^^^^As a staunch Democrat I can firmly say he fired up his party with that speech, which is a primary goal of conventions these days, which is exactly what he needed to do as the election approaches. He was accepting the Democratic Party's nomination, so its good that is was a speech that appealed to his party as well as had some broad appeal elements in the mix.

Pat Buchanan tonight called Obama's speech the greatest convention speech of all time...must have swallowed hard before he got that out. He even said it was beautiful. Wow...haha, check that out:

Alex Castellanos of CNN who is a republican strategist said somewhat of the same.

Quote : | "What he didn't do was give an airy, abstract, dreamy confection of rhetoric. The McCain campaign set Obama up as a celebrity airhead, a Paris Hilton of wealth and elitism. And he let them portray him that way, and let them over-reach, and let them punch him again and again ... and then he turned around and destroyed them. If the Rove Republicans thought they were playing with a patsy, they just got a reality check.
He took every assault on him and turned them around. He showed not just that he understood the experience of many middle class Americans, but that he understood how the Republicans have succeeded in smearing him. And he didn't shrink from the personal charges; he rebutted them. Whoever else this was, it was not Adlai Stevenson. It was not Jimmy Carter. And it was less afraid and less calculating than Bill Clinton." |

Quote : | "Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) created the 'Pelosi 100' for people 'who contribute and raise $100,000 in personal funds,' according to documents obtained by ABC News.
The wealthy members of the 'Pelosi 100' attended a private, lavish party Monday night in the penthouse suite of the Denver Performing Arts Center, featuring Tony Bennett, John Legend and James Taylor.
There was a heavy security presence with police telling reporters 'no media is allowed,' although observers on the balcony of a nearby apartment building could view the scene.
Also included in the $100,000 Pelosi package was 'preferred booking' at a top downtown Denver hotel, four convention hall credentials and access to luxury sky boxes overlooking the convention floor." |

[Democrat] Lawmakers say rules are a 'pain in the ass' [one poor lawmaker had to miss the Kanye concert! Outrageous! ]
Quote : | "DENVER — It’s taken just three convention days for Democratic lawmakers to get buyer’s remorse over sweeping new ethics rules they passed last year.
Members of Congress attending the Democratic National Convention are expressing frustration with the thicket of restrictions that they say have caused confusion and pointless irritation.
'It’s a pain in the ass!' said Rep. Jim Moran (Va.), one of 221 Democrats who voted for the final version of the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007.
Lawmakers have paid as much as $90 from their own pocket to attend parties that many guests attend for free and that members of Congress used to enjoy gratis at past conventions.
'I think the whole thing is ridiculous,' said Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), who was asked to pay $90 to attend a party thrown by the Recording Industry Association of America that featured a performance by rap superstar Kanye West.
'The whole premise is ridiculous that I can’t go to a convention party for free but a lobbyist can give me a $10,000 PAC check and give you a $4,600 personal contribution.'
Engel, who also voted for ethics reform, thinks the result is a 'hodgepodge of inconsistency' that has created 'artificial restrictions which are arbitrary.'
One Democratic lawmaker who has endured a tough campaign this year decided to skip the Kanye West concert when he was told of the $90 charge.
'I decided not to bother,' said the lawmaker, who asked not to be identified by name. " |

And if you dare stick your nose in the Democrats' business, they'll just call their thug police on you.
Quote : | "Lawyers for an ABC reporter and civil rights groups are demanding that Denver police drop all charges against a reporter who was arrested yesterday while trying to shoot video on a public sidewalk outside the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver.
Asa Eslocker and a camera crew were attempting to film and talk to Democratic senators and VIP donors leaving a private meeting at the hotel as part of a nightly news series on the corporate lobbyists and wealthy donors at the Democratic National Convention. Police arrested Eslocker and charged him with trespassing, failure to follow a lawful order, and interference with a police officer." |

In his own words, I think Obama explains his appeal pretty well:
Quote : | "Undoubtedbly, some of these views will get me in trouble, I am new enough on the national political screen that I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripe project their own views. As such I am bound to disappoint some, if not all of them. Which perhaps indicates a second, more intimate theme to this book - namely how I or anybody else in public office, can avoid the pitfalls of fame, the hunger to please, the fear of loss, and thereby retain that kernel of truth, that singular voice within each of us that reminds us of our deepest commitments." |
From what I heard of his acceptance speech, he maintained that path. Lets be honest, the Democrats aren't running on anything other than, "hey, we're not Republicans".8/29/2008 10:58:12 AM |

of course it is. it's the "big announcement". the news-of-the-day. the dust will settle as it always does.
but 38 million people actually watched and listened to an hour's worth of Obama -- from the supremely well-crafted biographical video (was Spielberg involved in that one, too?), to what really is being hailed as his best speech yet. the impact of that record-shattering number is immeasurable and invaluable.

i dunno, its no coincidence the dems was the highest ever and it was also carried on more stations than ever...first televised debates in 1980, only on the 3 networks...as the population grows and the number of news channels grow, the viewership will obviously grow for both conventions, and iirc bush had like 21 million in 2004

Brash McCain pick of AK Gov. Palin neutralizes historic Obama speech, stunts the Dems' convention bounce
Quote : | "UTICA, New York - Republican John McCain's surprise announcement Friday of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate - some 16 hours after Democrat Barack Obama's historic speech accepting his party's presidential nomination - has possibly stunted any Obama convention bump, the latest Zogby Interactive flash poll of the race shows.
After the McCain 'Veep' announcement on Friday, Palin was almost immediately hailed as a strong conservative, and those voters have rallied to the GOP ticket, the survey shows. Republicans gather in St. Paul, Minnesota this week to officially nominate McCain and Palin as their presidential ticket.
Overall, 52% said the selection of Palin as the GOP vice presidential nominee helps the Republican ticket, compared to 29% who said it hurt. Another 10% said it made no difference, while 10% were unsure. Among independent voters, 52% said it helps, while 26% said it would hurt. Among women, 48% said it would help, while 29% said it would hurt the GOP ticket. Among Republicans, the choice was a big hit - as 87% said it would help, and just 3% said it would hurt." |

http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_plank/archive/2008/08/29/did-palin-really-fight-the-bridge-to-nowhere.aspx
Quote : | "Did Palin Really Fight The “Bridge To Nowhere”?
Republicans have been heavily touting Sarah Palin's reformist credentials, with her supposed opposition to Alaska's "Bridge to Nowhere" as Exhibit A. But how hard did she really fight the project? Not very, it seems. Here's what she told the Anchorage Daily News on October 22, 2006, during the race for the governor's seat (via Nexis):
5. Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?
Yes. I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now--while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.
So she was very much for the bridge and insisted that Alaska had to act quickly—the party of Ted Stevens and Don Young might soon lose its majority, after all. By that point, the project was endangered for reasons that had nothing to do with Palin—the bridge had become a national laughingstock, Congress had stripped away the offending earmark, shifting the money back to the state's general fund, and future federal support seemed unlikely. True, after Palin was sworn into office that fall, her first budget didn't allocate any money for the bridge. But when the Daily News asked on December 16, 2006, if she now opposed the project, Palin demurred and said she was just trying to figure out where the bridge fit on the state's list of transportation priorities, given the lack of support from Congress. Finally, on September 19, 2007, she decided to redirect funds away from the project altogether with this sorry-sounding statement:
"Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer," said Governor Palin. "Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it's clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island," Governor Palin added. "Much of the public's attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened."
Maybe I've missed something, but it sure looks like she was fine with the bridge in principle, never had a problem with the earmarks, bristled at all the mockery, and only gave up on the project when it was clear that federal support wasn't forthcoming. Now, Charles Homans, who knows Alaska well, says Palin's anti-corruption instincts are fairly solid (she sold off the gubenatorial jet upon taking office, for one), and a casual Nexis search suggests that she's fiscally conservative (insofar as that term makes sense in a quasi-socialist state like Alaska), but this hardly looks like the "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" moment everyone's making it out to be.
P.S. Here's a piece that Palin's special counsel, John Katz, wrote in March of this year for the Juneau Empire, assuring the Alaskan public that Palin was still very much in favor of earmarks, but sadly needed to scale back her requests somewhat (to "only" 31 earmarks this year—down from 54 last year) in response to "unwanted attention" from Congress and the press.

^ That type of attack doesn't stick. It's not short and simple, and takes too much explanations to make people care. Especially with Palin having such an "honest" face, they'll have to dig deeper than that to smear her.

It can be over simplified to "she says she for reform & against the bridge to no where & it turns out she wasn't" when mixed in with the few other corruption/investigation charges floating around, inexperience, and nice quotes from her about how she hasn't really thought about Iraq before & doesn't know anything about it... with all that combined with a 24 hour news cycle to feed, I can see this getting picked up on a larger level. McCain only met her once, and she's never been vetted on the national level before, and she stands for nothing like what Hillary stands for, and things like this are just going to keep popping up. 8/30/2008 9:07:47 PM |
