There's no way you could say second-hand smoke isn't harmful."

You're right. But I will say that second-hand smoke isn't as harmful as most people think.

From the other thread:

Quote :
"the studies on secondhand smoke from Red Cross and American Lung Association site incessantly was actually thrown out because of a lack of firm evidence.

the results of the environmental tobacco smoke and tobacco related mortality in a prospective study of Californians do not support a causal relation between environmental tobacco smoke and tobacco related mortality, although they do not rule out a small effect and the association between exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and coronary heart disease and lung cancer may be considerably weaker than generally believed."

On the whole, the majority of smokers in this area don't give a fuck who is in the building when they puff up. To me, that's a shitty asshole. I don't expect you to understand this.

I seem to have missed the section in the constitution that allows for trampling the rights of the minority in favor of the majority. Could you point that out for me? K thx

Edit: FYI, the minority I'm referring to are the business owners being told what they can or can not allow on their private property. Not the smokers themselves. Thought I'd clear that up.

"but with no money to enforce the law and two citations required before even a tiny fine can be issued"

Yeah at 200 bucks a violation (and from what I can tell from reading the bill, you can only be hit with one violation per day) they're not going to collect enough money to bother enforcing this unless someone really raises a stink. I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of bars say fuck it and allow smoking. It would only take a fractional increase in patronage for them to recoup the penalty everyday.

Does the National Cancer Institute count as legit science

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Tobacco/ETS#r2

Quote :
"# Does exposure to secondhand smoke cause cancer?

Yes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP), the U.S. Surgeon General, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have classified secondhand smoke as a known human carcinogen (cancer-causing agent) (1, 3, 5).

Inhaling secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in nonsmoking adults (4). Approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths occur each year among adult nonsmokers in the United States as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke (2). The Surgeon General estimates that living with a smoker increases a nonsmoker’s chances of developing lung cancer by 20 to 30 percent (4).

Some research suggests that secondhand smoke may increase the risk of breast cancer, nasal sinus cavity cancer, and nasopharyngeal cancer in adults, and leukemia, lymphoma, and brain tumors in children (4). Additional research is needed to learn whether a link exists between secondhand smoke exposure and these cancers. "

For the millionth time, your rights aren't being trampled. YOU AREN'T BEING PREVENTED FROM SMOKING IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO WHERE YOU WANT TO PARTY AND DRINK AND BE SOCIAL, OR EAT, ETC. You just can't continue to do it in a fashion that harms those that don't smoke.

Quote :
"you sure think a lot of yourself."

Well, I know I've never lit up and smoked in an area where someone doesnt' smoke is. That puts me ahead of most smokers

Quote :
"i would like to see the statistics on this "majority of smokers" you speak of]"

What are you talking about? Just walk in to your average bar, most people that smoke will light up at one point during their time out, especially when it is cold.

Quote :
"Smokers are much better tippers than non-smokers. This I know first-hand."

Is it because you're more social with smokes since you're enfatuated with all things hipster? Dude, you guys are so cool, with the way you take drags off your cigs. Man you're rebels....Dude, we like you, you're a fun waiter, let me tip you more.

Which study, they don't reference the EPA, they reference

Quote :
"U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke: A Report of the Surgeon General. Rockville, MD: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Coordinating Center for Health Promotion, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Office on Smoking and Health, 2006."

Maybe those studies reference the EPA, I'm not bothering to dig that deeply.

Quote :
"I'm not a waiter."

I give two shits not about what you do. I find it mildly hard to believe smokers in general would be better tippers. The point still stands, you're probably just more open to smokers in your line of work because you think they are so cool (while oddly being too pussy to smoke yourself) and thus they tip you better.

Wow, are you that dumb? They mention the EPA because they classify cig smoke as a carcinogen. Then they site other sources about second hand smoke.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of the claims haven't been exaggerated in the name of public health (like begonias is suggesting).

Pretty lame since it just undermines the truth, which is that second-hand smoke is harmful.

It's kinda like the global warming research. We're all gonna be wiped out by hurricanes and volcanoes by 2011 if we don't ride bikes!

IF I WANT TO PUNCH BABIES ON PRIVATE PROPERTY I CAN DO IT, OK

THIS IS AMERICA

WHERE LAWS DO NOT EXTEND TO PRIVATE PROPERTY

AND SOCIETY DOES NOT DICTATE SOCIAL NORMS

BASICALLY AMERICA IS THE STREETS AND HIGHWAYS I DRIVE ON

MAYBE SOME GOVERNMENT OWNED FIELDS, TOO, DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE

BUT WHEN I PULL IN MY GARAGE I'M ALLOWED TO PUNCH BABIES AND SMOKE AS MUCH CRACK AS I WANT

THAT'S FREEDOM MOTHERFUCKER

THAT'S WHAT AMERICA'S ABOUT

STREETS THAT MY TAXES PAY FOR

NOT LEGISLATED INCONVENIENCE

^ Yeah, you're retarded.

We're talking about something that is legal to do virtually everywhere else. Furthermore, this law doesn't criminalize smoking indoors. Punching a baby would definitely be a criminal act.

btw it's worth pointing out the only people bent on discussing how "cool" smoking is perceived to be are not smokers

smokers don't give a fuck if it looks cool or not and often realize that people judge them for doing it. they have their own reasons for engaging in the habit

If the owner is that hard up to allow smoking, he can become a cigar bar or a "private" club that charges $1 membership. That's what they've been doing in King County since their smoking ban was passed.
