I'm not sure Calipari is ready for the more rigorous academic standards of the University of Alabama.

exactly... and its not like the SEC is the WAC in football... you can still easily win it all being from the SEC so its not like he would be avoiding competition the entire season.

Would Capel really leave OU to go to UVA?

I mean I know its back home and all but isn't that a step down?

yeah that strikes me as a lateral move, and since the ACC is much more competitive than the Big 12 maybe a bad move. It was time for UVA to dump Leitao regardless though.

I don't know that Oklahoma to Virginia is a lateral move. Take away the Sampson years and Virginia's basketball history is shit. Unless they throw all kinds of money at him or he's really intent on being closer to home, I don't see why he'd make that move.

I would mention something about JPJ Arena being pretty sweet, but I'm afraid that Brass Monkey would post a 47-picture thesis paper.

i think it's kinda weird that their student section is all bleachers instead of seats

i dunno whether i like it or dislike it...kinda forces them to keep standing but i dunno

Sadly they have a seemingly competent AD and probably won't fuck up his search like Fowler did.

Would be nice to steal Spurlock though....since we've lost out on Favors/Cousins/Wall

Capel will take over at Duke.

Anthony Grant (VCU) to UVA.

Sean Miller seems like a likely candidate, but remember what happened the last time they plucked a Xavier coach? Pete Gillen was the UVA Sendek.

haha. It is a lot better than the Lloyd Noble Center. If I was Capel I'd wait for the Duke job to open up and try to get a home-and-home with Johnny Dawkins and Stanford set up so that I could try to embarrass him in front of the eyes of the Duke Athletic Administration. UVA has nice facilities and they are in the ACC, but at OU he can continue to hone his coaching at a school that doesn't care as much about basketball. Besides every year there is usually some pretty talented players in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. Also have you seen OU's incoming class? It's #8 in the nation. They have 1 5*, 3 4*'s, and 1 3*. The 3rd ranked PG in Tommy Mason-Griffin. The #5, #15, and #22 ranked centers. And the #28 SG who had offers from South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, VCU, Boston College, and Clemson (not too shabby).

The sideline student section seats behind the benches are real seats. Only the baseline seats are bleachers.

http://www.redandblack.com/media/storage/paper871/news/2009/03/26/Sports/Report.Alabama.Latest.To.Offer.Anthony.Grant-3683108.shtml

Report: Alabama latest to offer Anthony Grant
The Anthony Grant saga continued Wednesday, as an all-out bidding war has been reported to be taking place for the head basketball coach at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Alabama reportedly has offered between $2.1 and $2.4 million per year, according to a Richmond CBS affiliate.

The report also indicated VCU countered with a raise in Grant's salary that would pay over $1 million per year to stay with the Rams.

On Wednesday, Grant, and his wife Christina, flew to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to meet with Alabama officials, and to take a campus tour. The meeting marked the second time the two parties have met, the first occurring Sunday in Virginia, the report said. Grant has been rumored to be a top candidate for jobs at Alabama, Georgia and Virginia. It was reported Georgia offered Grant on Sunday, but University officials quickly denied any such offer.

In addition, the Birmingham News' Kevin Scarbinsky reported that Parker Executive Search, the search firm Georgia hired to tap into potential coaching candidates, did something that turned Grant away from coaching the Bulldogs.

There are still candidates competing in the NCAA tournament that Georgia may target.

Mike Anderson at Missouri has declined to comment on the vacancies at Georgia and Alabama, opting to focus on tonight's Sweet 16 match up with Memphis. Sean Miller at Xavier, Pittsburgh's Jamie Dixon and Villanova coach Jay Wright each have been classified as long-shot type hires for the Bulldogs. Others outside of those remaining in the NCAA tournament rumored to be targets are Frank Haith at Miami, Oliver Purnell at Clemson and Dayton's Brian Gregory.

Haha why would Dixon and Wright leave the best conference Big East to coach at Georgia or Alabama?

Or Haith or Purnell leaving the ACC? Those are steps down.

well the obvious answer is because the SEC is much weaker and thus easier to win, plus it's not like you can't get an at-large bid in the SEC. Also, it looks like they're offering a kings ransom to come coach there, and we all know how much coaches love money. I don't really think it would be a step down for Haith or Purnell, just because you're in the ACC doesn't mean you have the best you could have (especially if you're at Miami or Clemson).

nah it has legs

apparently UK ppl are claiming that BG is going to be fired and that State has made talk with BG and his ppl about coming here and that we are "very interested" in what happens at UK.

***what id love to be the case is that Lowe got word of the firing and has asked permission to talk with BGs commits in case they wanna change their LOI, Daniel Orton the #3 Center would be a HUGEEEE 5* pickup IF he does get fired.***

i'm saying coaches in their prime who are doing well don't take steps down so that it's easier to win their conference.

just because you're going to a shittier conference doesn't mean you're taking a step down, Miami, Clemson, South Florida, etc. are in good conferences but by no measure are they prime jobs...some coaches want to play against the best competition others not so much, look at Calipari

Gillispie is cancer? You are out of your mind. He's a winner and does it cleanly.

I think the pressure of Kentucky was too much for him. He was 40-27 in 2 years not really that terrible for what he has to work with.

I think Kentucky's athletics department has done a good job of spinning it as such, and the media has totally bought it. It makes them look much less like the impatient assholes with a sense of entitlement they are...frankly our athletics department could learn a lesson or two from them. This is pretty much all about wins and losses.

Gillispie would be great at NC State.

But you guys know what's gonna happen. We won't fire Lowe, sometime next season (say Feb/Mar) Gillispie will take a job at a school where a coach has been informed he won't be retained at the end of the season, we'll fire Lowe at the end of our season, and then hire someone like the coach of Cleveland State.

In 4 years, we will repeat the same scenario, as we'll have 2 NIT wins under our belt, and 2 losing seasons. Gillispie will have a Sweet 16 and 2 other NCAA appearances at a place that is just happy to make the tournament.
