I used to work with Helms' niece.

Every now and then we would speak about him and she would go on and on about how he was the sweetest man. In our conversations she definitely shined a different light on the man, me beginning to understand him as his family does. However, one thing I learned is she considered any quote ever made by him either a direct lie or taken severely out of context.

Back in the 90s my mom became disabled and was getting the runaround from the social security office on receiving benefits. Finally she wrote to Jessie Helms office to voice her frustration with the bureaucracy, not really expecting much since he was a huge vocal critic of SSI. Within two weeks she got a letter back personally signed by him saying not to worry, his office would take care of things and in another two weeks she was suddenly approved for SSI.

So while he was a racist scumbag, he did seem to actually listen to his (white) constituents and try to help them out when you reached out to his office. My mom still never voted for him though since he was a racist scumbag
