Spoilers... (and I haven't read the books)

Watched it last night. I was digging it until early in the games when they started man-made fireballs to force Katness into a confrontation. That basically disrupted my view of the plot, and I was less invested in what the movie was selling for a while.

Later when they bated the groups to the Cornucopia with supplies, I thought to myself "now this is how you should bait people into fighting without breaking the momentum", and I started getting back into it again.

...and then they force a final confrontation with giant computerized dogs. Ok, completely lost me again, and I never recover. I guess I was looking forward to the complicated social scenarios that would develop in a "all but one must die" world, but the movie didn't really develop anything of the sort. Almost all of the major conflicts were instigated by the overseers, which for me completely defeats the greatest opportunity here. I told myself I wouldn't go here, but I must: Battle Royal (as a standalone entity) did it much better.

Another big issue I had:
The movie pretty much tied up all the major loose ends of the plot, so much to the point that the minor loose ends (such as the awkward relationship and the riot) just seem like they are unresolved and forgotten. If I hadn't known that it was a series of books, I would have just thought it was poor writing or left to be open ended. At least The Fellowship of the Ring left you with a clear idea of the path ahead of you.

I guess its still a fairly good movie; just not what I was hoping for.

That's my issue with the rest of the series. The first book was a great stand alone with no lose ends. The other two books are entertaining, but do not compare.

I have likened this series to Ender's Game. Of course that's a much better book in the first place. The subsequent Ender's books, Ender's Shadow withstanding, are awful.

What about the poorly developed social aspect during the actual games? Did the book actually develop this, or is it non-existent in the book as well? That's probably the most glaring flaw from a plot perspective IMO. I can understand the direct meddling by the overseers. I just don't like it.

An "all but one must die" scenario creates all sorts of interesting social situations that can organically lead to fighting/killing via simple human nature (see: the girls in the lighthouse in Battle Royale). A lot of the killing in the Hunger Games is artificially instigated from the outside.

During the games some groups form after the initial Cornucopia fight. We don't know how they form, they just do. Katness and Rue's friendship appears to be completely based on "You're a girl in a tree, I'm a girl in a tree, we are now friends".

There just aren't any difficult choices that anyone has to make. There's bad people and the people who don't really want to fight. There wasn't a single "can I trust you?" moment, which is the primary thing that I would expect in a scenario like this.

There was more in the book. Why Katniss paired up with Rue, why Peeta with the Careers. Why Thresh didn't kill Katniss when he had the chance. Dialogues about "we're a team now, and when we are the last two left, we will give each other a head start" kind of thing.

Actually, you did see them begin to pair up during the training session before the Volunteers. Remember katniss encouraged Peeta to throw something around because the group of Careers were looking at him. Also, it is shown that Rue takes an interest in Katniss during those sessions as well.

yah as LK said, I thought they made it pretty obvious why who paired up with who. the careers from distract 1 and 2 paired up, peeta realized he was fucked if he didnt get help, etc.

i was never confused by their decisions in the games even thresh said exactly why what happened happened when he saw katniss.

I didn't like how the mutts were introduced. There was no background to any of the animals except for the trackerjackers (there wasn't even a single conversation about where the mockingjays came from, which is ridiculous to not explain the main symbol of the entire series).

I hated that they didn't do anything psychological to the degree of putting the dead tributes eyes in the dogs. That moment in the book where Katniss realizes it is fantastic, and this time the dogs just pop out of nowhere, as if they aren't even real, and just get to it. Also, Cato is supposed to fight off the beasts with his sword for a good while before he begs for death, so that was just as rushed as the rest of the movie.

I was fine with the start of the games up to Foxface's death. Everything outside the arena was rushed and there was no character exploration. The Gale-Katniss connection wasn't felt at all.

I didn't expect this one to be broken up into multiple movies, and I don't think it would have worked well if it was. It was a short book, and the major action scenes in the plot were relatively short lived in the book. The majority of the little length there was to the book was introspective development by Katniss. That doesn't translate to the big screen, and certainly wouldn't have worked to have been the reason to split this up into two.

saw the movie yesterday afternoon; was very pleased with it. obviously book was better, IMO.

as mentioned already, i was disappointed we didn't see the deceased tributes' eyes put into the muttations. for me that was a key defining moment for Katniss in the book where she realized that the Capitol would go to these horrific lengths for the games, that nothing was off the table when it came to the psychological warfare combined with the physical warfare. and also, we got an explanation of the tracker jackers but what about the mutts? i felt they should've been explained in similar fashion by Caesar and Claudius.

also, for those who read the book, did anyone else envision Seneca Crane as a much older person? like someone in their 50's? i was very surprised to see how young the character was only because i didn't get that vibe from reading.

i pee constantly. hell i pee more frequently than most people even when i'm not pregnant. we got there a little over an hour before the movie started & i peed 4 times before we went in the theater. i purposefully didn't drink a whole lot before so mayyyybe i could only go a couple of times. we sat on the end of a row & i thankfully only had to get up once.

oh and the baby really likes to stomp the shit out of my bladder. it figured this out a little over a week ago & has been doing it a lot since then.

I haven't read the books, and a lot of the "oh if you haven't read the books you probably wouldn't have gotten this or that" crap isn't true... i "got" most of the movie perfectly fine never having read the books.

now one thing bothered me... from my understanding, basically the US has been split into 12 districts... i guess NC being the backwoods hillbilly disctrict ... well from my understanding EVERYBODY in the district was supposed to attend the "reaping day" right? well there might have been a few hundred people there... where is the rest of the population? it can't be THAT small right?

^^There are 13 districts, not 12. Only 12 are still under the rule of the government, because the 13th rebelled and was attacked by the capitol.

The districts vary in size. District 12 is small enough that they can all come on reaping day. Other Districts that are larger, it's discussed in the books, have a pre-reaping day where the name is actually chosen, and then a portion of the District comes for the reaping, making sure that person whose name was drawn actually comes. But all the Districts are fenced in, so there's no way to expand. The Districts are also spaced out enough that there's no chance of overlap, etc. It took a train ride of 1 day to reach District 11 from District 12. So, it covers a large area, but the actual area of population is small.

Oh, and I meant to add, you aren't supposed to know a lot about Panem, or how the districts are set up in the first book/movie. Katniss doesn't know anything about the other districts, with the exception of their exports, and details she learned along the way during the games (i.e. which district bread comes from). She learns more about the Districts after her tour of Panem in the 2nd book.
