how much would Fowler getting fired set us back in our programs? It seems to be that since we just went through coaching changed in BB and FB those would be on cruise control for a while and wouldnt be affected so much by any change.
Quote : | "Fowler's run afoul with Pack nation
The weekend's ACC baseball tournament crowned a champion, Miami, which got to the title game by defeating N.C. State 5-2 on Saturday. N.C. State is one of four ACC schools selected to host an NCAA tournament regional site, joining Miami, Florida State and North Carolina. That's the good news.
The not-so-good news for the Wolfpack is that another shot at an ACC title in a major sport has passed the Wolfpack by. State has won a few conference titles this decade in less-recognized sports, such as wrestling and softball, but among the six that would be front-page news - football, men's and women's basketball, baseball and men's and women's soccer - it's been 16 years since an ACC crown, won by the baseball team when Ray Tanner was the coach.
The last conference championship in the other five major sports: football (1979); men's basketball (1987); women's basketball (1991); men's soccer (1990); and women's soccer (1988). How can a school as large as N.C. State, competing in a premier conference that resides in a talent-rich part of the country, fail to reach the pinnacle against its rivals? This lack of success has been a growing point of contention among many of its rabid fans.
A couple of explanations: The athletic department is finally catching up with its facility upgrades that were long overdue. The department's middle-of-the-road budget, which affects coaches' salaries and recruiting money, remains an issue. Then there's athletic director Lee Fowler, the target among many in Wolfpack nation. Fans want a return on their investment. They view Fowler, who arrived in 2000, as someone who's not properly handled a perceived influx of cash and blame him for the lack of on-field success. To Fowler's credit, coaching staff salaries increased as soon as he arrived, and the school has avoided embarrassment from its department and athletes. But State's not winning, and at some point that falls on the AD. In the Sears Director's Cup standings, which measures the success of an entire athletic program, State is 66th - placing it behind Harvard, Hawaii, Denver, Princeton, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, Navy, Northern Iowa and SMU. Fowler's bungling of the basketball coaching search two years ago was the final straw for some. If that situation flares up again soon, there's little support in Fowler spearheading the next hire. Football coach Tom O'Brien fell into the school's lap because he badly wanted out of Boston College, so Fowler is generally given little or no credit for that hiring. And he can't run from the fact that no other ACC school has failed to win at least one of the six aforementioned titles during his reign.

I wish that he would expound on this a little. How big of an issue is this? Even if we are "middle of the road" shouldn't it be reasonable to finish in the middle of the ACC?
Lee Fowler is being exposed more everyday for the failure that he really is. I hope that he is still interviewing for every job opening that people will talk to him about because I am thinking that his days are numbered at NCSU.5/26/2008 10:23:40 AM |

As far as the Director's Cup is concerned, the top 25 schools' budget on average is 60M. Our budget is 33M and we've finished in the 35-55 range in his tenure. The Ohio State's, UNC's, etc have big bucks, we don't, and it shows. But to contradict myself, I have not seen the Yankees win the WS since their 200M payroll...

^ I wonder how willing students would be to double their fees to sports and recreation from like 50 bucks a semester to 100 or whatever they are. Most wouldn't even notice the difference.
If money is one issue that we need to address, then it should be done before Lee Fowler gets fired in order to attract a higher quality AD candidate.
Does anyone know who is in control of the budget that goes to athletics at NCSU, is it the same at all UNC schools and they just have better alumni donations in Chapel Hill, etc? 5/26/2008 1:31:17 PM |

Fowler tonight at the Wolfpack Club Caravan: "Facilities, facilities, underappreciated, softball, baseball, facilities, facilities, internet people, facilities, softball, facilities"
And when Fowler had control of the mic and the question was asked to Tom O'brien, "Coach O'brien what are your thoughts on us having the first game of the season against South Carolina and a follow up game at Clemson just two weeks afterwards?""
Fowler: "Well, let me say I think we'd rather just not play those games, HAHA! But let me hand the mic over to Coach O'brien" to which the two USC/Clemsons fans in the place erupted into applause
Typical Fowler defeatism, maybe just a misguided attempt at humor but a highly inappropriate one for a WOLFPACK CLUB gathering I thought 5/27/2008 11:09:07 PM |
