I wonder if they'd take my blood since I've been living overseas for so long now.

They wouldn't let me give today. Instead, they gave me a bunch of cookies and a physician referral note because my hemoglobin was low: 10.5.

Apparently this whole pescetarian for Lent thing was a bad idea.

I used to give blood all the time. And I would always piss them off by passing out at the end of the cycle

^ It expires so wouldn't do you much good.

^^What do you do to get it up?
(ehe)

I was gonna donate on the 7th.

Then I sliced an artery and had stitches and...yes. It just didn't seem like the smartest idea to give platelets the next day

^ LOL Yeah, I'd hold off if I were you. Probably need a couple of months to regenerate blood.

I suppose just more steak. If it's bad next time I try to donate, then I'll see a doctor because it could be indicative of other probs.

You should also be eating lentils and spinach, adding blackstrap molasses to stuff and snacking on pumpkin seeds

Not high enough to donate != indicative of a problem - ESPECIALLY if you're always close. That threshold is set pretty high - so high that you can donate more than you do, and maintain medically adequate hemoglobin.

To be fair, it was an artery in my finger, so it wasn't a fuckton of blood that'll take a long time to regenerate. But it is totally me to cut two fingers, and manage to get an artery in one. Seriously. The doctor joked that maybe I should look into rubber bumpers.

Well, last time I tried, my hemoglobin was at 9. I've been taking supplements like crazy and I started eating meat and lentils again, and my levels still won't get above 10.5.

^^ Same here. Apparently I went to a region of Costa Rica that's malaria-ridden. They rejected me the last time for travel and I can't donate again until next April.

yea same. it was the malaria thing. had i just stayed in the cities i would have been fine but since i went outside of them into heavy malaria areas i can't donate until Feb.

sad. i didn't even really think about it until i got there and was like "oh crap i have travelled this year"

then it was all good until she asked if i went outside the city

i feel bad because i like to donate semi regularly (every few months) but at the same time.....my trip was totally awesome and it was worth going into malaria - ville

i even ate lots of spinach for lunch today though in hopes i wouldn't get cut for being anemic (cause that has happened before) but i didn't even make it that far haha

Yeah, I read that like 9 posts up.

It would seem as if the red cross would have a test they could administer to bypass that
though, I guess it might be hard to do in the field.

[Edited on December 3, 2010 at 11:22 PM. Reason : an ex of mine couldn't donate cause she used to live in Germany.]

^^ well i guess malaria can lie dormant for awhile or something?

i mean, a year seems like a long time though. 6 months seems like plenty but i guess it isn't.

welp

hope i don't come down with malaria in the next 2 months

^ truth.

Surely, this type of situation is completely avoided by asking a question to the donor, and relying on them to tell the truth.

man, get the fuck outta here.

Bttt

What's the best thing to eat after giving blood? They give cookies, but is fruit a better choice? Are there more benefits to eating cookies over other foods?

Anything with sugar. They give you cookies because they're cheaper than fruit and most of fat ass America would take a cookie over an apple everytime.

I tried to give platelets last fall. I was all excited, took calcium vitamins etc. and then I get there and they wouldn't let me because my veins are too small and the machine probably wouldn't have worked with them.

I give blood all the time and didn't think giving platelets would be too harsh on my body but it was a no go they said.

It made me very sad. My mom was in chemo at the time and had needed platelets, (throughout her chemo she needed platelets like 4 times) and even though we are two different blood types I still wanted to give into the system for her. But I couldn't That was a very sad day for me.

If you can give platelets, please do. There are people like my mommy out there suffering,
