these are pretty sexy too if they make it to the market at that anticipated price

Dell has the Vostro A90 (a black Mini 9) for $200 currently
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-vostro-a90?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd
if it had a longer battery life and wouldn't take a month to get here i'd have got it
as it is, i ended up getting tired of waiting and grabbed a EEE PC 901 of amazon 4/19/2009 9:50:07 AM |

i don't understand dell.
if you're ordering a whole new computer, mini9 or vostro, you can get a 32g ssd and 9 cell battery (allegedly, i have yet to find where you can upgrade to the better battery even though they advertise it on the page)...but you can't just order one by itself. you can get a 16g ssd or another 4 cell battery. 4/22/2009 3:31:50 PM |

^^i would much rather have my 160GB hdd with my Samsung than a 8-16 GB ssd. I still want to be able to watch movies/music and store photos on it. I would be horribly limited with only 8GBs of storage. 4/25/2009 12:37:29 AM |

also good luck dual-booting OS' or even installing a full Vista/W7 install on one of those tiny SSDs

^oh yeah, xp and win7 on mine too. no way doing that with an 8 GB ssd. I have a 6-cell 5-7 hour battery anyway, and the ssd doesn't' provide THAT much battery savings. 4/25/2009 6:43:43 AM |
Str8BacardiL ************ 41753 Posts user info edit post |
I have read up on SSDs and basically the main benefit so far is less likelihood of mechanical failure. This sounds very appealing because I have never had a laptop that has not required a HDD replacement at some point but still not enough to trade in 152 or 144 gigabytes for.
No one is saying power consumption is lower, just that the computer runs quieter.
I was thinking about how SSDs will probably rapidly develop in to large capacity the same way flash memory has and my notebook would become worthless in a year due to the SSD inside not having enough storage. 4/25/2009 8:39:28 AM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
I can't hear my hdd unless i'm really close and in a quiet room. But yeah i didn't want to buy a ssd if the capacity in the next year or so will make mine worthless. 4/25/2009 12:55:10 PM |

W7 can be installed in that amount of space but honestly it's going to grow to take up a lot of that space unless you want to google around in the forums and learn all the specific files/settings to remove/change to reduce OS footprint

The 901 EEEPC series has a problem with battery shelf life. Fully charged, it will run a good 4 hours of use. Put it on away, turned off, and it will run itself dead in under 7 days. If you plan to use it unplugged, plan ahead and leave it plugged in the night before. 5/19/2009 1:41:22 PM |

is the intel moorestown slated to be a netbook proc? i know they're talking about it using 10% the power of the atom (.2w vs 2w)...add to that DDR3, HD graphics, SATA, USB, and PCIe and it looks like a damn nice chip for a netbook (especially since the chip is supposed to be 1/4? the size of the atom)
i know LG has already said they're making a smartphone with the new chip 5/19/2009 2:27:09 PM |

Dell Mini 9, OSX 10.5.7, 1GB RAM, 16 GB SDD and 16 GB SDHC card
Everything works perfectly with the OS, even webcam and audio. Can play .wmv and .mov videos that are 960x540 with no problem. Probably won't even make the $28 upgrade for 2GB of RAM. 5/31/2009 2:00:56 PM |

Personally, I'm waiting for the new generation of netbooks that will come with the Nvidia ION graphics...
It would do a netbook some good since my netbook is used for some video streaming and a little bit of on-the-road flash gaming. Which, sux0rz on intel graphics.

Just picked up one of the new Acer Aspire One 751H's with the 11.6" screen. Still need to wipe Vista off and install Win7 but just getting rid of the bullshit McAfee made a HUGE improvement. I wasn't too sure about the 1.3 processor but so far it's running great. Keyboard is full size too but it's the chicklet style keys that are completely flat instead of having the raised keys. Still getting used to that part. 250gb hdd, 2gb RAM, 1366x768 and still small/light enough to make it worth carrying around. 6/9/2009 8:55:50 PM |

Well, took the 751h back. Loaded Win7 on it and had some issues on resume where it would display the full desktop. Sucks though, it was pretty nice otherwise. Vista was too slow to keep on it or I would have kept it around.

this may be answered somewhere in the 6 pages but for the sake of my sanity, i'm going to ask
i just got the hp netbook through verizon. i'd like to get an external dvd player to use with it as i travel a lot and it would be nice to have that flexability
OR should i get an external HD and just rip my dvds to it? my only concern there is that i'd rip them to my mac, put them on the hd then use them on the netbook. i know in the past when i hook up a new external hd to my mac, it asks me how i want to configure it (mac or pc)
would the back and forth cause any problems? i wouldn't mind the time spent ripping the dvds to an external hd, plus its more versatile than a portable external dvd player
help me figure it out! 6/16/2009 12:00:44 PM |

without 3rd party software - fat32 is your only option - shouldn't be a problem as long as you are ripping and compressing because fat32 has a 4gb file size limit - it doesn't make a lot of sense to store a 1:1 image copy of the dvd on your hdd anyways unless you are wanting a true backup 6/16/2009 12:12:08 PM |
