^ I hate that philosophy. It boils down to winning championships. The fact that you not only reward regular season finishes, but the top 3 is crazy to me.
I'm from the old school where you fail if you don't win the trophy. Walking away with the best regular season finish and no trophy means YOU LOSE, not "hooray, I was 13-0 and lost 1st round, show me the money!" Even worse: "I was the THIRD best person in my league during the regular season AND lost 1st round AND STILL GET PAID! GAH! That makes me furious just thinking about it.
Different strokes, I guess. 8/27/2010 12:15:20 PM |

Fantasy isn't like real sports where you "gear up" for the playoffs.
A 13-0 team who dominated all year shouldn't lose out to some 7-6 team just because everyone on their roster went nuts that week.
Reward consistent excellence, not fluke overachievers. 8/27/2010 12:18:43 PM |

its a week where your points dont matter, and is usually on week 15, which is the last week a lot of playoff teams play their starters. The points are wasted because you cant use them, and while you could have a shit week, you could also have a great week all for nothing. 8/27/2010 1:29:10 PM |

lol, then please ask most of the recent NFL, MLB and NCAA champions to give their trophies back. Most weren't favored nor were they expected to make it there.
Also, I disagree with the idea that in fantasy sports you aren't gearing up for the playoffs. Maybe not with every pick in the draft, but I absolutely look at who my Studs play in the playoffs and manipulate my roster based off of who has the best matchups when it counts.
Finally, for the most part, I play in uber competitive leagues where everyone thinks this way, not just me. When I play in TWW money leagues, no one else seems to think that way, which is part of the reason I'm the back to back champ. (hooraay me)
To each his own, but the idea of no rewarding the flukeiness out of the playoffs defeats entire purpose of playoffs themselves in my opinion. Why even have them then? 8/27/2010 1:35:11 PM |

Only because most commoners want them.
If it were up to me, we would have no playoffs, no head to head matchups...just a cumalative season long point total. 8/27/2010 1:51:22 PM |

I still don't see how they are wasted...so your team goes off for 200 points...you still go to the second round in either scenario
whereas if your team only scores 50 pts that week, you still go to the second round with the bye, but you'd be out if you didn't have it....It can only work in your favor.

you got lucky as hell in that championship game (and its not a tww league for the most part, just alot of people not very well versed in fantasy)

that sucks all the week to week fun out of it. now I could get with a bonus prize a the end of the year for highest pt total.

I'm just sick of the randomness of it all. Having the 2nd best weekly total and still losing, having the most points for the season and still finishing third, getting beaten a field goal in the MNF game, etc.
I'd rather reward the teams that consistently put up strong numbers, not the ones who just lucked into victories. 8/27/2010 1:55:43 PM |

^^ No different than in the real world. Patriots were undefeated a few years ago, got upended in the Superbowl by a team with a lesser record. If you just gave the championship to the team with the most wins every year, then most of the Superbowl champs would be very different in the last 10 years. Same with every other sport at that.
Yeah it sucks when your stud RB goes down in the playoffs, but that happens in the real world. I don't think I would want to play in a league with no playoffs, it keeps thing interesting. I mean otherwise you might have a team 2-3 games ahead and the rest of the league might as well not play the last 2-3 weeks. And this is coming from someone who regularly has the most wins in the regular season in my leagues just to go into the playoffs and have a rough week or some player on the other team erupts for 30+ points. 8/27/2010 3:57:41 PM |

I get beat as a high seed in the playoffs more often than I upset a higher seeded player, but the best example I can think of is Stock Car Challenge on ESPN. It goes off of points for the entire year. Once you get down so many points you just say "fuck it" and it ends up with 2 people in the group paying any attention at the end. It cant be any fun to win if you brag about it and most of the league thinks "oh, I stopped paying attention to that shit 2 months ago."
but I would equate winning the regular season more to college basektball - conference championship/conference tourny champion than NFL playoffs.

Any input on the Ryan Mathews question? When would you think would be too early to draft him in a 10 team keeper league? 8/27/2010 4:54:47 PM |
Panthro All American 7333 Posts user info edit post |
with keeper leagues, that depends on who is being kept. He's going to be a really valuable player and he's a rookie, potentially opening the door for you to "keep" him for many years to come if he performs.
Take him early before someone else does. 8/27/2010 5:01:37 PM |

On the San Diego topic, Naanee. He seems poised to jump into that #2 slot now that the possibility of VJ being back is extremely slim. Any fantasy value in the 15 or 16th round? Rivers seems to trust him from what I've read... 8/28/2010 12:23:47 PM |

I've got the #3 pick in a traditional 12 team snake draft. A couple questions as far as strategy:
MJD or Ray Rice (not a PPR league) 2nd round, not set on another RB, WR, or QB, depends on if Fitzgerald, Moss, Andre Johnson are snatched up (or maybe Brees) Would Ryan Mathews bee too much of a reach for an early 3rd round pick? I feel like he is going to get fed the ball alot (they will run the ball more like a couple years ago), and he will get the goal line carries. I doubt he lasts to the late 4th. Obviously will have to see how the draft plays out, but what are your thoughts? 8/28/2010 2:03:21 PM |
DROD900 All American 24658 Posts user info edit post |
I would go with MJD with the 3rd pick, I would definitely target a WR or QB in the 2nd round, it all depends on who is available and who has the best value. I wouldnt necessarily say that Fitzgerald is going to be the best WR available even if he falls to you in the 2nd round - he has an injury that could linger and a terrible QB situation. If Mathews is still around in the 3rd round, I dont think it would be a reach to take him, he should have a great year. Now if a top tier QB or WR is still there, I would take them instead of Mathews, but a case could be made for either option.
Here is a draft that I just finished up for a league I'm the defending champion of. Its a 12 team non-keeper league, snake style draft, I had the 6th pick (Ray Rice fell to me with the 6th pick). There are a bunch of twwers in this league. A few league settings to keep in mind: Passing/Rushing/Receiving TDs are worth 6 pts, completions and rush attempts are 0.1 pt, receptions are 0.5 pt, 1pt/50 yards passing, 1pt/20 yards rush/recieve, 1pt/30 yards returning for WR or RB (return points dont count towards defense). How did I do??
QB - Matt Schaub RB - Ray Rice RB - Cedric Benson WR - Brandon Marshall WR - Parcy Harvin WR - Malcolm Floyd TE - Brent Celek K - Ryan Longwell DEF - Philly BN - Dez Bryant, Michael Bush, Tim Hightower, Jacoby Jones, Nate Burleson, Dexter McCluster 8/28/2010 2:50:46 PM |

I know that this is a weak question since it is regarding kickers, a position that once again, I know doesn't really matter much at all in terms of fantasy football, but never the less, who would you rather have:
Lawrence Tynes, NYG K
-or-
Matt Prater, Den K
This is for anybody that wishes to respond. 8/28/2010 4:15:55 PM |
Panthro All American 7333 Posts user info edit post |
Doesn't matter. Take kickers who have late bye weeks (8, 9 and 10) so you dont have to worry about them. This also gives you ample time to make other moves on your roster without having to think about a worthless kicker.

^^^^ I too would take MJD over Rice in a non-PPR league. MJD is guaranteed to get all the goal line carries while Rice has to compete with McGahee. If the league is standard scoring try to get a RB or WR before a QB in the second round unless Aaron Rodgers is available (and maybe Drew Brees or Peyton Manning).
^^^ That is a very good team....better than my 12 team snake draft I think. You got a good defense and the bench is solid...only concern would be RB depth but thats a small concern.
^^ like the Guru said, K should be your last concern. You can always pick up a kicker when necessary based on the matchup and get some points. If I had to choose though I would take Tynes because he is in a more prolific offense...hence more field goals and extra points. 8/28/2010 5:23:01 PM |

Who to start week1? (two of the mix below for my RB2 & flex)
barely in J. Stewart @ NYG M. Crabtree @ Sea
barely out R. Bush v. Min C. Williams v. Cle
second tier T. Houshmandzadeh v. SF S. Breaston @ StL H. Ward v. Atl
Not sure about this, but it seems like there will be better weeks to play bush (Min has #1 Run Defense). But then again, I am not sold on the Panthers offense much less JStew's # of touches after missing preseason. While I'm at it, Crabtree is the same: may not play until wk1 and I'm not sold on SFs passing game either... Not sold on Bucs offense, but Caddy could surprise.
StL has a horrible pass D, but the QB situation in Ariz in whack. Housh needs to put up a few decent games to change my impression of him from last year. No Big Ben = no starting Ward.

You dont need a backup TE unless Celek gets injured or Philly has a bye week. So, I'd drop Carlson and pick up McCluster if you get points for return yards, if not, I might grab Donald Brown.
