My computer is back! I'll be back on the server very soon.
The previous spawn was made that way so that people would spread out into the rest of the map and still have a structured area to return to, and roads to organize their towns around. I'm not saying it can't be down without a structured spawn, I'd just be worried about the spawn getting super cluttered. However, I do think a free-form survival spawn will be way more fun.
There should definitely be a collaborative, non-planned building of safe areas at the spawn, more like an actual town. We had it set up like a city-state before. You could spawn there, but fuck if you're going to build there. 9/11/2011 1:32:04 PM |

Something that might work would be a simple tower or something every 500 or so blocks in a grid - it would provide scattered safe havens for explorers stuck out at night, and would also provide reference points and regions to build around and grow near, but wouldn't be as intrusive as a huge capitol of sorts.
Should we pick out a particular map seed or mod or anything, or just take what vanilla gives us? And do we want to run it on easy, normal, or hard? 9/11/2011 1:48:18 PM |

I don't want this server to have any pre-planning. If you get to night while out exploring, you better have enough essentials on you to build a quick hut (or get lucky and find some abandoned house)
There's only one rule I'm going to stick to, and that is no generated blocks. Even for admins/mods, every single block in this world will be mined.
There will be P2P trading, but no server store.
There will be a server map, but I may not turn it on until people actually find each other on the server (thoughts?)
I'm fine with a cluttered, huge spawn/capitol. I'm pretty sure with 1.8, there is no "single spawn" for the server, that each player has their own spawn points. 9/11/2011 1:59:55 PM |

My experience with spawns on 1.8 has been horrific. First, I spawned 20 ft underwater. It did this several times and I died at least once because I couldn't believe the game was actually spawning me there.
So I get past that and I start building a bunch of neat shit in the coolest set of island mountain ranges I've ever seen... and die. No big deal, right? Except I spawn in a complete different location. As in I spend 20 minutes trying to find that huge mountain range and it's nowhere in sight. I kill myself a dozen times, but the game decides to keep spawning me in the new location.
To give you an idea of how far it was: I later connected the dots using an in-game map. One spawn was in the center of the map. The other was on a corner. That's about 32 chunks away.

I would like to be able to atleast spawn in the same quadrant of the map as other folks, because otherwise there'd be no way of ever finding each other to work together?
I do like the idea of survival towers gridded out to provide shelter as well as reference points. Can they be systematically numbered with a sign over the door so we know which one we're referencing when trying to find each other?
I'm cool with the "mine it to use it" concept for the server if it is going to be an adventure map.

^ If you're thinking about buying it but are on the fence you can try minecraft classic at http://www.minecraft.net It doesnt really capture the feel of beta but its better than nothing i suppose. There are also a ton of youtube videos of people playing.

Euro: I played with a vanilla server. Its just too damn unstable. Too many serious bugs and without bukkit management, I permanently hosed several maps within a couple if hours just playing by myself.

I've been playing single player on 1.8.1 for a while. I played with world seeds and kept creating worlds until I hit one with a town near the spawn point.
Started playing for a while, decided to explore before I really got established/supplied. I made it to a mountain range, kept exploring, then headed "back" to what I thought was my town... actually it was another town. I spent quite some time trying to backpeddle and return to my orginal camp. I wandered a few minutes in another direction and stumbled upon a THIRD town, but this one was different-- instead of small huts and gardens, this one had a tower and some bigger buildings.
