Heh. Reading msn's QA/Money forms always amuse me.
Quote : | "They tell me that because I’m young I can be more aggressive with my retirement funds to make them grow. But no matter what these folks say, I think the emperor has no clothes: The stock market is one big gambling venture and we’ve all been scammed into believing otherwise. Frankly, I feel like I’m risking all of my retirement funds by leaving them in the market. (Remember the Reagan-era bust? The dot-com bust? The housing market bust?) Though the stock market seems to be the only game in town (CD rates are 2% or lower, real estate is still risky, who can afford gold?), and those invested in the game tell me I’d be foolish not to play" |

^^ while i think money can be made rather easily in the stock market, it is indeed a crap shoot in a lot of sectors. with the volume/frequency stocks are traded, the tech sector is a load of shit and we're heading to a .com boom 2.0. facebook "valued" at 75 billion? groupon turned down a 6 billion buy out? where the fuck are these valuations coming from? it's certainly not earning power. hedge funds don't understand tech stocks as exhibited by apple's performance over the last 3 weeks. it damn sure isn't guaranteed money. that said, i have a hard time /not/ making money but I invest in areas i have highly specialized knowledge in. 3/8/2011 5:42:11 PM |

Right on brother, you open up that hedge fund yourself and be a rich man. Probably just started trading at some point post housing crash and think yourself a genius huh?3/8/2011 6:15:57 PM |

no, i've invested since high school. I just recently had enough cash to invest with any kind of volume, though. i won't say i have insider info but i certainly have access to a lot of information the general public does not when it comes to the tech sector, based on what I do. i did rebuild my aunt's retirement from 08-09 mid-housing crash. i invested in the data center tech i identified as being in position to cash in on downsizing/cost cutting in IT 3/8/2011 6:37:36 PM |

vmware, netapp, a little in citrix but then quickly out when their management decided to go to that retarded licensing model, were the real money makers. 3par several months before the bidding war. basically large scale virtualization enablers that have a product offering and management that's above the competition. citrix tech could crush the market if they could get their management together. 3/8/2011 9:34:47 PM |

Anyone buying any nuclear stocks today? I figure they will recover once media switches focus to something else.
CCJ, SHAW might be good candidates.
HIT is interesting, and could be a good play, but depends on how much business they'll lose given that they are physically based in Japan, and what the future holds for nuclear energy in japan. 3/14/2011 4:42:38 PM |

I thought about it. USEC(USU) was down 11%. Definitely looked into Hitachi was well with as much as they fell and the fact that they are very far along in a joint venture with GE to get a new ESBWR reactor licensed

I've been thinking about some UNG off and on for a couple months now on the idea that...it just can't go lower...and if the Fed keeps driving up asset prices people will start looking at NG again as a place for energy relief. It went up 100% on the nuke plant issues. 3/14/2011 5:24:55 PM |

Today I just picked up some EWJ and bought back the TM shares that were called away at $85 last month for $81.55. Closed a ton of calls too. 3/14/2011 6:03:17 PM |

just picked up 46 shares of HIT at 49.78
I started trying to buy it at 48.50, and it was moving up so fast that I couldn't catch it with a limit order in time, so put in a market order when yahoo real-time said it was 49.95, and my order was filled a few minutes later at 49.78. For once doing a market order worked out in my favor, but I don't recommend it in general, and this is one of the rare times I did it.
5 minutes later, it's up over 50. Not sure how long I'll keep it. If I have enough time to research the company, and it looks good long term I'll hold for a while. Otherwise I'll cash out at 10%. 3/15/2011 3:21:25 PM |

^ I just picked up some shares at 50.07 and immediately sold $50 calls on all of it for this Friday at $1.20.
2% in 4 days is good enough for me and if I keep it my bottom line is down to 48.87. 3/15/2011 4:00:57 PM |

I chuckled at this:
Quote : | "The Warren Buffett And Anne Hathaway Trade
Dan Mirvish over at Huffington Post spotted the following unusual data blip: Whenever Anne Hathaway's name appeared with any regularity in news stories, Berkshire Hathaway A shares rose in value.
...
Alloway points to the following, from the Financial Times this January:
"So-called 'machine readable news' services, such as the new Thomson Reuters product, have grown up in parallel with the emergence of high-frequency and algorithmic trading, which depend on lightning-fast delivery of data and news to traders specialising in such computer-driven trading strategies. Machine readable news systems use computers to "scrub" thousands of breaking news stories, prioritising their relevance for traders—often based on simple key words—and delivering them in a special feed. This provides traders with "signals" that are used to drive their strategies."" |

Looking for a little friendly advice. I have approx 1100 shares of PEYAX whichnis trading today at 16.25. It gets a great dividend and the dividend gets reinvested quarterly. I was not planning to sell it at all but I need the money for a down payment on a house. I plan on putting the down payment down by mid may. I would love it if anyone wanted to chime in and let me know if they think I should sell it immeaditly or try to wait a little longer. Since it is a broad mutual fund I essentially want to know if people think the market is going to rise or fall in the next 1.5 months. Thanks form your help. 3/31/2011 5:43:20 PM |

Damn. EWY, the South Korea index etf, is up 12% since the Japan earthquake. I knew that people were moving into that as an earthquake recovery play, but that's got to be due for a correction.

Speaking of ETF's, what service are you guys using to trade ETF's? I want to be able to trade somewhat actively in ETF's, but in a cost effective way. Maybe a couple of trades a week.
The other option for me is to buy Mutual Funds at NAV, but I don't think I would want to do any active trading in that type of format. 4/7/2011 11:19:43 AM |

I use Scottrade, which is $7 in and $7 out
