a lot of folks still use clothespins. when i started fishing down south around oak island is the first time i saw a majority using those wire things.

i just love to hear that loud snap when a clothespin pops

I'm going fishing tomorrow...cause I have 200+ hrs of comp time
Gonna go to the 258 bridge and see if I can snag a striper.

I've got n00b fishing gear questions.
-What type/length/actions do yall use for rockfish in rivers?

-I want to surf fish sometime and I'm too cheap to buy more rods and reels. Could I just buy a long medium action saltwater rod and stick my Abu Garcia 404 spinning reel on it? I know I wouldn't have the best line capacity but I could put enough braided line on it to be useful. The only advantage of a bigger reel is line capacity right?...or am I missing something?

are you fishing live/cut bait or artificials?

for live/cut bait on the bottom i fish 7' medium heavy one-piece graphite rods with abu garcia 6500s spooled with 17 or 20# mono. use 25 or 30# fluro on my leader.

for artificials i fish medium action 6'6" or 7' with a 2000-4000 class spinning reel spooled with 8 or 10# fireline

and no, bigger reels give you more power to crank on larger fish

If I can find a baitshop on the way to the bridge then I might get some minnows.
I'll also try to catch a shad or white perch or something to use for cutbait.
Otherwise it's gonna be some Gulp minnows, Fishbites shad, bucktails/hairy worms, and flukes.

I have a 6' medium heavy and 6.5' medium with Abu Garcia 404 and 20 lb braid.

So you get some leverage with a bigger reel at the beach. Would it be a bad idea to use my lil 404 and a bigger rod? Seems like all I need to do is to be able to throw a heavy sinker a little farther.

[Edited on April 29, 2008 at 12:49 AM. Reason : The only saltwater reel I can afford will be a POS. I'd rather wait til I can get a decent one.]

The 404 is a Dick's Sporting Goods thing.
It's basically a 304 with 8 bearings and nicer looking handle.

I wish I could afford a Shimano. I think the other brands offer better stuff at the lower price points.

I'm heading down to Beaufort this weekend for the first time this year. I'm going fly fishing on the Neuse with Cap't Gary Dubiel on Friday, then hope to get back into the haystacks for some drum fishing on Saturday and Sunday. Anybody else going to be down that way? Anyone care to share some favorite fishing holes down there?

Never been there...sorry.

Well the first trip offshore was a mixed bag. It was a really weird day. First thing, the ramp at Wrightsville Beach is almost always pack to the gills.....Sunday it was almost empty. There were only 10-15 trailers there when we pulled in at dawn. Weird...

Good news is that the boat ran great, I was nervous after it had set all winter, but it ran like a champ, even in the choppy seas. The weather was awesome too.

The bad news is we didn't catch much. Went to the 23 mile rock/Esso Nashville area and trolled half the day for kings and bottom fished the second half. Caught a few false albacore and one bonita, but no kings.

The other weird thing is that we fished over some artificial wreck numbers, but I never could find them on sonar. I'm quite sure my GPS works fine, so I'm thinking the depthfinder can't quite read well enough for the 110-120' range. It read the bottom, or seemed to, but I couldn't find those wrecks...

We found a few good places for bottom fishing, but only wound up with Black Sea Bass and a few other trash fish. Maybe the sonar wasn't really reading bottom at all and I just thought I was in good looking places? That's my only guess.

So I'm quite stumped at how I failed to catch fish on top AND bottom.

White perch run in schools. I used to know a few spots where we could pull them up one after another all afternoon. The best thing I found was to jig using a Hopkins spoon (one of the most versatile lures ever!) or one of those fuzzy crappy lures.

I've heard of people catching one perch, tying a balloon on a string to it, and letting it go. That one would then re-join the school and you'd know exactly where to jig based on the location of the balloon. I never had any trouble pulling them up whenever I wanted, but it's an idea.

They're pretty tasty if you fry them up. Much better than bream or any other small inland fish that I've found.

No idea...I've never done it. Probably in an inhumane way. It does make sense though that one perch would just swim back to all the others.

Yeah, I was thinking either a knot around the tail or leaving the hook in. Either way, the fish would probably die in a couple days.

Although, you could probably run a string through the gills and not actually tie the knot

Since he is tied to a balloon you can just go grab him and pull him back up. Then be like "You're free traitor!!!" and let him go.

I bought a couple of rod & reel combos at a yard sale last weekend. First was a Penn Senator 12/0 reel on a custom rod. Second was a Penn gold baitcaster on a Shakespeare rod. $75 for both.

That Senator would be on eBay already, but I couldn't fit it in my car with the top up and it was pouring raining Sunday night when I tried to leave the lake. Had to leave it there until I go back. Should be a quick $250+ sale and I'll keep the baitcaster combo for myself.

we used to catch a lot of white perch in the cooling lake at the HF Lee power plant here in goldsboro. we would use crappie minnows until we caught one, then we would cut the belly off of that one and make about 3 or 4 cut baits from it. it was a bright white color and really tough. you could fish all night with that one piece of perch belly and they'd hit it as soon as it hit the bottom. we filled coolers several times doing it. i agree that perch are pretty good, especially if they come from clean water (ie. the power plant).

and on the topic of hopkins spoons: i've probably caught 15 different species on those things. they're one of my favorites. i love drifting through schools of spanish and casting gold hopkins on light tackle when everyone else is trolling their asses off doing what we call "meat fishing".

Winds are supposed to be 10-20 down here in charelston tomorrow, but we are heading out for the first real outing of the season.

Got word that the menhaden are coming back in, so the big fish are sure to be following.

So..I never did catch a striper. Hell, I didn't catch a thing in the roanoke. Only got one nibble at Weldon.

But, I did buy myself an abu garcia light action rod/reel and fished in se7entythree's pond yesterday. Catching little bitty crappie on a light action is a hell of a lot more fun than losing all my bait, hooks, and sinkers in the roanoke.

So after fishing the outgoing tide for a few hours, then the incoming for a few more on the ICW here, we didnt see much real action.

The menhaden and finger mullet are coming back in for sure, we saw a lot of schools feeding on minnows, we just couldnt find anything bigger feeding on the menhaden/mullet.

We did pull in one 19" trout and a small flounder, but that was it.

Thought we had caught a nice size red, but it ended up being a ray. Damn rays.

That pretty much describes my weekend...Fished the Neuse Friday morning, that turned up nothing...fished the haystacks and the turning basin Saturday morning and that turned up a few small blue fish, two small trout, and one small flounder.

^^where on the neuse? my dad fished fairfield harbor saturday and only landed one keeper trout. lost a nice one (~20") at the boat and caught an illegal flounder also. i'm trying to decide where to go.

[Edited on May 5, 2008 at 1:19 PM. Reason : were the haystacks/TB trout grays or specks?]

we were fishing not too far from the public boat ramp right as you cross over into Oriental. The trout were caught on the neuse, not at the TB...my bad.

I forgot to mention that my wife dropped my polarized Oakley's into the neuse river...btw, Oakley's dont float

Friday morning it was nice. Warm with a real light SW wind. As the day went on, the wind picked up. They were calling for 10-15 kt SW winds, but they were probably higher than that. Water temp on the neuse was ~70 degrees.

Saturday, the wind died down a whole lot and it was really nice. Sunday, it was cloudy and spitting rain in the morning and it cleared off a little bit in the afternoon.

then i'll assume specks. the TB thing was throwing me off.

idk about you, but i kinda prefer fishing overcast/spitting rain, especially when the water is as clear as it has been lately on the pamlico.

Went to the Roanoke last Friday out of Weldon. Didn't catch much the first few hours of the morning. We were trying artificials and ended up putting 4 rock in the boat. Saw people killing them on minnows and ran to the bait store and got some, and in the last 1.5 hours of fishing put 21 rock in the boat. They were suspended halfway down in the water column and ready to bite. They were mostly 16-18", but we did pull in 2 that were 21". Not a bad morning of fishing at all. If we'd had the afternoon to fish I'm pretty sure we could've pulled in 50 more easily.
