BJCaudill21, your assumption is correct. Maybe somebody will give you advice on what to buy first as a human. I'd get free running if I was a fireman. Just axe zombies and then get to safety. But I'm probably playing the game wrong.

I log in with my second character for the first time in a few days, and see the building I'm in has a dozen zombies and no living humans, so I died...

...I am reading through the wall of text of what happened, and realize the suburb just started to be overrun the day before, I get the the last message about nearby groaning and it is 2 minutes old...and I am still alive.

You should find a building where you can barricaded building to hide out in until you can build yourself up, I'd say
Gain some experience by attacking zombies, and healing people with First Aid Kits (get these in hospitals)

I'm holed up in Holly Crescent, infected and only have 6hp. Barricades came down at the Copeland building so I closed the doors and got the cades back up to very strong. Couldn't do anything about the one zombie that had already gotten in though. EMCE you're probably about to get eaten.
