Well more take advantage of the ringing multiple phones option. I only have one phone now. With the blackberry I'll have two and I can have my gvoice number ring either phone depending on what time of day it is. Or something like that.
Although it might be a pain having to carry two phones around. Might try to consolidate into one. 10/24/2010 8:41:05 PM |

Full integration with Sprint ... coming soon.
If I'm reading that correctly, they would like to, or are planning to, integrate with other carriers soon.

http://googlevoiceblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/sprint-integrates-google-voice.html
Quote : | "Sprint integrates Google Voice Monday, March 21, 2011 | 5:00 AM Over time, we've worked to bring an integrated Google Voice experience to your mobile device by building mobile apps, introducing Google Voice Lite, and most recently Number Porting. But we felt that ultimately, the most simple solution would be to partner with carriers to seamlessly integrate Google Voice with your mobile phone.
Today, we’d like to share that we’ve teamed up with Sprint to do just that.
First, Sprint customers will be able to use their existing Sprint mobile number as their Google Voice number and have it ring multiple other phones simultaneously. So now, calls to your Sprint mobile number can easily be answered from your office or your home phone, or even your computer through Gmail. Calls from Gmail and text messages sent from google.com/voice will also display your Sprint number. This basically gives Sprint customers all the benefits of Google Voice without the need to change or port their number.
Alternatively, Google Voice users can choose to replace their Sprint number with their Google Voice number when placing calls or sending text messages from their Sprint handset. This feature works on all Sprint phones and gives Sprint users all the benefits of Google Voice without the need for an app.
In both cases, Google Voice replaces Sprint voicemail, giving Sprint customers transcribed voicemail messages available online and sent via email and/or text message. International calls made from Google Voice users’ Sprint phones will be connected by Google Voice at our very low rates, and Sprint customers will also have access to the rest of Google Voice’s features, like creating personalized voicemail greetings based on who’s calling, call recording, blocking unwanted callers and more.
To learn more, watch the video below and visit google.com/voice/sprint.
This feature will be available soon to Sprint customers in the United States. Once it is launched, it will be rolled out gradually to all Google Voice users, and can be enabled through the Google Voice website. If you don’t see it right away, don’t worry—you can leave your email address at google.com/voice/sprint and we’ll notify you as soon as this becomes available.
In addition, today we’re introducing the Nexus S 4G for Sprint—which takes advantage of Sprint’s high-speed 4G data network and lets you enable Google Voice directly from the mobile app. Learn more on the Google Mobile Blog.

When I'm in an area with poor signal and someone calls my GV number there is a noticable VoIP delay. So I'll usually call back or have them call my direct cell number. I don't exactly know how I feel about the Sprintegration for anything other than google voicemail at this point. 3/22/2011 11:19:16 AM |

On what app? Google voice isn't a mobile VOIP app. I think it's possible to make it one but the standard iPhone/Android Gvoice app isn't VOIP. When someone calls your GV number it just uses your GV number but redirects and still uses your standard cellular minutes.3/22/2011 11:48:51 AM |

I don't know the exact path your phone calls take with respect to PSTN, but I'm sure VoIP is a primary factor in the equation. It may just be coincidental that when I'm without signal there's noticeable latency. 3/22/2011 12:20:21 PM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
Good point. I don't know how that works. I just assumed when someone calls your GV number it just forwards it to your regular phone number, hence using your minutes and not data. Alternately when I use an actual VOIP app like Skype the quality is poor and there's latency issues when data reception is poor. 3/22/2011 12:42:34 PM |

yeah gv has noticeable delays for me as well...my friends have started to think i'm retarded i think. it's like that 1 second pause that makes things awkward if any of you saw SNL recently...so i try to time my response at the end of whatever they're saying so it starts instantly for them haha
i am wary of sprintegration for my own selfish reasons i guess - i have gvoice on my fave 3 so all my calls are free right now. if i sprintegrate, i doubt that will be the case any longer - they wouldn't be that stupid. 3/26/2011 10:31:51 AM |

I'd be willing to bet that Sprint will take the Voicemail/Caller management features of GVoice and not the actual VOIP aspect. I guess I could be wrong. 3/26/2011 1:30:44 PM |

GV has been on my fav3 for a while, but it just wasn't worth it to me. For one you could never be roaming or it wouldn't count and you have to give up caller ID if you want free incoming. At least that's how it was on my TP2 using Magicall.
I will like being able to send and receive SMS online with my sprint number though. 3/26/2011 5:05:27 PM |

Has anyone's google voice been way too slow with notifications? I kept email notificatins on, and get those instantly, but the app doesn't notify me for hours after the fact 4/4/2011 12:48:20 PM |
dFshadow All American 9507 Posts user info edit post |
mine's actually the fucking opposite (android) - i've turned off inbox sync in the settings and gone to SMS notifications because i like the interface i have on GoSMS Pro but the app refuses to stop notifying me. it pops up notifications in GVoice at the same time the SMS comes in. It's damn annoying. I know I can turn off the notification but that doesn't mean it isn't wasting my battery by keeping the inbox in sync... 4/4/2011 2:12:47 PM |

Does Voice sometimes not even forward to yalls phones? I dunno if its a GVoice setting (I have it set to forward calls to my 1. cellphone and 2. Google Chat) or an Android setting (I have Voice unchecked in Advanced Task Killer...although I think the forwarding should be independent of that)
When I just tried to call my GV number a couple times from a landline, not once did it ring my cellphone. It did give me a transcription of a voicemail I left on Google Chat, but no incoming calls.
Any ideas? 4/19/2011 12:03:13 PM |

why are you using a task killer? But as you said, the actual forwarding part of google voice is independent of the app. You don't even need the app installed for that.] 4/19/2011 12:08:47 PM |

I doubt that'll fix it but it's probably a good idea to get rid of it anyway. A lot of those apps that it's killing will just restart themselves back up anyways, so killing them over and over will have more of an impact on battery life than just leaving them running and letting Android manage the memory itself. 4/19/2011 1:08:35 PM |

Do we know yet if keeping Sprint number and taking advantage of google features will force us to use their SIP trunking methods? As I said before, I do not like when people dial my GV number because of the annoying delay.

Quote : | "Hello,
You have been invited to start enjoying the benefits of the Sprint integration before anyone else! We are interested in your feedback as we roll this out to the entire user base and have listed a link to a form where you can send feedback and/or questions.
There are two ways to enable the integrated service:
1. Option 1: Keep your Sprint number (all the benefits of porting without the need to). In this case, your Sprint number becomes your Google Voice number so that when people call your Sprint mobile number, it rings all the phones you want.
How to enable this: click on the "change/port" link next to your GV # in the settings page, choose the option to use your existing number, enter your Sprint number and select the Sprint option.
2. Option 2: Replace your Sprint number with your Google Voice number (all the benefits of the app without the need for one). In this case, all calls made from your Sprint phone will display your Google Voice # natively (same for SMS).
How to enable this: click on the "enable Google Voice on your Sprint phone" link next to your Sprint forwarding phone. If the link does not show, click on edit and use the link to verify whether your phone is eligible.
In both cases, Google Voice replaces Sprint voicemail (pressing one on your phone links you to your Google Voicemail) and international calls made from the Sprint phone will be connected by Google Voice. Integrating your account with Sprint means you will still get the benefits of Any Mobile Any Time if that is included in your service plan.
Important Notes:
The integrated service only works with a valid Sprint mobile number. For this early release, Sprint support channels will not be available for support, including Sprint Retail Stores, Sprint Customer Care, Sprint Telesales, Sprint Direct Sales Reps, etc. If you need support, or have feedback, please fill out this form If you use the Google Voice app on Android, you will need to log out and log back in to make sure the app stops using call interception.
Thanks,
Vincent Paquet, on behalf of the Google Voice team

Quote : | "Our next (and final) trick for the night had Jerry sending me a picture message to see if Google Voice would show a blank message. What we discovered, however, is that if you're receiving a MMS, the message bypasses Google Voice altogether and goes straight to the stock app. I sent him a reply (also from the stock app) and he received it, all from the one number I'm now using.
All in all, I've got to say I'm very impressed with the entire Sprint + Google Voice deal. Google Voice works just as well as it did before, but only having to use one number and getting to receive MMS just makes the deal all the sweeter.
So set your clocks folks, and hide yours kids, hide your wife, because come April 26th, we portin' everybody (well, Sprint users) out here." |
