Hung out with my buddies in Boone and just gorged, drank and ran shit on the foosball table. Walked all over boone, forded some stream up to the waste to get to huddle house (which blows...portions are not american)...great few days off the trail. here got a few pictures, nothing too exciting.

shelter w/ fireplace in Mt. Rogers State park....there goes my gear and the awaited pictures of the sleeping bag which has been warm

woke up to this at 4400 feet somewhere in southern virginia...nice shelter and thankfully dry snow

left to right - Captain oz, juicebox (he forded the kenebeck and did the CT challenge...~50 miles in one day) and Chevrolegs. Hung out with these guys for about a week and had a blast. It was good to finally hike with some sobos for a little bit."

Mile 1972. Gatlinburg, TN. Still having the time of my damn life. Too much fun.

I'm in the Smokey mountain national park as of now and it has been gorgeous. Snow on the ground, i'd say around 5-6". Although pretty, it's tough to walk in. Night times have been cold, down in the single digits....that's why i roll with two sleeping bags....skanks

left to right: OZ and Stretch...lol...i left them when i went to boone and on day 2 back from my hiatus, i ran into these guys at a shelter. They had taken two zeros...LOL...it was due to the chronic

somewhere in NC

somewhere in NC

Smokeys...if you live in NC and havent been, you need to go. Not too touristy this time of year either.

Bearded up

You probably didn't intend for this to be such a great picture, but your eyes all squinted up, plus your skin being red...that picture does a great job of conveying how fucking cold it is. I hate you.

balls deep in that sign

On a cold and snowy day, the first of December, and after 2 days of cold/freezing rain, I entered Georgia and now reside in Hiawasee with ~68 miles to go.

The past few days have been tough. Ive woken up to snow blowing in the shelter and frozen solid shoes. The rain has been way worse than the snow since it just soaks everything and freezes over night.

The clouds are dissipating and it looks to be a clear summit day on Springer mountain, which is anticipated to be the 6th of this month.

I remember this summer when me & TheBullDoza crossed this road in Maine. The "2000 mi" is for Northbounders, who came from Georgia. We had gone only 120 or so miles when we passed the sign. Now Erik has passed the real 2000 mile mark down in NC! Congratulations

let's compare fresh faced, sun-drenched Erik on the New Hampshire - Vermont border to the frostbitten mountain man on the NC - GA border. Brrrrrr!

Good thread. I too want to do some sort of excursion right now. A canoe from Raleigh to Wilmington would suffice.

Day in Vermont. We came across a sign that said ice cream and water....Godzilla, Macgyver and Mr Nice guy follow in hot pursuit. Turned out this man was the host and he invited us to a game of croquet in his back yard. It was a fucking blast.

Calf Mountain shelter...this was the spot where Nerdchick and I did our shake down hike before the real thing...made it here and was like damn, I cant believe i was here a few months ago...all nastalgic n shit

well, they can save your knees going down hill, which is what i got them for, but they also worked great for the supports of our tent. The other reason why i had em.

But yeah....i think hiking poles are fucking queer looking to use....don't tell nerdchick i said that though, we'd always debate about em and i would always stick up for em.

Other than using them for tent supports, i kept mine because after 100s of miles they just get beat up...they were pristine on day 1 and day by day i watched them degrade...i created that shit....unfortunately i lost them 2000 miles into the hike

^ aha! the truth comes out at last!

hiking poles look totally dorky and they're not necessary for young people hiking on normal terrain. I found a pair in a hiker box (boxes at hostels where hikers leave extra stuff that they don't want) and used them for about 200 miles.

But the trail in Maine and NH can get pretty nasty ... climbing over giant boulders, etc. Hiking poles help you go faster because you can lean on them and take bigger steps on rocks. My dilemma was that I prefered to use my hands to grab trees or rocks for balance. less likely to slip than a hiking pole. The one time they were really necessary was fording streams in Maine, one "stream" in particular was more than waist deep - poles help keep you from getting swept away!

Notice how Erik's poles are of no use to him in this section, Mahoosuc Notch

But for smaller boulders like the 2nd pic, you can go much faster with poles
