We got there Saturday night at around 12:05am (well, Sunday morning, technically), but other than a guy (maybe two?) sitting at a table, there was no one there, and the bartender (bartendress?) said they decided to close at midnight that night.
Fortunately, it being the girl's birthday, she agreed to make a shot for the four people of our group that wanted to, but then we had to leave.

Supposedly there were more people there between 10 and 11, and they would've stayed open "if we'd gotten there about an hour ago"...
They need more regulars, it seems. I'm surprised they don't have that many, as they're right down/across the street from a lot of apartment complexes

Its a sports bar mainly, correct? Not too many sports bars stay open past midnight (or whenever the games end) unless its in an area surrounded by other late night establishments. They should try and make their money at lunch, dinner, and during sports events. No reason to stay open late if you're not a late night spot.

^agreed; but they have enough students around them to have decent night service. Obviously, it's not going to get the club/downtown crowd, but it can get the pregamers and just wanna sit at a bar and drink crowd. I know a lot of things they're doing incorrectly, but I don't know why they haven't been more successful with late night service. If they don't turn that around, they might as well change their hours to midnight.

Its in a terrible location. Downtown is 5 minutes away from there and there are 100 infinitely better bars. GSP belongs in garner or fuquay or some shit

Yeah I dont get what changed, you could not even walk through the inside back in Jax heyday.

People that really like to get fucked up like to drink close to the house so its easy to get home.

I've never been there during the day, only at night, but considering the fact that it's full of tables and delicious food and tvs, I'd say sports bar/just chill and drink bar is probably a more accurate statement.
When I said I expected regulars, I meant everyone that lives along Trailwood/Avent Ferry/Gorman that it's really close to to use for that purpose. It's definitely not a go dancing sort of bar. That's why it's called a pub.

You don't have to be a club to have a good late night crowd. But I do think you have to be around other establishments to have more people to draw from. People like to jump around to different places on the weekends. If you're going to be a stand alone bar...you gotta have something going on to draw people and keep people there. Sports bars/pubs...don't usually have that and it definitely seems like this place doesn't.

i celebrated turning 21 at Jax. it was on a random week night. The place was still full though. shots, pints of Magic Hat #9 (it had just entered the NC market at the time) and one fall down the stairs somewhere near the old DMV station/Food Lion on the walk back made for a decent night.

i've said it numerous times ITT, but Jax had the single best buffalo chicken sandwich in Raleigh during it's prime. If I could find one near as good in CLT today i'd be a happier man for it.

sammy's is still there. I don't go by there often anymore (and actually go into Sammy's much less), but it tends to have a decent crowd, for a college sports bar.

I also celebrated my 21st at Jax.

I don't understand how either of these places is open. Who the fuck goes to sammys when ruckus and bada are 2 feet away? I'd honestly rather get a burger from hardees and pick up beer from food lion than spend 45 minutes in GSP watching high school wimmens wrestling.

Gorman Street Pub at least caters to the State fan crowd pretty well during games. At Sammy's State can get relegated to a side TV with no sound because of their allegiances with any of the following fan clubs that have decided to take up residence there at a bar right beside of NC State's campus (Georgia Bulldogs, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Pittsburgh Steelers, West Virginia Mountaineers, and I'm sure several others I'm forgetting). I've never had to listen to a Nebraska fan shouting into a bullhorn while trying to watch a State game at GSP.

We should meet up at GSP instead of Bada or Champions and give them more business then

After passing Sammy's a bit ago, I realized I have been there once (I forgot where it was), after seeing a movie. It was late at night, and they had delicious nachos. That's all I remember though.

A friend of mine supposedly goes there pretty often, she said the drinks are good and because she's now friends with all of the bartenders, she gets things for free. Then again, that doesn't say a whole lot about the quality of the bar...

Only good thing I can add about GSP is that the owner (Bob Guy) is a huge State fan. I went to Jax back in the day, and it always had a warm/welcoming feeling. It was lively and quaint. Unfortunately the GSP didn't give me that vibe the few times I went. It was basically a bunch of construction workers getting their 1-2 post-work beers and a few random people straggling in.

It needs a kick-ass patio, outdoor bar, and a few other things. But I'm not sure any of that will make up for the shitty location. Yes, it is close to a few college apt. complexes, but everyone goes downtown now or to places like the Ale House to watch events.

^ Truth. They need better publicity, too. Even when I've been there with groups of people, "lively" is not a word I would use to describe it.

Went last night, there were... a few people there. They had PBR on draft for $1.50 (Tuesday night special, apparently), there other beers were also super cheap. That might have something to do with why they're losing money... Food was good though. And the people that I was with didn't know about it having filed for bankruptcy, so we're going to go there more often (they live across the street).

There was also a guy who looked really familiar (was it anyone on TWW?) who gave a hilariously inspiring talk on musical progress/talent and explained why his neighbors probably hated him.

TWWers, were any of you there last night?
